Just wondering if diabetes affects your skin. Noticing very dry skin on my face and arms lately. Spots becoming a problem too. Creams & moisturisers don't seem to help either

Hi, I suffer from dry skin mainly on my hands during winter, hand cream usually sorts it out.

I have a feeling it does, never been a spotty person even in teens but have had terrible spots on my back and chest for over a year now (diagnosed 2 years ago) my mum has said that if the spots are bad you can go to the doctor for antibiotics, if it is diabete s related I assume the best way to get it cleared up is good control! (Dry skin could be to do with poor circulation?)

I wouldn't normally mention this but you started the thread, not me.

My right foot breaks out in minor spots and sometimes things that look like insect bites. Then they heal by going pink and turning into flaky dry skin.

What I can't easily explain is why my left foot doesn't have the same problem. I moisturise both but only the right one has a problem

Just have persistent dry skin on my cheeks and recurring spots on my chin which don't seem to improve no matter what spot cream or moisturiser I use.

I've been diabetic since July 2013, am 21 and never suffered with bad skin even through my teens yet for the past four months, I have had the same problem in that my face had now erupted in spots and on my chest and back too. I was wondering if it was diabetes related too! I was thinking of going to the doctor as don't want the spots to get worse, so I know what your going through!

I've noticed an annoying amount of small insect-like bites on my arms... this could explain why...

Yes. You'll see a previous post of mine where I've detailed skin problems. Has been really getting me down but the antibiotic gel I've had works a bit on my face (doesn't shift my back or chest spots though). Been on long term antibiotics but they screwed up my system and I had a few weeks of really badly diabetes problems because of them (stomach pains with high sugars that would not come down and ketones) so had to stop. My GP did refer my to a skin specialist last year and the only treatment left is roccutaine but I've held off because of the bad stories you hear about this drug. Go to your GP in the first instance is my advice - see if they can give you something to treat it early. I'd left it a good year before I went.

Already been the doctors over the spots. Gave me duac spot cream which does work in getting rid of them from my face but they return as soon as they disappear.

I find that I am breaking out with acne (haven't had any since I was a teenager) which I am putting down to the insulin - fiddling around with hormones never did any good for the skin. I am guessing that once I get my insulin levels right the acne will subside

I have been diabetic for 10 years but for the last couple have had problems with spots erupting on my face - finally went to doctor and was diagnosed with rosacea- a common complication with diabetics- had some antibiotic cream which didn't initially do any good so had oral antibiotics for a few weeks which cleared it and now if I have an outbreak I use cream again - is better if bs control is good

having suffered from extremely dry flaky skin for about two years now & having diabetes then diagnosed hypothyroid with all the thyroid symptoms rearing there ugly head--after much research the diabetic / hypothyroid endo link--gives the skin all sorts of problems, i would have your thyroid checked out for sure by a good endo, who is into natural desiccated hormone, T3 & iodine deficiency with nutritional supplements as a complete treatment plan, further -everything we can see on the outside of our bodies--just reflects the difficulties going on inside

Ooooh I didn't know that Rosacea was peculiar to diabetes. I take L-lysine (amino acid) to counteract that (when I feel it's necessary) I think I might take it more often.

I have been eating a very low carb diet for nearly two weeks and the spots on my chest have all dried up! Improved control? Less insulin? Eating better food? Probably a combination of all. Drinking plenty of water sounds obvious but something that I think many of us forget to do

Yes I already have a bad thyroid, but all I'm taking for that is levothyroxine

may i suggest that all posters with the similar symptoms--get the thyroid checked and certainly check out thyroid sites as dry skin flaky skin acne around mouth area spots etc.. point to thyroid issues--even diabetes itself.. many good docs on you tube explain in detail, some from usa and some britain.

Ohhh, as it happens, I've got an aptn in the morning with my Doc for just such a thing!
