Hi,

Im an A level student with type one diabetes, and for my Design and technology project i was thinking of designing a product to help and make people lives with type 1 diabetes easier. To do this i need to identify a specify problem that i can cater my design to, to help solve it. Obviously i have my own experiences to go off, but it would make my design brief a lot stronger if other type 1 diabetics could share their experiences and problems that they faced, or are facing at the moment. I would be very grateful for any feedback.

There has been a lot of stuff on this recently.. Most research on T1's has concluded the pancreas is the main issue..
I fancy you may have your work cut out...! ;)

I think night time hypos are a total pain .... Sometimes I wake up low and disorientated .. Then struggle to find the light switch and then often struggle to do a test
Maybe there is something you could design that would help with this perhaps some kind of bedside tool that would light up easily and house the machine and even a snack or something ...

Definitely something that would involve less finger pricking and manual blood testing. But yes a new pancreas would be fab and top of the list. Maybe an ingenious little device that you just slipped over your finger to test bloods when hypo so not so fiddly with those little test strips?

well put, and totally agree with this, especially as being a lgv driver, i have to do blood test ever 2 hours. so something that reduces pricking gets my vote

How about some sort of subtle bag for all the **** we have to carry with us? Shoulder holster style or some other similar thing that could be discreet and practical. Would need to have different compartments for insulin (In a frio bag) and so on?

Or a mobile sharps bin? Not in Atomic Yellow...

Or some form of diabetic ID that is not horrible looking and is understated when it is not needed but very obvious when it is?

Or as mentioned above a process to allow blood testing and insulin pens to communicate directly to the cloud with blood glucose levels and insulin doses so that you can have a mobile application that can suggest insulin doses for any amount of carbs that you input? We have all this unused data sitting on our blood testing monitors and that's crazy; I am not going to input data on each 'diabetic event' manually; it needs to be automated.

the accu-chek combo meter tells you how much insulin you need :)

Hi,

I know; I have an Freestyle InsulinX one that does too; but I have to input carbs and insulin; what would be good if all the devices could talk to each other; how many times have you forgotten how much or even if you've taken insulin? I'd like a really smart insulin pen connected to a blood sugar monitor that was connected to analytic software.

But I'd accept a handy bag to carry stuff in!

I'm not on a pump ( so don't know the in's and out of a pumps workings), sometimes the little grey cells don't work properly and a device that could detect, how much you have taken ( if any? ) would be very helpful, especially as one gets older;)

Thanks NicolaAnne, a pump was mentioned a while back by diabetes specialist,, but I wanted to get my BS sorted myself ( was feeling ill for many months, with undiagnosed Coeliac disease which caused havoc with my BS) I'm not sure about all the fiddling about and my eyesight is deteriorating as well.:( But still going strong, onwards and upwards:D

I used to have terrible trouble with them for years which often involved me being revived either by my wife or paramedics. I still do get these issues because of hypo unawareness at night but not to the same degree after I did the DAFNE course.

My main problem is the amount of activity I do particularly cycling. I am doing about 150 miles a week minimum at the moment (commuting and training for the Ride London 100 mile event in August.) This means that if I ride in the evening I get delays in BS dropping so have to be very careful about what I eat and will try never to be lower than 7 when I go to bed. It is a constant threat to me and has caused some horrible issues over the years for me.

I would imagine we have all had problems with night hypo's at some point.

I found to my benefit that changing the timing of the basal injection helped a lot, that together with the advice that was given on the DAFNE course as Auckland Canary found out.
