Hi everyone
I'm new to this site so keep with me :)
I'm a type 1 diabetic & 26years old.
I'm just wondering if anyone out there uses the low GI diet? I'm after some low carb high protein breakfast ideas and apart from eggs (which I don't have time to cook in the mornings) I'm not sure what else I could have?

Hate being diagnosed with T2!
Smoked Salmon with maybe some red onion and capers? Mushrooms always good. Like the ham and celery ice (may steal that one!) but also other lean cooked meats-beef, chicken.. And as for no time for eggs - well - try this...you can lightly poach your eggs the evening before and then slide them into iced water in the fridge. In the morning, sit them in some boiling water for a minute and you're done! Good luck.

Natural Greek Yoghurt/Fromage Frais and a handful of Berries, but you can eat anything you want for breakfast, We're one of the few cultures that has specific foods that we just eat - last nights left overs are just as good

My sugar levels rise as soon as I eat anything in the morning so then by 11am I feel tired and groggy. This is why I'm looking to to lower my carbs. Another problem is, I love my food - and can eat a lot ha

Non-insulin injectable medication (incretin mimetics)
Firstly, do you check your blood sugar as soon as you wake up?,
What medication do you have to take first thing?
What time do you get up?
What time do you have to be in work?
How do you travel to work? Do you drive? Take the bus or train? Do you walk?.
These questions need to be answered, and a plan worked out to ensure you are staying balanced, throught the morning.
A diabetic should have something to eat before they commence the day, so what can you prepare and eat before you leave for work. So if your bs levels rise as soon as you eat, what are you eating? Slow to be converted foods, protein is the best, do you like the danio yoghurts? they are high protein, and quite filling. How about a lightly toasted bagel with some philly cheese on, low fat version, or an unripe/ green going to yellow banana, eaten slowly, bit at a time with a warm drink. Could it be you system goes into overdrive if you are not eating in a balanced way,

So it looks like you are needing to get up earlier, do blood sugar reading have medication, have something to eat, slowly, and they get ready for work, and then check your blood sugar again, then leave for work in plenty of time, as not to need to rush, which will have an effect on bs levels. Take something protein with you, piece of cheese to eat if the slump hits, and then decide to go and see a dietician or diabetic specialist nurse to help set up a eating plan, to get and keep you balanced, let us know how you go, ttfn

I was rising very quickly after eating breakfast.
I now have Greek Yoghurt and some berries and it seems to have sorted things out.

I make an omelette in the time it take me to make a cup of tea. I have mushrooms ready prepped in a bowl in the fridge and so all I have to do in the mornings is throw the eggs in the pan and add the mushrooms. Simples!

nutribullet is good and quick. 3 tablespoons lynnwoods flaxseed with nuts, 2g ceylon cinnamon, 3 handfuls spinach and half and apple. takes a mniute or so.

Oer...spinach with cinnamon and apple? I'd have to be digging the bottom of the barrel, and actually I am not personally far off that when it comes to breakfasts.
Never been an 'as soon as I get up' breakfast type of person.

I am running into difficulties. I am trying to keep to a low protein diet for my kidney so if I had protein for breakfast it makes lunch and dinner more difficult protein wise. I have read so many times how processed meat is a terrible thing health wise and I am sticking with that, so that's pieces of ham out for me. ( It's salty too as is bacon which is bad for my kidney)

Yoghurt? I have bought three pots of the Fage total yoghurt and thrown 75% of them away each time as they lay heavy on me and I don't think my acid likes them. Really missing yoghurt. I was an Activia girl! For some reason, I don't seem to tolerate berries very well. So that's the yoghurt with a handful of berries out!

Fry up? Eggs? Bacon? = a lot of protein for me so early in the day.

I was having a slice of Burgen (buttered) with peanut butter or cream cheese ( still protein but not first class protein I think), every morning but my 2 hr BG has risen slightly over the weeks I have been doing that so I replaced it with Livlife toast which is slightly better. Then I got fed up with that every morning and seriously started to scratch my head. I have decided I really don't like oatbran with nothing sweet in it and I don't like huge rolled oats.

The last week I have been having a Finn crispbread with cottage cheese or just plain buttered with a small pice of cheese or Babybel. Trouble is, it does nothing for my energy levels and I am ready for lunch by 10.30!

Any more ideas?? :)

I don't eat as soon as I get up either.

Could you have maybe a fruit salad or a bowl of cereal? Special K is nice and not too heavy but if like me your sugars rise really quickly after eating then you would have to limit the carbs. Sorry I can't be any more help, I'm having similar difficulties and it's really frustrating!!

Toughie isn't it @Maidz? I used to have a bowl of Quaker oats most mornings about 10.30 with a drizzle of maple syrup :( or sometimes just wait until midday and have something a bit bigger. I realise I should eat within an hour of getting up really now. If I can't think of anything else I am just going to have to up my protein intake during the day. As it is, I like to have a wee bit of protein with a salad for lunch; maybe a roast chicken drumstick, some mackerel or cottage cheese and I usually have some meat or other in my main meal about 5 times a week.

I was struggling with breakfast, but recently started having instant oats ( i get them from the My Protein website, but you can get them from other sites as well). There are 3 or 4 flavours, or unflavoured if you prefer. . I mix it with hemp protein power.

Just mix them in a shaker with water, or milk, no cooking :)
Tastes good, relatively cheap, low GI, natural product, ticks all the boxes for me.
