Clumsy hands

Ok bear with me on this but I just wondered if anyone else gets the same thing and could it be related to my diabetes?
Recently I have had a stiffness appear in my hands so in my finger joints really. Also sometimes I get a flash of pain through both hands. It's making my hands quite clumsy so I keep dropping things.
Does anyone else get this?

Can't say I do, have you been to your Dr's about your symptoms?

Are you T1? It could be arthritis which is more common in T1 diabetics.

In a lot of people arthritis responds well to changes of diet. There are also drugs but these are not so effective.

Anyway I am not a doctor so please don't take that as a diagnosis, just a possibility to check out with your GP. It does not sound like diabetic neuropathy or any other diabetes complication.

Hi Emma I got exactly this to begin with. I was not eating enough. Since adding some fat to my low carb diet it is happening less. Almost never now.

Yes I'm type one and have had it since 1996. I haven't been to the doctors yet. Wanted to see if I wasn't going mad first as my doctor is rubbish and brushes a lot of things off as being diabetic complications but does nothing about them. Will have to bite the bullet and go and see him about this one though I think. Thanks for the replies.

It's his practice but I've booked the appointment but have to wait until the 15th so I'll see how it goes.

With an attitude like that it may be worth finding a Dr that is more willing to work with you when you raise concerns and not brush them off.

It scares me to change doctors as I don't want my test strips reduced any more than they already have been.

As a T1 they should be supplying you with as many as you require to keep in control of things.

It really sounds like your Dr is simply not helping you at all.

I hope you are able to get something worked out, feeling like you are not being given the supplies you need to look after yourself is a very worrying thing.

He is a complete nightmare. I feel like a bit of a burden to be honest. But I've managed to fight him for 100 test strips a month so I'm scared that'll drop down to 50 again if I swap doctors. Just gotta plod on an keep going I guess.

Keep your GP for the time being but get referred to a hospital specialist unit. Your GP will probably cooperate as he will be glad to get you out of his hair. You have a right as a T1 to be treated by a specialist unit

Lousy GP, find someone better!

I used to be butterfingered before I started on thyroid meds. Small or light things just slipped from my hand, very annoying.

High bg gives me cramps in some fingers. I can get finger cramps occasionally anyway if I forget to take magnesium tablets but not as severe as when bg is too high, or above 9.5 or there about.

A 100 strips a month isn't anywhere near enough for a type 1 to effectively manage their bg control Emma. I would change your Dr or look for another practice, no-one should be made to feel like a burden when visiting their gp.

I have just had my B12 checked it is very low. The doc agrees that may be the cause of my hand and foot problems.

I would hate to have a GP like that. I see both the specialist diabetes centre at my local hospital and my GP insists on seeing me also. Bit annoying to have to explain and go through things twice but found its a benefit to have 2 perspectives. You deserve better care. Its wrong that there is such a variance in diabetes care throughout the country.

I have since changed doctor and I am being assessed for carpal tunnel and I had a vitamin D deficiency. All seems to be getting sorted now.

Glad you got it sorted. I was just about to suggest being checked for carpal tunnel. It's really common is diabetics. Really need to go and get myself checked too! Also, did you sort your test strip problem? There was a thing in the news not long ago about this - GP's have been warned about restricting test strips for t1 patients - it stops us from effectively managing the condition and causes more issues for the NHS in the long run!

A 100 strips a month isn't anywhere near enough for a type 1 to effectively manage their bg control Emma. I would change your Dr or look for another practice, no-one should be made to feel like a burden when visiting their gp.

I am T2 and think I was using about 300 strips a month when first diagnosed to find out what meals did to me. You have to do that forever, 100 is way to low..

I have a neuropathy, apparently a complication of being a well-controlled T2 for 33 years! Sometimes my hands/fingers don't work properly. I suffer from dropsy, often especially in the mornings. I do also have osteo-arthritis, which doesn't help the situation.
