Neuropathy question

Some of you who've read my posts will know I suffered really very badly with intense tingling like pins and needles in my feet, legs, hand and arms before diagnosis. The insides of my legs are now totally numb. After diagnosis and eating right and taking Vitamin B and Thiamine that settled down. But this last week or so it's back. Not really intenese like before but the tingling in my feet and hands has started again just very faintly. It doesn't bother me as it's nothing compared to what it was but I'm just worried about any more damage and numbness occurring.

I saw a different doctor the other day as mine was away and I neded to get liver test results (almost back to normal) He said it's unusual for it to go and come back. But reading online I've read many stories of it flaring up again. He said it will never go away and there's nothing they can do and it won't cause me anmore damage and to just live with it. That's not a problem as like I said it's just faint tingling not intense and unbearable like before. I asked again about my numb legs and if I need to see anyone about that. Even to just get a proper diagnosis of nerve damage and he said no.

Has anyone else here had flare ups of their neuropathy. Should I be referred to see somone or is it just something I have to live with. As I sit here now my left foot is faintly tingling. Oh and before the tingling started I had really bad stabbing pains in both legs made worse by lying down. So bad I couldn't sleep and had to stand up. I've had a bit of the stabbing pain again the past few days.

I do think you should at least be referred to a Neurologist for further investigation, looking on the web there are meds that you can take to ease any discomfort and pain.

Can I ask why the vitamin B and Thiamine?
I'm interested in learning more about vitamins and minerals just now.

I don' know tbh. I think it helps the nerves. I never did ask why, when my doctor said I was diabetic and I was talking about the tingling he prescribed them. I think it's to do with enough vitamins getting to the nerves from what I read.

My GP said there is no point referring me as the damage is done and a neurologist cant help.

Commuting, overcrowded spaces, especially after the arrival of covid-19...

 This sounds bordering on negligent! I would definitely ask for a second opinion.

I have had similar symptoms to the poster in my legs and feet - these vary depending on BG levels, hydration, exercise or lack of...I take vit D3, thiamine and magnesium. I used to take vit B12 as well, but my natural levels are adequate, so stopped. My neuropathy is assessed by a neurologist once a year.

That is a shame and I do feel for you, however that's not say that Marie would get the same answer, better to get a referral and get a second opinion from a specialist as they are obviously suffering at this present time.

Jack it has been known for a few years that people with diabetes may be deficient in thiamine
The work at Warwick continues but like all this research takes time and money.

So far the evidence for a benefit from thiamine supplementation is thin.
There have been a couple of trials using Benfotiamine for neuropathy. One was only for three weeks, the second for 6.
This showed a decrease in symptoms particularly pain in patients given Benfotiamine .
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18473286 There are also rat studies that suggest that it may help reduce inflammation.
However, this recent short review ends 'There is no convincing evidence that taking supplements of thiamine or benfotiamine has any beneficial effects in patients with diabetes mellitus'

I was diagnosed a couple of years ago with Neuropathy and calcification of the arteries in my legs. A doppler and a machine showing flow pictures at the Hospital confirmed this.
Put on Gabapentin and told to live with it as there's nothing more they can do :(
