Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Dear All
Sorry I have not posted in a while. I have just had my first test results since starting byetta in November. Hbaic then was 7.8, now it is 6. I have lost a total of 28 lbs since starting byetta, and 10 of those since Christmas. My cholesterol is 4.2, blood pressure 120/75.
I do have a way to go. I was 23 stone two years ago, and had got down to 19stone by my own efforts before starting byetta. I am now 16 stones, and will lose the other 4 stone this year. I have set a target of 1lb per week, which is definitely do-able, and if more comes off its a bonus, and more does often come off.
Everyone tells me I look 10 years younger. I have gone from a dress size 32 to size 20. I can now buy clothes in most high street stores.I am proud of myself, and just want to say that anyone can do it, with the help and encouragement of friends and loved ones. True friends, that is, not the ones who say, ''OOO you will make yourself ill'' disregarding that I was killing myself before!!
I think that without byetta, my weight loss would have stagnated, and certainly, although I was eating sensibly and had been for two years, my Hbaic wasn't being controlled, which it now is.
So, if you are just starting byetta, don't be nervous. It is well worth the initial nausea, and having to inject yourself.
Stay well, and keep smiling
Janet x

Well done Janet - that is fab!!!

I have diverticulitis and haven't found the byetta makes much difference to me.

I started on my 10 mcg dose today, so fingers crossed for tomorrow.

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Vivkaroo/Dennis

Have just logged on to the end of this long standing subject! and was delighted to find someone mentioning ibs. I have lived with this for 40 years now and am finding it extremely difficult coping with diabetes as well. I saw a DSN in November last when I asked to go on Byetta because I had been on Gliclazide with Metformin and since the addition of the Gliclazide I had put a stone on virtually overnight and I already have too much weight. The DSN said that I could not go on the Byetta because of my ibs (I had read that it slowed down the transit time of food and thought that would be great for me!). Instead the DSN put me on Lantus - here I am 4 months later still with all my weight and no improvement in my Hb1AC although my fasting numbers have improved.

Vivkaroo - what have you been told with regards to your ibs and what happened the first time you went on Byetta?

Many thanks. Jude

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Just a quick update...

Good News - 3 weeks in and my weight is now down to 18st 9.6lbs ( Which means that this calendar month it has dropped by 7.4lbs and since Byetta approx 5lbs in just shy of 3 weeks). I have virtually stopped taking Orilstat as well so I know this is the Byetta doing this for me.

Blood sugars are still at 9-11 - but am waiting till I go on the 10 microgram before I see the sugars going down.

Bad news - I have hit the side effects... On Sunday I had the most ferocious tiredness you can imagine - pain all over the body, sickness, diahorrea, the works - virtually all the known side effects in one day.... Having gone to the doctors today - she said that it was going to be the Byetta and to rest, drink water and ride it out...

Any idea for how long I am to ride this out for?!

Phil ( On his sickbed - but not on his deathbed!)

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hi Phillip

Oh dear, yeah remember those sypmtoms well, but not to worry they do pass, mine took about 3 weeeks altogether, but eating as soon as having the injection helps so does not to eat greasy meals and dont over eat either as feelin full and sick is double trouble.

I also found sipping diet coke helped with the wind!! and i also tried to keep myself busy not necessarily doin anything strenuous but just somthing to take my mind off the sickness, such as reading a book or playin a game on comp, just somthing to stop me thinking about feelin sick.

Another is that delay goin onto the 10 until you are feeling better go with ur own body rather than how long u've been on the 5's. You will get the sickness on the 10 but for not as long (well i didn't anyway)

I also found that metformin upset me, and if i took it at same time as byetta whosh double trouble, also try to eat small easy foods as not eating makes the sickness worse.

Sorry i cant be of much help, but its just a case of grin and bare it until it goes and yes it does, even now occasionally usually with my second dose of the day i feel sick and ive been on it since jan and regard myself as an old hand now!!

Hope you feel better soon

Banana's are not good.

The best time to test depends on what you want to know and how tightly you need to control your BG levels.
The usual thing is to test in the morning when you surface as a start to your day. Then I normally test 2hrs after meals.

If I am trying something new in my diet, I test before meal, then at 1, 2, and 3 hr intervals so that I know exactly what effect it has on my BG. Dependent on the result - I can add or subtract that meal from my list.
The level you quoted is higher than the guidelines but timing is all.

Current NICE targets : Fasting BG. No more than 7mmol/l
Before meals. Between 4 - 7 mmol/l
2 Hrs after meals. No more than 8.5 mmol/l

Hope this helps.
Ken :D

Hi Phil,

Your doctor would suspect that the Byetta is to blame simply because nausea is a known side effect, but it is unheard of for someone to go 3 weeks and only then start to suffer the side effects. They always seem to arrive within the first few days. I would guess it is far more likely that you have picked up a sickness bug and are suffering a bout of enteritis. The doc's advice is valid in either case. Hope you get over it soon.

As you are due to switch to the 10mcg dose pretty soon, I would certainly recommend that you ask the doc if you can stay on 5mcg for another month. Whether it is the Byetta or a bug, you will only make things far worse by switching to the higher dose before you are completely over this episode.

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hi Sue,

I have to say your lunch was a bit unbalanced - 2 fruits and both of them quite high in natural sugar. Bananas in particular are second only to dates in having the highest carb content of all the fruits and are given a wide berth by most type 2s. You would be better to have one item of fruit and some protein, perhaps cheese or ham or some nuts. Even a cheese/ham/egg sandwich made with 2 slices of Weightwatchers bread would have been less carbs than that banana.

If you are concerned about the effect this will have had on your blood test, then no need to worry. It was most likely an HBA1C, which measures your blood over the previous 3 months. Whether the level is high or low at the time of the test makes no difference to the results.

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hi Vivkaroo

At last I have found someone who understands my struggles - not many people do especially the medical people. I am like you, ibs rules my life and now with the diabetes my struggle is doubled. I am 56 and have spent many years trying to find my own answers to the ibs. I take immodium daily and also soluble fibre as a supplement. Fruit, vegetables and all good healthy food is bad for my ibs - I fin d that my ibs is much better when I stick to a good carbohydrate base!! At the moment I am feeling particularly low as I just dont seem to feel well at all - I am seeing my practice nurse tomorrow so wil talk to her about my disappointment with the insulin and not being given the Byetta because I was sure the Byetta would slow down my guts - which is what you said. So apart from developing bad sickness after a few months how did the Byetta affect your ibs?? The other ingredient which is really bad for ibs but that diabetics use instead of sugar are sweeteners - they are absolute poison for us ibsers!!

I am also on Metformin but on the slow release so have not had any trouble with it.

I am an ill-health retired medical secretary (back problem!) and spend far too much time on my own at home so am happy to talk on the forums with anyone who wishes to!!

Many thanks for your reply and picking up my post. Jude

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

well i am back from the hospital and pleased to say that all went well.
over the past 6 weeks i have lost 7lb but if you also count the 6lb i put on whilst on holiday and took back off again it mounts to 13lb. :D
So all in all i am rather pleased !!!!!
thank you for the replies on my query re the fruit and the bs level - turns out i should have left it 2 hours to test rather than the 1 but hey ho.
Was told the same as someone suggested to have had the apple and a sandwich - so at least i know now....
i do like bananas though!!!!! :(
back to the hospital in 3 months so carry on the same for the time being.
just wish the appetite suppressant feeling would hurry up and return!!!!

Sue
