Honeymoon period confusion!

Hello peoples....Im completely new to this forum and new to diabetes! My 7 year old was diagnosed as Type 1 last month...spent a week in hospital but doing great with it and he is so brave and amazing...

Anyways, recently he has always had low bg readings...and its gotten to the point where he doesn't seem to need insulin at all! He is on 3 units of Lantus at night and Im reluctant to now give him even 1 unit of his humalog with each meal as it sends him low. It really feels like he isn't diabetic at all! I know this honeymoon period seems to be a common thing but should it feel like he is suddenly cured!

Im not sure what to do really...I guess nothing...just wanted some reassurance that this is normal.

Also on another note Im starting to not trust his bg monitor....it lies! Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks for listening :)

I do not have diabetes
It does actually feel like that during the honeymoon period the amounts of Insulin required are so small. There's no set time for the honeymoon period either it depends on the person but you will notice slowly over time the amounts of insulin required will start to creep up. With regards your meter do you have some testing solution with it so you can check it out? If so this will hopefully set your mind at ease that it is actually working correctly. I have sent one meter back so far because it was reading irratically compared to other meters we have but remember they all have a toloerance on the actual accuracy of the reading if you check the box it should tell you.

People who interrupt you when you're talking and people who won't listen.
From what I remember of my paediatric nursing days (a while back now), it does indeed sound like he's in the honeymoon period and, as you've noticed, the insulin amounts can seem so tiny it feels like there's a mistake with the diagnosis. It's rare (and in my experience, unknown) for people to be wrongly given a diabetes diagnosis, though there is sometimes argument over type, but not usually in children as young as 7. It does indeed sound like the honeymoon period to me, might be worth asking his specialist nurse about the hypos as he may need a change of meds. I've given 7 year olds as low a dose as 0.5u before and it's been enough to keep BG in limits. I'm not suggesting you change doses outside the scope you've been given though, best to check.

Hi, I have experienced the same dilemma as you with my son. He's 10 and was diagnosed in August- he is still on very low amounts of insulin and still considered to be in the honeymoon period. He has 0.5 units of nova rapid with breakfast and lunch 2 at tea time and 3 glargin before bed. It is so frustrating and I too thought he had been mis-diagnosed but apparently this is normal and can last for x amount of weeks/months. As with the monitor I have found that if he doesn't wash his hands properly before testing this can show an incorrect reading- like tonight he had a hypo of 3.0- we treated him then checked 10mins later and it read 8.6- (rather high after 3 dextrose lol)I told him to wash his hands properly and it was actually 4.6. Hope this helps :))

Hi, my daughter was diagnosed 10 months ago she was started on insulin and within 4 weeks needed no insulin what so ever as it caused constant hypos. I really thought they had made a mistake. She took no insulin for 3 months and had normal and sometimes occasionally slightly elevated sugars. She took a cold and within a two weeks needed to start long lasting. She went 4 months with just long lasting and at times had to reduce it to stop hypos. She took a flu in November and within 2 weeks needed to start taking fast acting insulin also. She only needs small amounts for now as she is still producing her own. I dread the next illness it seems to be the trigger to kill of some more beta cells. We had trouble with monitors giving wonky readings In the beginning changed a couple of times before getting one that is consistent. She uses the Aviva accucheck it seems to be accurate every time.

hi. my son was diagnosed last june. hes 6. hes still in his honeymoon period (we think) as hes still on very little insulin at the moment. defo get the meter checked aswell, incase it is a fault. hes on novorapid and levemir insulin , he now gets 2.5 of levemir for the long acting one. his novorapid varies depending on how much carbs hes eating but its around 3 units at the most.
make an appointment with the diabetic nurse and voice your concerns as thats what they are there for.
hope you get it sorted xx
