Hi Alice, I'm new to the site but been T2 for about 3yrs now. I started on tablets but couldn't work with them at all so my GP put me on Levemir & Novorapid... Since being on them my BS readings are much better, I get very few readings above 15 and most have been in the range of 8 - 12 but mainly staying around 10. Over the last month I've been playing around with my injection quantities and I currently injecting about 50 Units a day which is up from around 30 Units ...

Insulin controls high blood sugar but does not cure diabetes. Continue to use insulin even if you feel well. Do not stop using insulin without talking to your doctor. Do not switch to another brand or type of insulin or change the dose of any type of insulin you use without talking to your doctor.

Insulin has the greater ability to lowering the higher blood glucose other than any medicine. Initiation of Insulin treatment is considered in all patients with type2 .

Up until the end of July I was prescribed Metformin 2g daily, Gliclizide 80mg, and Sitagliptin 100mg. I've had real problems with Metformin over the years but my GP would not change it. I was referred to the Diabetes Specialist team in July and started on Novomix 30 flexpens; I was instructed to stop Gliclizide straight away, and at a subsequent appt I told them about the problems I was having with Metformin, and they told me just to stop taking it. Consequently my BG shot up, but I have now managed to get this back to normal with a lchf diet and insulin. I am feeling better than I have in years, and feel more in control of my health. I will probably stop Sitagliptin soon, so being on insulin has had many benefits and also meant that I have been able to stop taking medication that was making me feel even more unwell.

well Insulin tends to make me have a few hypos simply because I exercise a lot ....I have changed my routine today and I have had my breakfast and taken two of my dogs for a two mile walk hoping the levels do not drop before dinner ...then will go to town and get my shopping something I normally do first but oh well am trying this out....then will eat some lunch and take the other two dogs out...fingers crossed it should help...also gradually introduce a low carb diet and nwo on insulin have to look at things that will keep the levels up I guess grrr

As part of our Diabetes Week questions, here's a question for people with type 2 diabetes who have gone onto injections -or are considering going onto injections.

How did (or do) you feel about switching onto injections?

Did/do you have any worries about going onto injections?
If/when you made the switch, how did you adapt to being on injections?
- was it easier or harder than you thought?
- was there any part of it that struck which you hadn't considered before going onto injections?

This question covers injections for insulin or for incretin mimetics like Byetta, Victoza and Bydureon
I'm new to group: but have much to say on topic. Abt 2 yrs ago, I was told I needed to add insulin pen to oral meds regimen. I'd long believed using any insulin would signify complete failure. I played at it for most of the 2 yrs. About 3 months ago, I became serious: neuropathic pain in hands & feet really helped to change my attitude. I am happy to say I am losing weight, complying w/ nutritional suggestions, & exercising ( a serious change for me)! The pain is much decreased!
My current thoughts re insulin: it has greatly contributed to excellent glucose readings. I say that we must each do what we must to survive, nay, to beat this illness! Because I'm no longer expecting merely to survive but to prevail. An accident, followed by bronchitis, nearly derailed me from my new healthy habits, but I'm back headed to where I must be headed. I never dreamt I'd do so, but I take water aerobics 3 plus times weekly & I've begun a walking program. I've been aided greatly by adhering as much as possible to a plant based diet. I've never been so serious about anything in my life. Perhaps It's because It's FINALLY clear to me how very serious this is. It IS my life!

Hello Maureen and welcome to this wonderful forum.
I still call myself a newbie, only been here a few weeks But in the short space of time, I'm learning more about diabetes than I ever have since being diagnosed 14 years ago!
Folks here are so kind and generous with their support

May I ask which insulin injections you're on?
How soon after starting injections did you start to feel better?
Since starting insulin injections have you noticed any change in weight?

I ask the above because I've an appointment with DN this afternoon, discussing changing meds... Maybe going on insulin injections but not sure yet.

Hello, Rose, and thank you for the warm welcome. I hope this reaches you in time for your appt. I am very fortunate as to be taking insulin 'glargine' via a prefilled (insulin) pen. It is almost always painless. I have not had to resort to the use of actual injection via hypodermic needles.
I was truthfully not seriously compliant for an extended period of time after beginning the use of these pens. But once I became adherent to diet, and began even small amounts of exercise, things seemed to change for the better fairly soon. So much so that of course I was immensely grateful, but also left wondering what had taken me so long!? (To fully wake up to reality, as it were.) If you are given the opportunity to use an insulin pen, i can heartily recommend you do so. And, because I am on an almost completely plant based diet, began to move, and am absolutely following instructions, weight began to drop. The diet may be a small challenge but it is so very worth it to have pain disappear and blood glucose numbers improve drastically!
Wish you the best if luck! Hope you can let me know how it has gone.

It's ok, an hour before my appointment the DN phoned to say she's running late with her home visits, could I ring the surgury to cancel today's and re book another appointment for next week!!:shifty: I was so disappointed, I was actually looking forward to changing meds, been feeling really unwell and sugars are all over the place. Anyway fingers cross, appointment is now on Monday afternoon.

I'm so pleased that you're seeing positive results with your insulin regime, you seem to have a good balance...Well Done!

Could you please give me an idea of what you eat that's helped you lose weight whilst on insulin? Thanks

Let me try this again! I've lost this thread 3 times. :( Hoping 3rd time's the charm! :)
There is a program called 21 day kick start. ..online. It's based on a vegan diet & may actually contain menus and recipes for a full 3 weeks. This was originated by a Dr. Neal Barnard, in case you might find this info more easily via his name... (Apparently, it's also on Facebook. I haven't actually seen it myself bc I'm currently taking a break from Fb.) I feel it's only fair to tell you that this was not so difficult for me because I had abandoned red meat years ago. Understand, this has to be strongly wanted, because it is not a typical diet by any one's standards. This is aiming to be completely plant-based! But, still to go 100%, or as close to it as possible, may be a challenge. I've seen videos where actual patients with cardiovascular disease & extreme diabetics were very ill. They followed this plan, &, quite surprisingly, they were almost all able to stop taking all meds!! Please keep in mind that you are worth it.And, for others who need more convincing, it has all but eradicated the physical pain from diabetic neuropathy that was all too present. I relied heavily on breads. I bought special types of breads. Gluten free, and often made with seeds, & old kinds of ingredients. (Pls refer to webite for more info here.) Sometimes the bread's available fresh, as in a whole foods kind of place. In nat'l grocery stores, I find it frozen. whichever you end up purchasing, please recognize that these brands will not last indefinitely because they have no preservatives. if I am lucky enough to find the bread on sale, I try to buy two loaves and freeze one. Sandwiches became a large part of my regimen. This is NOT suggested by clinicians. but I did it because I found the recipes provided too complex and more difficult than I could make so I did what I could to make this work for me. And at this point I should also tell you, I never made it more than one week following the suggested menu ideas. It helps to be able to have a well-equipped kitchen in which to cook. I do not. So I took liberties. I am not the poster child for this program's ideas yet what I have been doing has helped me. I ended up purchasing a lot of fresh spinach. There are smoothie recipes available but I do not have essential equipment yet for replicating the recipes so I ended up putting fresh spinach leaves, hummus, sliced tomatoes, & here comes the big admission: I succumbed after a while to adding sharp cheddar, for example, for protein. We diabetics need protein! Salads are a great option. Again, please go to the website...for more accurate ideas!!
There are great, easy porridge or oatmeal with fresh fruit breakfasts. (Here again, I customized by adding frozen blueberries.)
Truth be told, I need to revisit the info provided and all the menus with recipes. I have both the advantage & disadvantage of cooking (let me be real: im hardly cooking at all! More like, 'preparing' food...) only for myself. if you have a family whose nutritional concerns are of importance, this may provide more challenges.
Before I lose this thread again, & as I've gone on so, let me take my leave & wish you the best with your endeavours.
If I could possibly help you any more, I am here. The only challenge is our time difference. If you're in Great Britain, I believe you are 5 hours ahead of me. If you are elsewhere, I'm not sure. But feel free to contact me. It's an attitude we must nurture to get ourselves right, so to speak, to make our lives, ergo our health, a priority! All the best to you!

Maureen

Rose, I just saw your birthdate info. Happy belated birthday! Hope it was grand!

Thank you! I didn't plan on doing anything to be honest, then some friends and family decided on a get together in the evening, and it turned out to be a really enjoyable birthday, great company and lots of naughty food :hungry:
