i've had type 1 diabetes for just about a year now. I can control it. I'm just having some problems putting up with it at the moment, such as hanging out with friends and social eating etc, i really don't feel like myself anymore

Hi Callum,
I'm sorry to hear you arent feeling like yourself anymore, that's a horrible feeling to have.
Is that you feel a bit self conscious when you're out with your friends about eating/injecting? I dont want to put words in your mouth, just trying to find out what might be making you less inclined to socialise.
Diabetes can take a long time to get used to, especially if you dont know any other of your friends who have it.
Welcome to the forum!! There are hundreds of people on here who have gone through a million different emotions/feelings with their diabetes so dont be scared to ask.

Hi Callum, I have been a type 1 diabetic for 10 years now from 17 to 27 so I went through a very similar experience. It is really annoying to not be able to join in as much as you used to, the biggest changes for me were cutting back on pizza and junk food, and doing the carb counting.

It can feel like you are not the same person, but a person isn't just the sum of what they do, despite what teenagers think. You still like the same things, even if you have to manage your diabetes around them. I have found I can still do everything I enjoy, I still go to parties and I still drink, I just stay off the pizza & soda and don't get so out of it I don't know what is happening.

My diabetic nurse told me when I was diagnosed "You control your diabetes, so it doesn't control you." which at the time I thought was meaningless drivel to make me feel better, but it really is true.

Hope you can keep on top of it all, and keep having fun, otherwise what is the point right?

Hi Callum, I know how you feel mate it's bloody **** at times ! I am 7 months in and it does change things for you in so many ways. It is a lifestyle change but you've got to stay positive and get on with your life. Don't let it control you - you control it. Good advice that I try and stick to as well. Chin up

Hypos, rude people, ignorance and grey days.
Hey Callum,

Well you've found the right place to share your worries !!

I had trouble coping after I was diagnosed and so went to see my Diabetic nurse and doctor who agreed it was depression, so got some medication, did some meditation and got on top of it. Don't be afraid to book an apt with your GP to discuss your concerns, it takes some guts to talk about it but it does help, and it will pass but with help it can get better quickly.

Good luck ;)

Hi,
At the start 40 years ago I had loads of trouble from employers and medico's as well as social.
At least now you are not alone, plenty of help here & other resources.

Dont hate yourself. Its not your fault. You'll adapt, you'll learn. You'll be alright.

i've had type 1 diabetes for just about a year now. I can control it. I'm just having some problems putting up with it at the moment, such as hanging out with friends and social eating etc, i really don't feel like myself anymore
I went through this when I was at school and college.
I used to go out with friends for coffee after school and college it always difficult as there was always that feeling that

I wasn't myself as had to be more conscious of
me,
my friends
the environment
and then the diabetic elephant in the room not wanting to draw attention to me
(hey I could eat now and test and inject later or maybe inject in the loo  so as not to draw attention ).
No one tells you the hardest bit is trying to appear like everything is fine when really it might not be and if it is you might appear like a
hypochondriac or worse a drama queen. Just to let you know it gets easier as you get older.
Maybe think about it like this without Diabetes I'd be too cool ?
So maybe it's good I've got something to put the brakes on me.
Another thing I always thought was if these poor people around me had it they just wouldn't cope like I do :pompous:

I remember being diabetic and fifteen. It is more difficult than not being diabetic. But, all your friends know, and they're still your friends, right? And you're still you. Just think of it as a new, other part of your personality! Yes, it makes you slightly different, but that's a good thing. It means people remember you.

Most of all, don't let your diabetes get in the way of your life. You've said you manage it well, so you are in pole position and it's all in your hands! Everyone goes through a "Why me" phase, and for some it lasts longer than others, but once you are done with that, there's a whole life to be getting on with, so you shouldn't let it get in your way.

Try to think of yourself and the diabetes as seperate i.e. b the guy who has it but try not to let it define u. I got bullied at school as being different. The guy who was the main bully got diabetes when he was 14 and I visited him in hospital at the time I thought it was karma and he admitted that he then knew what it was like to have it I think he was sorry. Anyhow there is u and u have a condition but it doesn't define u.
Hope this makes sense.

Have anyone heard or read about treating diabetes disease with "a new molecular therapy that uses targeted peptides and proteins to restore cellular function"? If you don't know, do a Google search for the term "Peptide treatment", or the company named "Regenerative Cellular Therapy. U can get all information. I hope, this helps you all....
I have concerns about this two reasons:-
1/ Diabetes (T1) may be caused by an auto immune response which turns your immune system on the pancreases Beta cells
2/ There may be a need for immuno suppression as the cells introduced due to the above.
This is of course a theory.
