Been to the dr's this morning and HBa1c levels are 102
From what I have read this is very high...

On an up sode I have had podiatrist and dietician appointments through.
that's the old 12% and you do need to work on it, the dietician will tell you the NHS healthy plate, with 12% you are going to need more than metformin to eat it

I would ask the dr, go low carb and you may get some eye problem with this or meds, so get the retinopathy scan, I'd get it every 3 mths till my BG is normal range and stable

http://www.dietdoctor.com/lchf it’s a long page and a video

For me, the more carbs we eat the more carbs we want. they don’t give up easy.

Just seen this and thought you might like to see it as an example of what is possible.

http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/index.php?threads/Had-a-good-day....67927/#post-686352

Use it as inspiration and as encouragement.

Word of warning though, we are all different, we take different medication , have different other health conditions, may have a different ability for physical, exercise etc So do not put yourself under added pressure by comparing your results with others, particularly if these others are experienced diabetics who have already managed to bring their levels under control.

The only person we need to better is the person we were yesterday.

So the important thing is to start getting to grips with this condition and to start seeing your levels decrease.

You may have to be patient though and be prepared for some backward steps along the way.

All the best

Pavlos

Wow that is positive... that if I make thebright changes that could be me...

Well 2 hours after food was 15.3 having been 12.8 before.

Is this good or bad... Am I corrrect in thinking 2hours after should be a 2mmol increase?

How much in peoples experience do your HbA1 levels drop in 3 months...

Hi, welcome. With diligence and the right diet it is perfectly feasible to get your HbA1c levels down from 100 to (say) somewhere in the 60s or even less in 3 months. You are already learning what different foods do from your meter readings - what you need to do is get your pre-meals down, the rest will follow. As already mentioned, cutting your carbohydrates is key, and don't rely on any medication to do it. With the right diet you can ultimately minimise medication and even come off it altogether.

Good luck and let us know how you get on! (And congratulations on your engagement!).

You are correct about limiting post meal counts to within 2mmol of pre meal counts. The 2,5 you had at lunchtime is not bad but probably indicated that you need to reduced the portion size of whatever element of you meal was high in carbs,

The weetabix for breakfast has not surprisingly spiked you badly. All cereals are both high in carbs and highly soluble digestible, which means a high amount of glucose enters our blood stream very quickly, too much and too quickly for most t2's impaired insulin production/utilization to cope with. Best avoid in the future. Eggs or plain greek yoghurt with some fresh or frozen berries much more advisable in my experience. Some people can cope with porridge as well.

For now concentrate on your post meal counts, as these are the ones you can directly affect. If you get these right first you should also see a gradual fall in before meal counts as well.

Any increase in physical activity such as walking will help as well.

Hi PerryClare

Sorry to hear of your diagnosis, now you, you can learn to manage it. Firstly you have come to the best place, I was onky diagnosed a few weeks ago and there is a wealth of information and advice on here.

As for the Weetabix this is the effect it had on me, others may have a different effect it is all trial and error.

Do you have a blood sugar monitor? And what treatment has the doctor advised so far?

Hi Nightwishing and Clare, I am a fairly new diabetic and have found that I can't have breakfast cereal. I am an "oldie" and have had cereal for breakfast all my life but am weaning myself off it. I tried it with less cereal + my usual fresh fruit and Greek yoghurt instead of milk but it still puts my glucose too high. This morning I had a Spanish omelette (not what I would choose) and my post glucose was only 1.3 above my pre so that will have to be breakfast whether I like it or not!!!! I did try porridge but don't like it and know I won't stick to it. Other tasty, easy to prepare suggestions welcome.

Hi @Perryclare and welcome
You will probably get a much better response to your post if you start your own thread in the Newly Diagnosed part of the forum. @daisy1 will be able to give you lots of useful information then.
Both banana and weetabix are high in carbs so probably not the best diabetic choices.

Hi Perryclare, welcome.

For a low carb breakfast the best options are eggs, cheese (actually you can have a full fry-up if you want - at least the bacon, egg, mushrooms and tomato) or some berry fruits (blueberries, blackberries, raspberries) with full fat Greek yoghurt.

There is a very good book called 'Carbs & Cals' which has loads of photos of foods and meals with carb, calorie, protein and fat values. Basically try and go for foods with less than 10 g carbohydrate (ignore the 'of which sugar' bit) per 100 g. This information is on the food labels on the supermarket shelves.

With veg soup avoid potatoes and other 'below ground' veg in general.

Hope this helps.

This is the link to Daisy's post I referred to earlier. Please study well as it is an introduction to diabetes and contains lots of useful information.

Reading the current thread from beginning to end should also give you useful info.

As for breakfast eggs and bacon, omelette, plain yogurt with berries.

But what you really need is a glucose monitor to start finding out how your levels respond to different food.

Welcome girls. A big shock I know but with all the great advice on here you will soon get your levels down..bread is a no no for many of us but bacon eggs and mushrooms won't raise your bgs and a great way to start your day. Or full fat greek yoghurt. Or cheese and cold meats or hot meats. Many alternatives. Good luck. Ask lots of questions. Xx

For most diabetics bread is a no-no. To reduce carbs, potatoes, bread, pasta and rice are the primary foods to avoid as much as possible (apart from the more obvious sugary stuff of course).

Hello and welcome from me.

I agree with the others.

Firstly, you need your own blood glucose meter. This is an essential tool to help you learn which foods your body can handle without raising your blood sugars too much. Have a look here http://www.homehealth-uk.com/medical/blood_glucose_monitor_testing.htm the test strips are about the cheapest around, and many of us on here use this meter.

Next, you need to sort out a suitable eating plan for yourself. One you can sustain for the rest of your life, not just the next few weeks. Cutting down on carbs is very important. Please ask as many questions as you like.

Hi Perryclare,
Welcome to the forum. I was diagnosed in September, so not that long ago. I have chosen to go on a low carb high fat diet which many of us are on here. It works wonders with get the blood sugars down. So for me I don't eat any bread, rice or pasta, nothing that grows below the ground and in the fruit category only berries.

For breakfast I usually have an omelette which I make in the microwave with two eggs and cheese, plus ham or mushrooms what ever I fancy. For me an omelette bring my morning readings down very quickly.
We will look forward to getting to know you through your journey.
