wireless pumps

Although I told my doctor a week ago I definately wasn't interested when she asked about pumps, I've had a research and. Im interested in trying one of these wireless pumps. The Omnipod looks interesting although I have read a few people say it's unreliable.

I just wondered if anyone knew how likely these are to be funded by the NHS? Do I just need to go and ask my doctor about it?

I switched to Omnipod in the Summer and I absolutely love it, I was on the Medtronic for 5 years and I experienced constant problems. The Omnopod delivers the insulin accurately and to have a tubeless pump is a bonus. I have read lots of negative reports but I think that they relate to the earlier version because I have not had a single problem with mine, I would not hesitate to recommend the Omnipod.

Brilliant, thanks. Is yours NHS funded? I think I'm going to mention it to my doctor, don't want to get too excited yet though as she may well say no. Just fed up of giving injections all the time haha

Although I'm not on the omnipod myself, I know it is definitely NHS funded,as I was offered it over two years ago as one of my options. I use the Accu-Chek Combo, which has the pump and wireless remote. I would recommend everyone to get a pump wireless or not, as it gives you so much more control. No more drop off in long acting insulin before its next due, or trying to juggle a low at one time of ay and a high in another due to a constant long acting insulin rate that cannot vary though the day. ( My pump allow hour by hour changes).

I am awaiting approval for a pump ( dietician appointment number 2 on monday) and my DSN has said omnipod is a choice at my hospital -- not sure if all hospitals offer them though.

my research has put the omnipod in first place as well.

I'm on the Accu-Check Combo, I have also tried an Omnipod when my hospital was looking to decide to add it to its offerings, if I had the choice again today it would be a close call but Omnipod would probably win for me.

I have an Omnipod. Over the years, I have been on Medtronic (twice) and the accucheck.
The Omnipod is by far the better option which gives more freedom. The tubing is a nightmare especially if your a guy. Very few places to attach the pump..The tubing creeps out!! Its a BIG passion killer too (if youre single) - Mind you so is the Omnipod. - Thats the only downside on the Omnipod. You cant just disconnect it for an hour or so.
I got myself the new Freestyle Libre. I found it a bit of a pain to use with the Omnipod so now Im back on MDI.
Ive used all pumps...tried most things. For me the best so far is good old fashioned pens and the libre. I take Tressiba once per day. It is now so easy to carry my Libre in one pocket and a pen in the other, I just scan and take a quick shot whenever and right now, I am having the best BG control that I have ever had.
The Freestyle Libre outweighs any device by far.

PS: Pumps are hard work. Youre constantly fine tuning them. Its not the easy solution that everyone thinks. Even the specialists at hospitals are now saying this.

You do need to spend some effort managing your pump, its different to MDI and it may not suit all.

I would never go back to MDI. :)

Pump funding depends on which health authority you're under... North Hants won't offer the Omnipod :(

I have used the veo for 4 yrs... Switching to the Roche Insight for the remote functionality. Originally went veo for cgm but its poor quality has meant I have never used it after the first go. And the price of the libre is sooooo much lower than Medtronic cgm!

You'll love the insight remote... The whole thing is soooo good!!! It really is a smart piece of kit....

And rumours abound that accuchek may be working on a cgm of some sort.. Well Roche to me are the best for detail to customer needs, so If Roche do bring a CGM out I wld consider that.....

Know some people talk about a closed loop system coming out next year being the equivalent to an external pancreas... But like all technology except Roche's I will be watching their release. Personally for me I cannot see how a mechanical electrical pieces of equipment could ever follow my lifestyle of physical work then less then physical etc closer than I manage it as I know my activitys a day in advance and can plan..just my thoughts on the developments and also my joy with my Insight now. Still having some probs with bleeds from plastic sets but managing that better now too so the Insight has a huge thumbs up from me after 22 days I think using it. (Combo previously).

I saw the closed loop CGM / Pump. Too many wires and gadgets attached to the body.
Ive tried them all. The best new piece of equipment is the freestyle libre. Ive not finger pricked in over 6 weeks and my HBA1c has dropped another 1%
In the 14 years I have had diabetes, I have learned more about my body, food, the time insulin takes to start working, how much insulin I need etc since I have been using the libre. For the first time ever, I now have stable BG and Im not spiking more than 8 post prandial. I would never have got to this level if it wasnt for the libre.
Honestly.... the best kit ever!

Too many gadgets and gimzo's for my liking too with the closed loop.

I also consider that I'm getting older too... Old age terrifies me. Anybody can give an injection.. Even my hubby. But what happens if I get dementia with a closed loop etc.. Or even just a pump? Who the heck can assist me then??? Husband although been to training hasn't got a clue,no family and certainly no community nurses trained.

I think closed loops will not be on my santa wish list.

People who claim they know how I feel.
Been told to test my blood when I'm grumpy.
Constantly been asked "should you be eating that".
I was on the Accu-Chek Combo but upgraded to Accu-CheI Insight 3 weeks ago and love it. Pre-filled cartridges make it hassle free, smaller pump and the touch screen meter is brilliant .

Did you get the Libre via the NHS or is yours self funded?

I was on MDI and wanted CGM as I thought it would offer me better control but was offered a pump instead (Cellnovo), although I am enjoying the ability to tweak for excercise I'm not convinced it's improved my hba1cs yet; but CGM/FGM was not an available option for me at the time as I was told the NHS don't (yet) appreciate the benefits of it.

The only thing different about the closed loop to a conventional pump with infusion set and cgm sensor will be the programming inside the pump to release insulin according to the glucose levels picked up by the cgm sensor so as far as I know, its not all wires and gadgets
