Travel Insurance Cover

Hi, has anyone had any problems with travel insurance?
I've just called Aviva to update my condition from type 2 to type 1 and they have declined to cover me for this. I'm assuming this is because I ended up in hospital twice with DKA. The first admission occurred as a result of being misdiagnosed for 7 years and therefore didn't know my BG was so high until I ended up seriously ill. The second admission was only a day after being discharged due to not being prescribed enough insulin, both times no fault on my part. I tried to explain this to the Advisor and explained that my condition is now very well controlled, however as there was no option to enter this into the system, she could only update my initial diagnosis.

I'm feeling really frustrated about this and was wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience, and if anyone could recommend an insurer that will cover type1?

I've always took my insurance out with the travel agent I book my holiday with, I've always declared my diabetes but never been refused insurance, but then I've never been admitted to hospital with DKA, so I do wonder if this is a deciding factor even though you have explained the circumstances to them.

You could try one of the price comparison sites for travel insurance, failing that try one of the specialist insurers who deal in people with medical conditions, good luck.

I use Direct Travel (I go for their premium policy), you can complete the medical screening online. I had to claim with them when I was on holiday in the US a couple of years ago, I can't fault them at all. I'm not sure though if you have a hospital inpatient stay within the last 12 months if this does affect things.

Thanks for your help. Mine is through my bank too, I asked if I could pay an additional premium but was told they don't do this. I think it is that I was admitted to hospital, but I'm wondering if they would refuse someone who presented with DKA without being previously misdiagnosed with type2?

Hello.
We got insurance for me in September after I was diagnosed in June. Through our bank too. They did ask if I'd been to hospital as it was more than 2 months they didn't mind. Maybe it's just too recent?

I would try other insurance companies. They all ask different questions and you may be able to find one you can be honest with that doesn't go into a panic. Usually hospital admissions or other treatment cause exlusions, say, for 6 months or a year. Insulin /Type 1 is not seen as a problem by most companies assuming no bad history.

The comparison sites are no good do not take into account your illness. I used to go with Churchill but was refused for some reason last time. I have an advantage gold account with natwest which should be free travel insurance but because of my type 1 is extra £75 for the year. Won't cover my pump if lost/stolen.

Hi Walshdon,

My account is with Barclays and never had any problems previously. I wouldn't mind paying the extra but there wasn't even an option. I have found a medical comparison site ( see my previous post for link ) and this seems really reasonable. Maybe worth taking a look to see if someone can cover your pump.
