I was just at the endo yesterday for the 3-month check and it was 6.6, no change from the last time which really surprised me as I'd been having a lot of problems. I've been put on Synthroid which has really been doing a number on the bg readings and consequently using more insulin than I like. And coincidently it looks like the last of the beta cells are crapping out according to the c-peptide test I requested. So that leaves me little choice but to up the insulins but I must say i'm very apprehensive about this . I feel I'm failing somehow in that I can't keep the bg levels at a good level and having to resort to insulin to do so. I just don't know how much to use without doing more harm to myself. And I'm still new at this game and unsure of how to procede.

hi carol,
i don't think of insulin as a resort, but an excellent wonder drug that can help you acheive really good results (and as a type 1, i have no choice). maybe try not to think that if your insulin requirements increase that it makes you bad or a failure! you need the amount you need to maintain good health and that's that. :) everyone has different requirements.
what is your worry about more insulin harming you? let us know and maybe we can help.

interesting reading everyones different posts.

My last one was 8.2 which was an improvement on the 8.7 the time before.

I have been as low as 7.2 and the team keep using this result as why can you not get as low as that again.....the answer...I kept falling over, this was the result when I first switched to Humalog and lantus, and lost all hypo awareness. Had some very bad scares, with ambulance being called on one occassion. This was 5 years ago and awareness as now returned.

Any way they have finally convinced me to switch to the pump as the fear of hypo now, is the limiting factor, for both myself and my poor wife who has had to sort out the probs in the past.

Had the first meeting yesterday, which lead me to discover the diabetic internet world...never really bothered in the past...but I need to address issues in my life. So pump on order...told it would probably be the new accu check combo as it should be avail in about a month. fingers crossed!

Have a good look around this forum, especially the dietary advice available here. One of the plans should proabably suit you and help get those numbers down to a more acceptable level.

Low carbs, no carbs, high carbs, low GI/GL, Vegan, Vegetarian whatever. There might also be something about a Paleo diet as well, whatever that might be ?

My latest HbA1c was 6.7%. Not bad - but not great. Thing is, I know that this is not a good indication of my overall control. My sugar is usually high when I measure it (often 6+ pre-meal, and 9+ post meal, often going into double figures) so I know that it's the drug Gliclazide that is bringing my BG down.

This can't be good - Gliclazide is a temporary fix, as it tends to burn out the Beta cells that a Type 2 has remaining.

Roll on the Byetta!

I'm posting because I'm _so_ relieved about my last HbA1C, which was 5.9. When they did it in mid July on diagnosis it was 14 (yuck), then about a month and a half later, it was 9, which was better but not great (though probably included a lot of BS of 20+), so I'm really pleased it's come down. This is the first reading which has given me an indication of what my control could and should be like. I don't know whether this is 'honeymooning', but at least it's given me the sense that I can do something about Diabetes. Being online here has been so helpful in so many ways - both practical and psychological - the more support we have, the better. I want to wish everyone the best in managing their diabetes, and a positive attitude in living with it. Even if that involves the occasional treat.

mine was 17.7 at diagnosis and 5.9 3 months later, though I did work at it like crazy.

Still waiting for a place on a DAFNE course though pretty much already doing it. I still eat what I want though not always when I want... 4 or 5 sticks a day is enough thank you.
What I have learned is that there is an awful lot of maths and prior planning in being a T1 though I think we sometimes have it easier than T2's.

Just for ref I have found that to work out an approx A1C (+-20%) take your last 6 weeks average (being brutally honest) then go: (Avg+5.7)/2 which seems to give a good approximation.

AndyS - hope you get on the DAFNE course asap, and great news about the Hb1AC reading - it sure feels good.

Howie - Good reading, too. I can just see a load of type ones around a table with sugar free cookies and milk playing HB1AC SNAP!

I was diagnosed as Type 2, three years ago. I have been on Insulin, Metformin, then Gliclazide and now on 62 units of Novomix 30 daily (increasing the dose every three days) plus Gliclazide tablets. So far, all have failed to bring my HbA1c down and it is climbing steadily and now at 10.8% (SEE BELOW).

UPDATE 5th December 2010: As you will see in my signature below (which updates on all posts automatically), things have changed pretty fast! 516 units of insulin now, is a lot more than 62 units. I was so concerned that I visited my GP a few days ago & he has put me on Orlistat (Xenical) capsules. These capsules stop about 30% of ingested fat from being absorbed & instead, the fat is ejected anally. The result is bright orange liquid fat being projected all over the toilet bowl by lots of flatulence! The leaflet with the capsules warns of flatulence & incontinence being very common side-effects. I shall, for the first time since I was a baby, have to wear "protection", in the form of panty-liners; and YES, I AM a MAN! The capsules are designed to encourage weight loss & they are certainly encouraging me to further reduce the little amounts of fat that I eat; so as to avoid the unpleasant consequences.

My GP warned me of the side-effects & he also said that a REALLY GOOD aspect of the Orlistat capsules, is that they reduce the Blood Glucose of diabetes patients. By heck, he was right! I'm in my 5th day of taking this medicine & have reduced my insulin today, from 516 units to 440 units; even after doing this, my BG before meals is in the 4.5 to 5.0 range. It was 9.0 to 13.0 five days ago! :D :D

Iwas was diagnosed just over a year ago and have gone from

6 - 6 - 6.2 - 6.4 - 6.6 as of yesterday... not low carbing and haven't really changed my diet or life at all.

The doctor seems pretty pleased witht he results... I'm a bit worried it is on a upward trend, but hope to keep in the low 6s from this point onwards.

I have done DAFNE, but I was using the principles before I had done the course.

Hi James,

No doubt your knowledge and experience from being on the DAFNE course will help you achieve the low 6's.

Last hba1c was 6.3, I might have been a little lower but had recently changed my basal insulin from lantus to levemir and it took me weeks to get the split dose correct.

My last HbA1c was 5.2, up from 5.1 and they are the result of being very strict with myself - apart from allowing myself treats outside the 8-12 weeks the test takes into account 8) . I have a test every 3 months or so, so it does make me behave myself most of the time. :)

Since being prescribed Victoza, I have consistantly dropped and now reached 6.1 with my endo telling me he does not want to see me go any lower than 5.5
How I level off at 5.5 I've no idea, but I'll cross that bridge if and when I reach it
