Hello all,
It's been a long time since I've been here (hangs head in shame).
A little background info.... I was diagnosed in November 2013. I was diet controlled until recently. After I was diagnosed I did a ton of research, I joined this forum and gained some fantastic advice. I spent weeks putting a plan in to place that worked around my family and then went on a low carb diet for around 9 months. It worked fantastically well for me, my blood sugars dropping to consistently normal levels. All in all I felt fantastic. Roll on summer and BBQ's, gatherings and holidays. I figured relaxing a little bit on my diet wouldn't do any harm.....big mistake. Within a couple of weeks I'd completely gone back to my old eating habits and have been struggling ever since.
Roll on to now, my blood sugars have been high enough to warrant a prescription for Metformin. I'd completely stopped testing my blood sugars for months and generally ignored the fact that I'm diabetic. This morning I took my first dose of metformin, 1 500mg tablet. I also did my first blood sugar test in months. First thing this morning I was at 15.4, after some breakfast 12.5, before lunch 9 and after 10. Whilst preparing dinner not long ago (we normally don't eat until 7-8) I started feeling really odd. Cold sweats, shaky trembling hands, feeling jittery like my heart was racing and feeling like I needed to eat something right away. I tested my BS and it was 5.4. This is probably the lowest it's been for quite some time. Why did I feel like this? Could the metformin have really had such an effect so fast?
The funny thing is that this isn't a new experience for me, it's happened on multiple occasions before. Even during the 9 months where my blood sugar was at normal levels this would happen occasionally. And on those occasions where I tested my blood sugar it was always around 4.5 - 5.5. I know some people are prone to being jittery if they haven't eaten for a while but I often noted that these episodes were unrelated to how long ago I had eaten.
Any advice would be much appreciated!
Laura
