I too suffer this problem my GP told me it was due to the metformin. When I asked why he didn't warn me when I was first prescribed it he said wll youprobably would have refused to take it - and he was probably right!
I too have had some embarrassing moments but mostly the family all respond before I do 'We know its the tablets'.

Cosy, I know it's a serious subjects but the posts above have caused me to giggle today, so thanks for that.

As detailed above, Metformin and most other medication often causes "difficult" moments - my colleague who is actually a lot me sensitive to Metformin than I am, invented the phrase "Sharting" as a bad day does cause a dramatic combination of loose stools and wind. The only way I know to resolve it is be careful when you take your medication; never on an empty stomach or a light snack. Ease off on the citric acids eg grapefruit etc. I found that helped. On a really bad day, I find some of the over the counter anti-diarrhoea medications help relieve the symptons along with planned excursions to the loo - usually a quiet corner of the building away from others !!!!

Take care, thanks for the laugh and remember, you are not alone in this. It is good that you can at least have a laugh with fellow sufferers as it always makes me feel better knowing I am not alone with the somewhat more peculiar aspects of this condition.

Thank you all for your replies and funnys ! I think it has ran its course now at least I know it is probably the Metaformin that is causing it has actually calmed down a bit probably depends on what I eat. My blood sugars are coming down slowly but surely as is my blood pressure so diet and excersise seem to be working.

Take care all of you.

Hi Cosy, On a serious note about your problem, you could ask your doctor to switch you from the dreaded metformin and onto Glucophage SR. This is a slow-release version of metformin and is much more gentle on the stomach. It can still cause flatulence but nowhere near as bad as metformin. GPs are often reluctant to prescribe it unless specifically asked as the cost is a lot higher than metformin.

Hello Cosy

I too have suffered from an excess of fartytitis as I call it, but I'm not on Metformin so can't put it down to that. I take a few natural remedies for menopausal symptoms so don't know if it's one of those that's causing it. I keep denying it's me to my husband as you all know that girls don't fart!

Excess wind isnt always due to medication, some foods, for example dairy produce (lactose) cabbage, broccoli, onions, etc, stress, hurried eating, not chewing food properly, swallowing air, anxiety, etc can cause this too.

I am not sure about taking charcoal, this is meant to absorb toxins in the body and yes it does help with wind, but I wonder if charcoal would absorb medication as toxins and so render meds ineffective?

Peppermint capsules, aniseed, fennel herbal teas, pro-biotics (esp kefir) worked well for me when I was badly afflicted with this embarrassing condition.

Oh and some tried and tested tips:

if you are out with a male, just fart to your hearts content, people will always think its the man whose done it.

If you are sitting on a sofa/settee just press yourself right into it, the offending odour will travel along the springs/upholstery and surface around someone else further down the sofa.

If the worst happens, say you drop one in a crowd just turn quickly to the person next to you and say really loud 'dont worry, I will say it was me' and smile all innocent.

In supermarkets just walk around the cheese section, then walk away fast.

I checked out the website someone kindly posted in here, hmmm not so sure about these inserts that you would wear inside your pants, surely they have to be placed closely to the strategic spot, and unfortunately pants have a tendency to sag, so I dont think that I would feel very comfortable running around with them, besides they dont come with a silencer....room for improvement there me thinks, so girls I think going out with a male is a better option, and guys, well you are ok, we know you tend to combust all the time anyway.

Moderators or admin will probably terminate my membership now... so I better shut up.

i had serious trub with Metformin too but i now drink smoothes made with kefir and flavoured with what ever I fancy. kefir is good for IBS among other things so that may be the reason I found it good.
I dont take Metformin or glucophage at all now.
just look up kefir and read about it?
hope this proves helpful

Thank god I am not the only one with this problem!

I can say from my own experience that I think it is just the diabetes causing flatulence! I have never "farted" so much in my life as I have since I was diagnosed! I was initially on metformin and thought it was that but avoid rosiglitazone if you can as it increased by 300%!!! Since following diet only the problem has decreased a little but I still "pass wind" more than I ever did before my diagnosis!

On the funnier side - I just stand/sit and say "OOhhh excuse me!!" and hope my cheekiness and directness will let me get away with it - it works with family and friends, but I have had days where I have sat in a class, or in a meeting almost doubled up with the pain of holding it all in!

When I was first diagnosed 33 years ago, an elderly woman at a Diabetes UK meeting asked a consultant in open forum about what she should do about wind down her back passage and he told her to shut the door!
Seriously though, he told her to cut down on the so called specialist diabetic foods as they contained sorbitol as the sweetener and this causes terrible wind. Don't eat too much diabetic chocolate etc.

Sugarless Sue,
"An old fashioned remedy was to eat charcoal biscuits.I don't know if they still exist or even how much carbs would be in them."

Only problem with that is if the Fart caught alight, you could burn like a fireplace for days !
