I had Trigeminal Neuralgia three years ago before i was told i had Diabetes, for the people who don't know about this its very painful it affects three nerves from the brain to above the eye and to top and bottom of the jaw when it starts it feels like terrible tooth ache all the time some people have been known to do away with themselves when it attacks. My doctor after having dental work and having teeth pulled out sent me to see a doc up the hospital and they finally told me it was T.Neuralgia i was put on Amitriptyline as this works on the nerves and no more pain, but last week it came back so i took a higher amount of the Amitriptyline but no good.I was wondering if Diabetes can make this worse? and does any one else suffer with it? and what do you take for it? shan x

Hi Shan

I don't have your condition. I have severe Rhinitius and Sinusitis and have some damage in the ocular area. I was put on Allegron (Nortriptelyne) and it worked like a magic wand  along with Levocetirizine..

I still occasionally have attacks (up to 8 hours) and I increase Allegron by 10mg as soon as I feel an attack and take 2 x 30/500 (not the normal 8/500) Co-Codamol (can't take Ibuprofen etc as I am Warfarinsed) eventually, after 2 doses of the Co-Codamol I am getting some relief. I really can spot the signs now (always at night time ) and take immediate action because it is unbearable...

I have not noticed any different since I was diagnosed with Diabetes but caffeine (lots) and alcohol really set my nerves off in that area at times...

Rude people! Not being able to do the things I want to do.
Tegritol is another drug used for TN. It is actually an anti epileptic drug but very effective on TN.

I seem to remember that poor teeth alignment can also be a contributing factor in TN.Ask your doc.or dentist if this is possible.

I had an 18 month chest infection, saw no end of specialists, the end result was that the 'drip' was CAUSING the infection hence being given Allegron, Levo and I use the Flixonase Drops not the spray, they are much much better, trickier to use but the end result was after a few days the drip stopped (and the sniffing :D ) and the chest infection went 2-3 days after that. I barely even need asthma inhaler now they have stopped the drip.

I feel so much better since this treatment regime...

Maybe worth asking your Doc for a referral to a Nose specialist???

Take care

I'm not sure if poor teeth alignment is a contributing factor in TN, but I agree that it can affect and cause intense pain in the entire face, that includes the teeth and jaw. I really feel bad to those who are undergoing this kind of problem. I know that this can be treated and you can consult your doctor about it. There are medications and also surgical options, however it also depends on the severity of TN since it can be unresponsive to treatments.

Thank you all for your reply's,i'm on amitriptyline 50mg now, before it flared up again i was only on 25mg and on this i was pain free for three years,i'm off to the doctors later and i'm hoping he will give me some thing to work with the amitriptyline.I know my teeth are ok as my dentist was the one years ago that said it could be Neuralgia after loads of visits to him when it first started, but i will ask about the Tegretol, wish me luck, shan x
