Hi, I need help (in more ways then one!). Started a healthy eating plan four weeks ago and haven't lost a single pound (only the ones in my purse). I desperately need to loose a stone, dont know where I'm going wrong. I've cut down on high fat and sugary foods and my bs are much better. I think maybe I should stick to my old way of living. Are there any t1 diabetics out there struggling to loose weight like me? Any help and suggestions greatly needed. :(

I am a normal weight, about 10 3/4 stone and about 5'8 but I have noticed I have put on about half a stone or so and I cant really shift it. I eat salads daily.. but I am to unmotivated by this weather to go to the gym... bring on the summer when the sun helps me get out of bed!
But I agree if it is quite a big issue exercise is the route you need to take!

Daily exercise goes hand in hand with the diet. Its still not shifting the weight and the trousers are getting tighter!

Hi Sugar Pie,

I can sympathise, since I had to lose a few some time back. I shifted 4 stones in the end, and they haven't come back since.

It's nothing to do with high fat foods, it's an urban myth that one. It all comes down to the levels of insulin you're using. It's often referred to as the fat building hormone, not only because it'll convert any extra blood sugar to fat, but it turns off glucagon production too, so it makes it supremely difficult to burn fat. No amount of treadmill-time will do it if insulin levels are too high.

Eating fat won't make you fat - that's as logical as saying eating tomatoes will turn you red, to quote a famous type 1!

All the best,

fergus

Hi fergus, could you please shed some light on how you achieved such a great weight loss and manage to keep it off. I currently weigh 9stones and my insulin intake is
8 Levemir
3 Novorapid
6 Novorapid
10 Novorapid
14 Levemir
(does this seem to much) :?:

Sugar pie,

more exercise = less insulin = less weight.

or

less carbs = less insulin = less weight

It's always the simple plans that work. :)

If you are only 9 stone how much do you need to lose, what height are you? 9 stone does not seem excessive in any way unless you are only about 4ft 6ins.

Hi Sugarpie.

Well, I will be joiningyou on the weihjtloss thing after I have my baby next week. To make you feel a bit better, I am only 5ft and weigh (without baby!) about 9 1/2 - 10 stone...so you are starting from a better place than me! W are also on similar levels of insulin

As t1, I have lost weight in the past, and that was by the good old eating less calorioes route...which in turn, becasue I mainly ate lots of veg, less insulin, and it worked! The rather depressing thing was that I did the diet with my husband and a few friends, and my weight loss was far slower than everyone elses. I would have weeks where there was no change..and then a sudden drop of a few pounds, and then a another week or 2 of no change.

I really wish there was an easier way..but ultimately, we have tocontrol our diabetes 1st, which in my case at least, means that the diet is a long term thing.

To be honest, reading you stats, you don't really have that much to lose, and this in itself can make it harder! If you were 15 stone, the changes that you have made would have already made a big impact.

Hi Sugar,
Good luck for next week! Hope all goes well with the new arrival.

It nice to hear from someone with the same problems!

The diet/ healthy eating plan has gone out of the window this week and I'm dreading the weekly weighin at my slimming group. But I plan to start being more organised and plan my meals and do a bit more exercise (good in theory). When I asked my diabetic specialist nurse about my slow weight loss she implied that I was making my diabetes an excuse, and it was no more difficult for me to loose weight than the next person (thats when the motivation started to wean).
Anyway I hope to be in a better frame of mind come tomorrow!

Let us know if you had a boy or girl?
:D

HI

I lost 2 stone when I was diganoised with type 2 diabetes back in 2005, but since then my weight has stayed the same, I do exercise and I realise that is what I am going to have to do more of, I was recently diagnoised with pcos as well (Polosystic Ovary Syndrome) apparantly it is harder to loose weight with that but still.

My blood sugar level is higher than it has been and if it doe's not change in the next few months I have to go onto insulan.

Dear Sugar Pie
Your BMI is around 22, well within the healthy weight range. Why do you think you need to lose?
Are you a young "Size 0" wanabee? Surely just toning up and getting fit would be good. Although 5'3" and 9 stone would put you in the same range as many ballet dancers. There's a formula for ideal size/height .
For 5'3"
first change height to inches~63 the divide by 2 and round up ~32. This should be your bust measurement if you're a B/C cup
Subtract 10 inches for waist ~22
Add 2 inches for hips~34.
In the olden days when I was young, that would have made you a standard size 10. that was before the clothing manufacturers started making stuff much bigger to con us that we're slimmer than we are. And when girls had waists.

I seriously doubt that you are fat. I know there's a lot of pressure among young girls to be skinny and that young diabetics risk their health by not taking their correct insulin dose. Don't! You should be gaining weight. You probably got too thin before your condition ( NOT illness) was diagnosed and you have probably got about another 4 years growing to do. If you are quite tall, you could look up the BMI tables for your height. However if you are average or small, you might not be able to. I was 5 feet 3 inches and 8 stone, when I went to secondary school. It was so long ago, we watched the dinosaurs play on the school field. Don't get obsessed with being thin. Get fit and healthy. Play games, be athletic. study hard, be a success, not a supermoron!
