Hi. This seems strange, but I was diagnosed as Type 2 two weeks ago, and put on Metformin 500 3 times daily. I've had no issues with the drug so moved to the full dose quite quickly. I have also reduced Carbs to less than 70g a day. I wear glasses, and about 5 days ago I started noticing that my eyesight was starting to worsen, and it has got steadily worse every day, until today when I was struggling to read a car number plate at the sort of distance you need to to pass your test. Has anyone else had these symtoms, and is it a normal part of normalising blood sugars ?

Should add that my A1c was 88 when I was diagnosed. With the drugs and change of diet I have got my fasting results down to the low 7's with even a 6.9 on one morning this week.

No point messing around when your eyes are at stake. Get yourself either to the GP or to the opticians for an eye check as soon as possible Personally I've had no problems eyesight wise and you should get an appointment for the retinopathy department fairly soon. You will get a check up every year. Keep up the good work on the levels. Hope you get it sorted soon

Good to get checked but the fluids in the eyeball are affected by high then low sugar levels, happened to many of us. It settles. I couldn't see to set washing machine etc. fine now

As Sue says glucose levels can affect your eyes. But your eyes are precious so definitely get them checked out.

I find that I have some bad times when I could really do with stronger glasses and others when I'm fine. I don't drive but definitely notice the fluctuation particularly when I'm reading or using my PC. However, my glucose levels are generally fairly stable, though a little higher than I'd prefer, and my recent annual retinopathy check showed no problems.

Thanks for the replies. I will get them checked ASAP, but it is reassuring to hear that this can happen

Hi , It can definitely be an issue, that was how I realised I had T2, my vision was so impaired. Im still having some issues 6 months in, but most of the time very manageable. The main thing as already suggested is get them checked. Im really lucky apart from very regular ophthalmology appointments, my local Spec savers are a god send too. Blood sugars and if you have high BP all can add to it. Just keep testing your bloods and get checked.I found i listened to a lot of music or the talk shows on the radio just for a rest . good luck:)

I had eyesight issues with double vision back in Dec after being T2 diabetic for 5 years. It was a kick up the backside to over haul my life. After a month of strict control my eye sight returned to normal. Those weeks were the scariest experience ever.

Plenty of useful info on this forum to help you get the fasting levels lower than what they are at the moment.

If blood sugars returns to normal from high in short span of time, some issue happens with eye fluid on retina wall. You should contact ratine specialist.

My eyesight went very blurry a couple of weeks after my levels starting coming down, I was scared stiff as no-one had told me to expect it. But it gradually started going back to normal after a couple of weeks and then quickly went back to normal. No harm in seeing someone about it but it would probably be a waste of time getting news specs as by the time you get them your eyes will probably be better ;)

Thanks for the replies. I am typing this wearing the glasses I wore for computer work before Xmas last year. I stopped having to wear them as I developed symptoms, and could wear my normal glasses, then after diagnosis a month ago and going onto Metformin and a low card diet my eyesight got really bad very quickly. I can now read stuff on the Sky Sports TV screen again so it looks like it has returned to normal again.
