Time to dust off my testing kit methinks!

I'm being treated to a 3 course Sunday lunch today.

It will be my carby-est meal for 2 years on the back of my best Hba1c results recently of 5% or 31.

I'm fascinated to see how my blood sugar levels respond - fingers crossed

Not being able to eat as many chocolate digestives as I used to.
Home cooked or eating out?

Enjoy. Hope that the blood test shows improved metabolism of carbs.

We ate out at a restaurant.

My pre meal reading was 4.4 on the meter.

Starter was deep fried Cajun sweet potato - small portion.

Main was a lovely roast beef dinner with Yorkshire pudding and roast potatoes and assorted vegetables.

Pudding was fruit salad and ice cream - I also ate my little boys ice cream as he was full

Although the meal was spread out well over an hour I tested 2 hours after the first bite.

That reading was 5.4

My 2 and a half hours reading was 4.7

So I think my body has become better at processing the carbs.

The question at the back of my mind is could I pass an OGTT?

Not sure I want to try though..

Loved the meal though and it was all washed down with a bottle of Chardonnay - around 12g carbs.

I think it's ok as an occasional treat but if I did that all the time my numbers would soon go up.

But I guess that's the same with anything.

I don't feel diabetic anymore. I know I could be but I'm not planning on it!

Great news. It sounds as if you're in a similar place to me, with improved carb tolerance as a result of a disciplined approach to diet. I'm assuming that my improved tolerance will not last for ever, particularly if I abuse it.

It won't last if you abuse it.
Well done, just limit number of times you stray into carb consumption.

Of course it depends on why the op van tolerate carbs now. If the beta cell function is restored then more carbs will be fine!

Can beta cell function be measured?
As far as I know, they only discover stuff about beta cells directly via autopsy. I guess the OGTT would be an indirect measure? Be interesting to know if there are other indirect methods. Maybe @phoenix can help us out with that?

Well done and congratulations!

May I suggest you do a bit of systematic portion and food testing, see where your safe zone lies, and then stay well within it?

With maybe a few tests (fasting, and 2 hrs after the more carby food) just to keep an eye on things.
I know from personal experience that the carb creep and 'just one more' mentality is a slippery slope.
So is the 'it was just a one-off, so I won't bother testing this time...'

As you can tell, I am a great back slider!

@Indy51, I agree most of out knowledge about beta cell mass has come from autopsies.
As far as I know they are still attempting to find methods that let them look at the cells 'in situ' using various forms of scans. (very specialised field of research)
This abstract suggests there is still a long way to go . http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25736590 I looked at the full paper; It's got a couple of images that say they show a mouse pancreas in situ. The whole paper is impenetrable for a non specialist

Excellent result but like you say probably best kept as a treat. You probably enjoy it more that way.
