@Wurst

Sorry another thing - when you said you had further problems with cholesterol, did you also see a return of your insulin resistance or did your new insulin sensitivity hang around? Did you have any other problems apart from your cholesterol numbers basically? Thanks :)

Hi Suzanneal, I stupidly starting eating saturated fats again thinking I had beaten the cholesterol. As a result LDL cholesterol rocketed and my doctor put me statins earlier this year. I saw the start of insulin resistance again after 'falling off the wagon' and went overboard with the exercise to mitigate it. Now with my cholesterol normalized I am happy with my insulin sensitivity and can further improve it with exercise. Fat can also raise your blood sugar slowly over time in my experience, a large portion of cheese would cause havoc with my fasting blood sugar.

I think the cholesterol problem is hereditary do you have any family history of cholesterol if so LCHF won't help it whatsoever ?

Some type 1's do become insulin resistant when going very low-carb, seen a few posts on the forum over the years discussing this very subject.

Have you tried changing your insulin, I'm just thinking that it may be possible that your insulin has been effected by the heat over the last week or so, if your not changed your cartridges I'd recommend you do and if that doesn't work look at the accuracy of your pens.

I'll tag some members who may be able to help you @Dillinger, @Spiker @LucySW @tim2000s
Hi Suzanneal, I'm type 1 and very resistant to insulin so my Apidra I take 2 X 500mg metformin tablets at each meal. I use Humulin I as my long lasting insulin. Some months ago my novorapid stopped working as I'd began to use a 1:1.5 gram of carb ratio ( almost 10:1 CP ratio) so I contacted forum and my DAFNE nurse who advised me try Apidra which has worked. I'm now using a 1:5 gram carb ratio (2:1 CP). I did DAFNE in 2013 and now mainly use DAFNE people not usual DSN.

@nigelho that is interesting, although I did not understand it all. I am on a pump and have been since age 11 so have been on Novarapid since then and nothing else - never heard of anyone changing insulin type on the pump is this something only relevant if you are objecting both short and long acting? Thanks again

Thank you @Wurst I think I will try cutting out the saturated fats or cutting them down at least. I don't eat cheese ect much except everyone once in a while but the effect you describe does fit what I have experienced with the coconut oil. Not straight away but after using it for some time. In your opinion would cutting down sat fats and replacing with monos whilst going slightly higher carb so reducing overall fat aswell, be a reasonable thing to try? From you experience that is? Or carbs remaining the same and upping the protein? That's maybe getting a bit involved so apologies! Such a great help to hear people's experiences.

Definitely worth a try , i saw the improvement within days after the fat left my blood stream (i'm guessing). I went a bit protein crazy at first as I wanted remain low carb as much as possible but saw a decrease in my GFR (Kidney function) so be careful with protein. It takes a while to get used to but I eat a lot of cabbage , low carb and low fat. The other thing I eat is fiber crackers again low carb and low fat.

Another thing I found to lower my cholesterol and improve insulin sensitivity is high dose artichoke tablets. I was prescribed statins but was on the lowest dose and forgot to take them alot of the time and still do.

Thanks great info - maybe a silly question but how did you know about drop in kidney function?

I had some sweet potato and actually a bit of cous cous which I never normally eat (no grains/gluten ever) after exercise last night and some more carbs introduced today (sweet potato and some berries) but feeling lousy today even though sugar levels are better... So going to experiment with less sat fats but try and not go crazy on the carbs.

I seem to have retained a massive amount of fluid with the carbs (maybe more from the wee bit grains I had in the cous cous). I'm like a chubby toddler today so feeling maybe that's not the way to go!

Cheers guys

My doc is suggesting my cholesterol problem is also hereditary and given me till the autumn to show that LCHF will sort it.... I doubt it will, reduced sats and increased unsats and going to be interested to see how it goes... my BG control is okay.... I think / hope..

Because of my cholesterol being too high and i was having blood tests every 3 months , which included the kidney function. I was quite concerned and went to a kidney specialist who advised there was no damage (phew) but advised to reduce the protein intake.

I initially refused statins and asked for time try and sort out the cholesterol naturally, big mistake and total waste of time :)

I wasted a lot of time trying to sort it out naturally. I do recommend high dose artichoke tablets as a 'natural' remedy

Hi,

~You may find that the large amount of water retention is caused by one particular food, or type of food. For me it is grains, wheat in particular. Starchy veg doesn't seem to cause it.

Of course, your food reactions may be very different, but worth looking at...

Thanks @Brunneria it literally came on overnight after I had the small amount of grains, it would make sense that I might have a reaction to that because iv cut them out for so long. My throat feels swollen up and everything!

Hi just wondered about something you say you are struggling with your workouts!.....how much fat are you taking in? If you have cut carbs you need a source of energy & fat is the place to get it from, ketogenic style works best for me. 70% fat 25% protein 5% carbs that is my macro breakdown

I use a German brand (i live in Germany) here is the link I'm sure there must be an equivalent where ever you are :-

http://www.tetesept.de/de/produkte/magenverdauung/lebergalle/produktdetail_cc_5215.html

Initially I was taking 3 per day, now LDL is normalized I only take 1 per day. There is also a cholesterol lowering margarine spread by flora , tastes like shoe polish but is very effective.

Good luck.
Hi @Wurst , this item does not seem to be available in the UK even on eBay!!
The closest I can find is this.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0013OUJ8U?keywords=artichoke&qid=1436082003&ref_=sr_1_4&sr=8-4
would be grateful for your thoughts.
Many thanks
Hj

The linked product looks pretty similar to what I'm using. Might be worth visiting a local health food shop to see what they have. Also you can get tinned artichoke or raw artichoke.
@Wurst many thanks for your reply, Hj
