URGENT HELP. Trimethoprim?

I don't like onions or spiders. Nor hot foods! Sorry spice lovers!
I'm currently on Trimethoprim, and I THINK it's affecting my blood sugars...

(Sorry if you're american, in which case, english blood sugars are from 4 - 8 where I am)

Right, my normal blood sugars are 8. And I take 15 units of insulin (fast acting).

I took this tablet, and at dinner my blood were 27.9, I took a huge 23 units of insulin, barely ate much, and ended up with a 26.7

Is trimethoprim doing this?
Thanks!

(Please no "well, obviously!")

holliebobstarr - hello and welcome to the forum.

I am type 2 diabetic so am not much use to you at all, however I wanted to tell you that Trimethropin is an anti-biotic, you will have been prescribed this medication to treat some kind infection, probably a urinary tract infection?

Any infection, virus, stress, etc can cause your blood sugars to rise, I note that you are a type 1 diabetic, you have very high numbers there. I urge you to test for ketones, also call NHS direct for advice or take yourself to A&E.
Dont wait until tomorrow or until after the weekend, your blood glucose is too high and I am worried re ketones and because you said that you are not feeling very well at all.

I hope you get better very soon.

I agree with Whitbyjet. It is more likely the infection is putting up your blood sugars than the Trimethoprim.

I am a type 2 but on insulin and have been having trouble with my blood sugars for the past week or so. I've just been started on a course of Trimethoprim today. I have to phone my Dr on Monday if my sugars are still high.

As you are a type 1 i would get help sooner though. Phoning NHS Direct as Whitbyjet said is a good idea.

Hi - I have just had exactly the same problem. What was the eventual outcome with your case. I have been told to stick with it by a GP Doctor specialising in Diabetes

I know I'm resurrecting a really old post here but just thought that I would chime in - I have just been told by my GP to come off this medication because it was affecting my sugars so badly - my sugars have not been below 20 in the 5.5 days that I have been taking this - the infection cleared two days agoand still no joy.

Just goes to show, everyone is different. I've been on Trimethoprim and it didn't have a drastic effect on my blood sugar.
