Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hi, I have been on Byetta for about 4 months now, my levels were ALWAYS high in the mornings on waking, often 10+. My HbAc1 was tested after 6 weeks on Byetta and had dropped from 8.6 to 6.7 - I got the results from the doctor at the hospital while having my 6 monthly eye check. We were both delighted to see that the macular problems had improved (the only change has been the Byetta), and now will see him in 9 months instead of 6. I would like to start taking lutein as it was recommended to my dad by the consultant in the same department after he had a cataract fixed. can anyone recommend a good one.

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hi Liz.

Personally, I am not a lover of any sort of supplement except totally natural ones so I had no idea about Lutien until you asked about it. This is a link to a website which gives a lot of information about it. Hope this helps.

As a 'spit' user myself since January of this year I can vouch for it's efficacy and in addition to some of it's benefits. However, take a look at a previous post I made regarding eyesight which involved reducing my carbohydrate intake and the massive benefit to my eyesight. Just a thought instead of a supplement ?

So, welcome to the forum. Take a good look around and if you have any further questions just ask.

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Good morning,
I saw my consultant yesterday, good news...Byetta is working for me.
After 5 weeks, HBC1 down from 8.1 to 7.5, weight loss 8 kilos, feeling good, continuing with 5 units twice a day with further reduction of Lantus from 60 units pm and 30 units am to only 40 units pm.
Novorapid (100 units daily, pre Byetta) is history! Still taking 4 X 500 mg metformin SR
We discussed a once weekly dose of Byetta as a future option, is anyone on this?

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hi Vivienne.

Great to hear you are doing so well and - no more Insulin. What a result. Well done. :D

The once weekly Byetta is still in the pipeline I'm afraid. As soon as we hear anything it will get posted here. There is a new drug Victoza which is once daily but the side effects list is like a telephone directory !! We have one person on it at the moment who is keeping us updated about her progress.

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Have just had my three month review on the 10 pen. Excuse me if I sound like I'm boasting but I've just been told 'I'm a success story'. Didn't think this would happen as the first two months were horrendous, nausea, vomiting etc, but hopefully this has settled now. Anyway, sugars HbA1c down to 7.7 from 10.1, blood pressure down to 130, cholesteral 2.8, gone down 2 dress sizes, weight down by 3 stone. Was told to increase my liquid intake though as kidney function not quite as it should be, must admit now sugars down I'm not so thirsty all the time and I forget to drink!
Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that although it does get better, strangely I somehow miss the nausea as it definitely curbs your appetite, was loving the quick weight loss and also the complete lack of hunger. Do people find their weight increases again once they pass the nausea stage?

Tizzzzy,
Fortunately I haven't done the nausea stuff (5 weeks on Byetta) and weight is declining, so hopefully your weight will keep going down too.

Hi Vivienne

Thanks for your response, great that you haven't experienced nausea, one thing that made me laugh at review was the comment the diabetic nurse made, although a lot of her patients were experiencing the nausea, nobody wanted to come off Byetta, I don't imagine there are many drugs that have this response!

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hello again

I have have yet another question :)

I have now been on Byetta 8 weeks. I moved up to the 10 pen 2 weeks ago. Most of the time it works very well for me in curbing appetite which has been a great help in losing weight. I have noticed though, that occasionally, I do get a strong craving to eat which doesnt happen most of the time. Sometimes it is in the morning, but most often in the evening. I am not sure why this is happening. I try to curb it by eating ready made up sugar free jellies, or a handful of nuts, but not always successfully!! I am wondering if it is my new lower carb diet that could be causing it?
Does anyone else get the same problem?

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

I started on the 5m dose of Byetta on Tuesday evening. I felt nauseous for the first 24 hours or so but it seems to have settled quite quickly. My Novorapid has been significantly reduced but my background Levemir remains unchanged. My BS levels have remained consistent with pre Byetta so far. I am sticking to the one hour before breakfast and dinner which is a pain - only in view of timing. I will see how things go.

Back to the hospital in three weeks to increase to 10m.

My substantial reduction in carbs for the previous three months led to a zero reduction in weight. Maybe the Byetta will help to address this issue as time goes on.

Regards to all.

Keefyboy :)

Hi Keefy

You dont have to wait an hour to inject it. You can take it any time UP to an hour before. I usually inject mine as i am dishing up my meal. I find it much easier

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Candyog,
You are not a failure, you have lost 3 stone in 9 weeks...phenomenal!
just focus on one thing at a time, get your ankle sorted, stick with metformin, relax and let your body heal. Then hopefully restart Byetta.
Think positive,
Vivienne :D

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Hi candog.

Sorry to hear you have been taken off the Byetta and that you were having problems.

It appears to me that you are being dealt with by a GP and a Nurse ? If this so please get yourself referred to an Endocrinologist before going onto Insulin or any other meds. You need to see a Specialist.

Re: Anyone use Byetta?

Update:

I contacted this thread some time ago when I quivered with anxiety at giving myself that first jab. This was last February -five months ago. Now I jab myself like a pro - and yes, it IS almost painless.

Byetta has made a huge difference. I have lost two stone and dropped all my diabetes medication apart from metformin. The most notable event was the dramatic change from the 5 to the 10 jab after the first four weeks. Had nausea for five weeks thereafter but not cripplingly so. Nevertheless I can still sometimes feel rather bloated some months later - plus a mild tummy ache. I might add at this point that my American friends worry a lot for me about taking Byetta as I believe it has had a bad press over there - hopefully as a result of some quirky and inaccurate reporting.

My blood sugars are lowering to about 7 or less, although I suffered a series of horrid hypos about a month ago as my loss in weight increased Byetta's efficacy (readings in the low 3's four nights in a row - so unilaterally stopped my evening 1mg dose Amaryl. Hope my nurse doesn't read this before we next meet!)

Nevertheless my early morning readings remain high (7.7 - 8.0) despite not having eaten overnight! I read elswehere of this weird 'early morning phenomenon' but tend to shrug my shoulders and made the decision to stop taking the evening amaryl as it was causing me hypos and I was passing out. These hypos have now stopped

The most curious side effect is my inability to eat much for dinner - I abruptly feel 'full' and even mildly sick were I to attempt to eat any more. This is particularly so with red meats, fatty food, and exotically spiced food and strong fishtastes. I used to love them but now feel ill at the thought of them! On the other hand I crave fruit and can eat any amount of bready cakes.

I wonder if any one else has had changes in their tastes?
