...thought I would say hi :D
I'm 20-year old, female, type one, live in London.
Just graduated from uni, job hunting (limited success)
Looking to make new friends to share the highs and the lows of diabetes (!).
At the moment Levemir and Humalog but may be changed.
Doing DAFNE next week, I have heard it's life-changing stuff.

The worst kind of dating website, where everyone has diabetes and they stay up late on diabetes forums (fora?)...
I always find when I meet other diabetic people I always want to know about their diabetes (mainly cause I hardly know any diabetics and I like to have a point of reference!).
Soooo... what kind of diabetic are you? Are you good? Are you bad?
And just to keep it sane...what do you do?

Hi I'm a 26 yo type 2 diabetic and have been trying to control it for about 3 years. First on Metformin, then with Piaglitazone and Glimpiride. Just stopped Piaglitazone and I am now taking Byetta with the Metformin and Glimpiride.

Diabetes control has been poor (which was a plus in some ways cos it helped me lose 6 stone! Lol) despite changes to my diet. Last year I ended up spending a night in hospital because of hyperglycemia, recently had similar problems due to having swine flu which sent sugars up to around 30/32. Finally got them down to 16, but its a work in progress, hopefully the Byetta and an increase in Glimpiride will bring them down. We shall see...

Anyway, good to meet you all!

Debz x

Your HBA1c is 3.8%?!
How on earth did you manage that?

Clare

Bl**dy good question. My theory is a bad case of DP pulling my figures down low during the night. Plus I'm on 2/3 hypos a day...but I'm getting better! I blame the forum, brainwashing me. I feel the need to self-flagellate now everytime my figures are over 6.

Hiya!

Im 23, type 1, diagnosed 10 days ago. It is nice to hear from other people who have diabetes and how they manage their condition etc. Such a big adjustment. In my final year of university. Good luck with the job hunting :) peace out x

Diagnosed 10 days ago? You're probably feeling a bit overwhelmed! Count yourself lucky it didn't happen in your teen years when you want to rebel and stuff. I hear that really sucks. How are you finding it so far?

Anything that'll wake us up before noon on a weekend...
Yeah it sucked... Imagine having to check the nutritional value of cider to see how much sugar's in it!

Anyway, here's my dating profile:

18y/o type II diabetic. 6'4 rugby player, enjoys long walks on the beach and long pub crawls. Student of medicine, with a U18 euro cup runner's up medal in rugby.

PS loves Guinness... And Magners...

Also, asking the same question as lionrampant 'what did you study?'

Hey :D
I just finished at Manchester doing Cell Biology. I think diabetes is what piqued my interest in science, before diagnosis I was really into languages.

My kind of girl :D :p And on the note of spanish food folks, it may be hard to count carbs in a tapas bar but it's worth it!

10 days in and yep its all a bit new. This forum is great though. Im getting stressed with carb counting, firstly i dont know my ratio yet and secondly i dont know by looking at food how many grams of carb will be in! Everyone is finished eating by the time I decide on the units of insulin...I sit there like im working out the worlds most complicated equation :p....

DAFNE course? ive been reading about that. You must let me know how it goes. Im jealous! (sad...yes)

Im studying pharmacy and we learn so much about drug delivery systems and the 'insulin delivery problem'...and now that it relates to me, im deeply interested in area.....guess it will help me in my exams!

Clare, what LA dose do you take? whats ur CP:QP ratio at meals? Check me out using 'diabetic short hand'....lol..this is all so strange. This forum is really great though.

Eva :)

Hi Eva:)
I don't carb count at the moment (I think technically that makes me a bad person, especially in this forum). They tried to teach me at my previous clinic but I was at boarding school at the time and portion control and stuff like that was near on impossible. So this is my second attempt!
Was taking 28u of Levemir (my LA) but my specialist decided to split the dose so I am now taking 14u in the morning at 14u before bed. It's all a bit up and down at the mo, I really need DAFNE to hurry up and come so I can get myself sorted out... (So in answer to your Q I don't have a CP ratio YET. Ask me in a week, and I might :D

That's cool you're studying Pharmacy. I lived with 5 Pharmacy students in my final yr at uni. I kept thinking it looked fun, and then I realised it actually looked really hard! Where are you studying it?

Hiya,
yeah im studying in Nottingham, only one year to go though!..studying at the moment for exams i didnt do at christmas time due to a ' strange fainting episode'...just learning about the GLUCOWATCH G2 BIOGRAPHER..im finally interested in something to do with my course..lol.

Im struggling with the whole novorapid dosing, i took 5 units before breakfast, ate 4 pieces of brown bread, 2 plums and coffee and had a mild hypo 2 hours later. im sick of drinking coke and eating biscuits when im not hungry!! Do you think its bad if your blood sugar doesnt really increase when you eat, say for example i start the day at 4 then take 5 units of novorapid and eat, then one hour later its 4.8, then two hours later its 3.1.

Ahh confusion prevails! life goes on :)

hey guys,

i'm 22, nearly graduated but have to do re-takes in september as i did all my exams pre-diagnosis and high as a kite.

in kent at the moment but hope to move to london to work once i get back on track. like you acron i'm 'hypoing' few times a day but rarely below 3.5 so i aint to worried although my diabetic nurse is, but then she told me i can go up to 10 after meals so i ain't really gonna listen to her lol. nice to hear of other young students on here, makes me feel more normal lol.

+ how do you guys find partying since diagnosis?

Hi Eva, NovoRapid has a very quick onset period but it does last for up to 2+ hours in some cases. Since you were diagnosed at Christmas I would assume you're still in the "honeymoon" period, which means even small doses can have big effects. What kind of long-acting insulin are you on?

I should also point out that if you're at 4.0 then you're probably (most definitely) on your way to a hypo anyway. In this instance it would be interested to see what would have happened with no injection of NovoRapid at all.

P.S. Wish food didn't make my BG go up ;)

Sorry for the double post folks, I just noticed this other reply.

Yeah your nurse sounds rather moronic. Or uneducated in diabetes, which is more likely. Some hypos are kinda par for the course at your stage - just try and be careful with your bolus doses as just like with Eva (post above) you'll see a much higher level of sensitivity to such injections because you're in your honeymoon period.
