I think you ought to ask to be referred to a diabetic clinic at a hospital. It sounds like you need help from someone who knows more about Type 1. Most Type 1s attend hospital clinics.

I wish my surgery was like that. I honestly think if I turned up they would just say that the Diabetic Nurse was in appointments and could not see me and then they would try and force me to see a GP. Whenever i tried to see a Diabetic Nurse at short notice they have always push me into the care of GP who they say has an interest in Diabetic Care

This is the point where you have to put your foot down and insist on a diabetic nurse, in my experience GPs cannot offer guidance on insulin for type 1's.

How's your levels looking so far this evening ?

Acceptance of health treatment claims that are not adequately supported by evidence. I dislike it when people sell ineffective and even harmful alternative health products to exploit the desperation of people with chronic illness.
This GP may have an interest in diabetes but his comments don't say much for his level of knowledge about it. I agree with the others - T1s need specialist care from at least a diabetes specialist nurse, or an endocrinologist if there is anything out of the ordinary that requires a higher level of care.

How's your levels looking so far this evening ?

my levels before I went to bed was 8.5. I checked again at 3am and it was then 8.9. I checked At 5.30am and it was 9.8. It seems to be going up. I also went to the toilet a lot last night. I only had vegetables and chicken for dinner. The GP changed my Insulin yesterday from Humalin M3 to Lantus. Yesterday I took Humalin M3 in the morning 30 units. When I went to the GP in the afternoon he then switch me to Lantus and told me to take 24 units at 6pm which I did. My blood sugar before I took the Lantus was 8.2. The GP said that the Lantus works for 24 hours so I should take it again at 6pm tonight. I have had breakfast 2 x slice of wholemeal toast and cheese. I will check in a couple of hours how that is affecting my blood sugars with the Lantus. If my blood sugar levels keep going up I will go back to Humalin M3 insulin and wait to go and see my Diabetic Specialist Nurse which will be on the 8th September.

Morning Jimmy,

To be honest your levels were pretty good last night and stable more importantly, no big swings. I am not familiar with your insulin types and although for you this may be higher than normal but they are still not high. Please remember that although this has made you feel nervous it is still fairly good. I would still try and get your apt bought forward as you need to sit down with a diabetic nurse to run through the change over and put your mind at rest as its unsettled you. Do call today and as mentioned before try and push to get referred to your local hospital also.

Best wishes ;)

Sorry forgot to mention, if your worried about rising BG levels try a carb free breakfast, bacon and eggs and test to see results, wholemeal bread is carb heavy so a changeover would prevent going up, just remember to test and check every couple of hours.

Hi managed to see the Diabetic Nurse today and she was quite amazed that the GP only gave me Lantus. She suggested that I go back on a mixed Insulin Humalog.

Sorry forgot to mention that the reason she suggested Humalog is because I was not too keen on going on 4 injection per day regime. I would have inject the fast acting Insulin 3 times per day and then the Lantus once per day.

That's a big sigh of relief - well done for getting the apt today, you can relax now (well as much as a type 1 can relax that is...)

Thank you all for your help and support. Diabetes can be very confusing even if you have been a Diabetic for a while. I think forum like these offer great support to people like me. I will keep you guys updated on my progress with the Humalog Insulin.
