What test was used for your diagnosis?

Can I ask the good people on this forum if they were diagnosed using a testing method other than HBa1c ?

To clarify where you diagnosed using one of the following methods.
  • A fasting plasma glucose test measures your blood glucose after you have gone at least eight hours without eating or drinking anything but plain water. This test is used to detect diabetes or pre-diabetes.
  • An oral glucose tolerance test measures your blood sugar after you have gone at least eight hours without eating and drinking and two hours after you drink a glucose-containing beverage. This test can be used to diagnose diabetes
  • A random plasma glucose test, your doctor checks your blood glucose without regard to when you ate your last meal. This test, along with an assessment of symptoms, is used to diagnose diabetes but not pre-diabetes.

Sea filth!
I had the fasting random test. I went to my GP about something unrelated (an allergic reaction) for my first visit in over 5 years and got collared for a blood test because I was late 40's and they automatically do Cvd checks.

It returned a BS level of 26.

I had a random plasma glucose test and an HbA1c test at the same time as part of a routine over 60's review. I was called back in for a fasting test, which was another plasma glucose test and another HbA1c. (12 days after the first tests). Then I was given my diagnosis of Type 2.

Acceptance of health treatment claims that are not adequately supported by evidence. I dislike it when people sell ineffective and even harmful alternative health products to exploit the desperation of people with chronic illness.
I have a strong family history of diabetes and was previously overweight, so I was tested for diabetes annually from my 20s onwards. I can't remember which type of test but I think they were FBGs. At the age of 38 one of them showed prediabetes and was followed by HbA1c and for some unknown reason, GTT. My GP told me the usual practice in NZ now is to use the HbA1c for screening.

Thank you at my practice if you have two random blood glucose measurements over 11.1 which is also a diagnosis method advocated by NICE and the WHO. The practice will not accept the results and insist on a positive HBA1c which can miss diabetes under certain circumstances. If the HBA1c comes back below the cut off point they will ignore the two random tests and offer no explaination other than you are NOT diabetic! Which would indicate that random blood tests are not accurate so why are NICE and WHO saying they are? There seems to be a correlation between testing methods used and the area you live in. For example someone in Wales could be diagnosed diabetic based on two random blood sugars but someone in England is not even though both patients had the same result.

I had 2 fasting Blood Tests, about 3 months apart, both of which showed a figure of 6.5. As far as I know I didn't have a hba1c test done.

Pasta, sorry to me it's vile, yeuch lol (and full of nasty carbs)
Lots of fasting glucose tests but was diagnosed officially by the OGTT (oral glucose tolerance test) which was well above the normal parameters.

I had a random finger prick test after a emergency admittance to hospital for something not connected - it was 28.something then a Hba1c whilst in hospital of 11.something - also had high keytones thought I was T1 for a short while.

Brilliant! 11 years ago they were still relying on urine sticks! They would not do so today. When was your last HBa1c test?

I had my bloods tested for something unrelated and the doctor threw in a BG test because there is family history of diabetes (my dad). Tests showed FBG of 8.8 both the times April '15 and June '15. Never tested hba1c. Will be getting one in September. I'm planning to ask for a fructosamine test instead because of low iron levels.

My first reading of 26 was when I was admitted to A&E which went down to 23 after an hour on a saline drip, two days later my Dr did 2 fasting glucose tests a week apart while we were waiting for my Hb results to come in, the first was 16.9 and the second was 11, then my Hb results came in at 100.

Lying on a beach all day, arrogant/rude/superficial people, not being able to get necessary help from health professionals
I went to Dr's feeling ill. All I was eating was jam/lemon curd sandwiches or on toast and drinking full coke...which I'd always hated. Straight for a full blood test...7.8.

It seems that the majority of people were diagnosed through fasting blood glucose test, which is surprising.
But are we talking about the past? NZ may be different but current practice here is to screen for diabetes using HbA1c and only use FBG if there is a specific reason, while just a few years ago they used FBG a lot more.

Bullies, discrimination of any kind, bad manners, parents who let their kids run amok & spoil things for everyone else, unkind spiteful people, being a clumsy clod, toast crumbs in the bed, cold feet!!
I was diagnosed in February this year. I was experiencing osmotic changes due to very high blood glucose. My GP visited me at home for another medical problem. Whilst there, he did a capillary blood test. The meter reading showed high 20's. What fun since then!!! Nothing will ever be the same again. Ho hum.
