I am wondering are there any links between diabetes and ear/hearing problems? It seems to me that if diabetes affects nerve endings then the chances of hearing being affected must be significantly high.

I hope somebody can answer this problem too. My hearing has deteriorated in the last few years since being diagnosed. I equated that with a serious ear infection I had around the same time which sent me totally deaf for about 3 months. Any ideas :?:  :|

I was diagnosed T2 almost 2 yrs ago, last year shortly after flying I had a problem set in with my left ear.

I have seen ENT and still undergoing research into problem, had CT scan yesterday, he seems to think it is sinus related (this would make sense as there is a strong history with myself and close family of sinus problems). However, I cannot help thinking it might be related to Diabetes, although right shows no problems as such, it was this ear that I first noticed Tinnitus around 2/3 years ago. I have slight hearing loss only in that ear, tinnitus apparently often goes hand-in-hand with hearing loss, and is a kind of nerve damage, that is why I felt it could be a result of Diabetes.

I also suffer fron tinnitus too. I had a hearing test about 10 days ago which proved that I had hearing loss. Now I'm waiting for my doctor to refer me to an ear, nose and throat specialist. I knew something was wrong as I keep losing my balance so easily.

Yes, I also have minor balance problems, bump into things easily! Failing any other replies to my question as yet I am going to do some research on internet. Will get back with any findings. Also, would be interested to hear how you get on with ENT. I was somewhat phased when mine asked me which bit bothered me the most, i.e. the stuffed and muffled feeling in my ear, lack of hearing properly or tinnitus, I told him all of them and he asked what I would like him to do. At this point, I laughed and told him I would like him to wave a magic wand, but seriously - what he was saying was could I live with it - I have spoken to several people with similar ear problems who have had treatment. Also, as a College Lecturer, not hearing is very difficult - I have to keep telling people, and it makes you look stupid when people speak and you look blank because you cannot hear them. :? Although the problem did originate after flying, but still wondering if it is the diabetes has made me more susceptible, as I also have slight hearing loss in right ear (this I did not realise until I did the audiogram test) - or maybe just too much rock music when I was younger :!: Also people tend not to want to listen when you tell them about it, they cannot understand it and therefore cannot empathise - makes me feel like I am being neurotic, but it is a very real problem

Keep in touch, and I will do the same - good luck!

Some people i work with have no sympathy at all. As though I'm not quite human?! wait till they get some health problems.
I reached 45 and things started 'going wrong' healthwise. Can diabetes affect teeth/gums too?
Losing weight has helped a little, so far, but the bad bits far outweigh the good so far.

Hi Gilly H,

I was doing ok until 2 years ago when diagnosed with diabetes, went to Drs because did not have the stamina I used to, two children with Thyroid conditions so thought I would get mine checked - I was floored when told had T2. I know that diabetes definitely affects teeth and gums, that is a recognised diabetic fact, you are advised to inform your dentist if you are diabetic.

Stay in touch, I think we have much in common, I had a quick peek at your profile - hope you don't mind :)

Thanks for that info. Dentist does know that I'm diabetic. The one gum problem I do suffer from is bleeding gums. Can get nasty at times.
There are so many side effects of having diabetes like dental problems. Isn't diabetes enough?

Since last writing I have done some internet research, and found the following topics relating to diabetes and ear problems, the first is relating to gradual hearing loss, which is not necessary related to diabetes but does mention it - http://www.earhelp.co.uk/PresbycusisAndSociocusis.html.

Will keep you informed of any other relevant material on the subject!

Hi Cugila,

I thought it made sense, if diabetes affects nerves, then it seems to me that it could follow that it would affect hearing. My hearing problems only started around a year ago, and I was diagnosed as T2 two years ago! I really could not help wondering about connections. Heaven knows how long I had been diabetic before diagnosis, pure chance that I found out, I could still be walking around today completely oblivious and consuming heaven knows how much sugar (always was predisposed to sweet things!
