Ive got a copy of a letter that was sent to my GP from my Diabetic consultant and I,m very confused ...

He tested my GAD and this is the results and some of the things that have been said in the letter, GAD, islet cell and IA-2 antibodies all negative.

Then (I,ll limit the exact wording) This maybe because he was diagnosed 43 year ago and is possible I may have anitibody negative Diabetes.
Then some history of type 2 in the family Dad and his Sister late on in life) and it mabe a monogenic form of Diabetes

He wants to review the circumstances surrounding my initial diagnosis and and lastly mentions that wether or not it might be useful to see if I have any residual beta-cell function.

I have not got a clue what this all means so I,m going to do a google search but if any of you have any insight to what all this means please post a reply

Basically, while you were diagnosed T1 43 years ago, you do not display the usual symptoms of autoimmune diabetes (the negative test for GAD and other antibodies).

As a result the consultant thinks you may have one of rarer forms of diabetes, and is likely to send you for a C-Peptide test to see if you have any remaining function of your beta cells, i.e., do you still produce any insulin?

Hi Gaz.

Monogenic form of diabetes is MODY. There are many different forms of this and there are specific tests that can be done for it. Exeter is the specialist centre in MODY and has a very good website with information about it - Google it. It is directly hereditary via a mutated gene unlike Types 1and 2. There are some MODYs on the forum, so maybe one will be along soon and will be able to give you more details about tests.

its really alot to take in after so long as type 1, which I still maybe but seems unlikely. I know without a doubt I have no insulin production by my levels, I have had all the classics, thyroid, carpel tunnel, trigger finger, that thing when a tendon snaps in a finger, also a hip replaced and a fibular bone graft in the other hip and the list can go on. I see the consultant on the 23rd regarding a pump so may or may not find out more then and thankyou all for the replies

hmmm Ive just found the first letter I got with the test results on and this is from the same blood test that the opening post is about, anyway here what he originally said

Bloods from 20th July 2015 - GAD antibodies = 6.3 IU/ml , islet cell antibody negative, IA-2 awaited

So the GAD result showed a reading then he says it was negative, I will take both these letters to the Hospital when I see him regarding the pump at the end of the month.

approx 10% of type 1's are GAD antibody negative. Including me! I've been on insulin since diagnosis 9months ago as my own insulin production (c-peptide test) is reducing each time they test. It may be a rare monogenic version or you could just stay type 1 and nothing have to change .
