    Oat bran response

thanks all, I'll probably just avoid it. I can't imagine it's going to make a deal of difference to the cholesterol in any case, may have to give in and go for statins. Alas it's likely hereditary (FH).

    Oat bran response

Hi all, does anyone know what the insulin response of oat bran is like? Background - my previously sticky 42-44 range is now down to steady 36-37 with low carb (plus a couple of months of CGM wearing to test stuff), so great. I only eat yoghurt and nuts/seeds for breakfast (this seems to be...

    hba1c drop by 12 points ?

That's what my lab report says, which was Sussex Pathology ltd (which does the testing for onedaytests.com). I can't find much else though. Here is another testing company, they claim it's based on US ADA recommendations...

    hba1c drop by 12 points ?

Just got myself another test after 6 months and it comes out at 36. I have been very bad at exercise recently (too much DIY and work) but still good at the other aspects of low-carb. One of the key changes, it seems, is to never eat carbs for breakfast. Well perhaps a croissant once per month or...

    hba1c drop by 12 points ?

Thanks all, did another test (same testing company, but they are a reputable lab so I don't expect there is a systemic issue) and got exactly the same. I'm now suspicious that the numbers are identical :D I will just accept it I think and keep up the 3-6 monthly testing and hope that the better...

    Dark Chocolate

Any 100% chocolate I have tried to eat has been like chewing a bar of compressed dust. I must say the Lindt 85%+ stuff isn't much better. My favourite (in the UK) is Sainsbury's Ugandan 90%, it's really smooth. Alternatively the Lidl own-brand 85% is also pretty good. I've tried making my own...

    hba1c drop by 12 points ?

Yes it was on the bike. I'm a keen cyclist anyhow so I do that kind of thing occasionally. I've been out quite a lot in the last few weeks actually. But I have been doing that type of exercise for at least 5 years, and attempting lower carb eating also. I have always resented the fact that this...

    hba1c drop by 12 points ?

For the past 6 years since I first got a prediabetic hba1c test my levels have ranged between 40-44, depending on how good I've been with the low carb. It was 44 last time (6 months ago) so I have been trying harder to avoid carbs. Today I got a value of 32! Much as I'd like to believe it WAS...

Reversing T2 versus lowering hba1c, LCHF versus low calorie

Thanks but my BMI is 21 to start with. If I lost 8% that would put me on 60kg at 177cm, which I would not be able to achieve without losing some muscle mass ie not healthy. My problem is not caused by being fat, inside or out.

Reversing T2 versus lowering hba1c, LCHF versus low calorie

There are plenty of people (me included) for whom a low-calorie diet would probably end up with them being hospitalised due to malnutrition. I am not and never have been overweight. I don't need to lose any weight but I would still have BG numbers too high without the low-carb approach. That...

    Spikes when exercising

Interesting to hear from T1 viewpoint. I am pretty bad for just forgetting to eat during long rides but the worst that will happen is I just get slower. But if you are T1 you could presumably put yourself in difficulty doing that. Could you pull back out of a low by going harder again...

    Spikes when exercising

It's amazing how far you CAN get without carbs, but I do need them for longer rides. I'm not keto though. I never 'carb load' beforehand for cycling since it's easy to take stuff with you (less fun for running though I guess). A regular 55km circuit I do takes about 2h and I just do that fasted...

    Spikes when exercising

Yes this definitely chimes with my experience. If I'm running 5k or 10k then I'm generally doing it as fast as I can, or cycling making the terrain as hard as I can - I don't have a lot of time for exercise so I try to make the most out of it! In that case I am attempting to stress myself and I...

    Going on holiday

I went to the Love Parade in Berlin in 2002, I remember my vegetarian friend ordering a veggie salad and it has speck in it (kind of like german pancetta). When challenged the waiter said "It's not meat, it's speck".

    Going on holiday

It's only a week, I'd not worry about it too much. Don't go crazy but don't sit there in every restaurant trying to deny yourself. Carbs aren't poison, you just need to have long-term control over them. A week of eating 'normally' won't give you diabetes. I guess you'll be doing plenty of...

    Orange Almond Cake

Luckily no problems at the other end today :D Erythritol is £6.99/kg from amazon so £1.40 worth in that cake. The most expensive bit is the 5 eggs! I know what you mean though, I have spent a small fortune on various substitute/alternative bags of stuff (vital wheat gluten, coconut flour...

    Orange Almond Cake

Just made this excellent cake, but substituted the sugar 1:1 for erythritol. Took slightly longer to cook (have made it before with sugar). I can honestly say in 4 months of doing this low-carb thing that this is the first 'substitute' baked good I've made where it actually is just as good as...

    Spikes when exercising

Sounds plausible! Thanks for sharing, I figured it can't only be me seeing these things. Admittedly my training hasn't been so regular recently due to house renovations, injuries etc so perhaps I just need to get a better schedule together to ameliorate these peaks.

    Spikes when exercising

Yes quite possibly it's worse in the mornings, I don't have enough data to be able to compare at the moment. My last sensor just ran out, I need to buy a couple more. Problem is there aren't that many times of the day I can fit in 6 hours on the bike and also see the rest of the family :D

    Spikes when exercising

I tried the 'breakfast carbs to avoid spike' method too, with no benefit. Still a spike to 13ish. It's strange that the worst spikes I get are from exercise, not food. @KennyA The data that was shared from a guy on the the Super Sapiens forum showed him hitting almost 10 during exercise, so it...
