Does it ever hurt to start insulin early?

I'd start on insulin and not use Metformin. Be careful though and have some Graze bars, Lucozade or something with you at all times in case you get hypo with insulin, it takes time to get used to it and exercise or being unwell will affect your insulin doses. We've been there, just ask, it's a...

    Need advice with treating Hypos

I have Naked bars when I'm low as well as Graze bars, they taste good and you can eat them quickly. Good luck x

    Feeling down.

Hi Raymond J Please talk to your family and ask if there is a counsellor at school, you do need someone you can trust that you can offload onto. Being T1 can be overwhelming and you can get lots of support and help on here. Hang in there, it will get better x

link between type 1 diabetes and thyroid diseases and autoimmune diseases?

I had an overactive thyroid which was operated on to remove most of it before being diagnosed with T1. Thyroid became underactive after the op (that was the plan) so on thyroxine. Much easier to control and doesn't affect my BG. Good luck

    One HbA1C per year?

I've never seen a consultant so don't know if that is a good thing or not! Seems to be going well without that. The local Consultant Endocrinologist came out to an event organised by my surgery, he was so dour it would be enough to make you jump off a cliff if your results weren't good! Mind...

Wow, it must depend on where you live perhaps? Good for you x

    One HbA1C per year?

I'm T1 and very well controlled, test BG regularly etc but I still only have one HbA1C a year for my diabetic check up. Just on insulin injections, not a pump. Is this the same for other T1's? My Accu-Chek meter gives me 7, 14, 30 and 90 day averages which correlate with my HbA1C result so...

    Hypo hallucinations

Luckily it's a long time ago but I've thought I was flying around the bedroom ceiling during a hypo, I can only imagine it's like a weird trip after taking drugs, never done it but you hear stories!

    Type 1 and Pregnancy

I became diabetic six months into my second pregnancy and the hospital kept warning me about big babies. I was very strict with my diet as well as being on insulin and baby was three weeks early at 5lbs 2 ozs. So, it can be done and I'm only 7 stone do a small baby was great. Good luck.

    Insulin out of the fridge

What I'd be worried about is your insulin being in a suitcase in the hold of the aircraft which can get very cold and that could damage your insulin. I travel a lot but use Frio wallets to keep my insulin in, in my carry on bag. Frio's just need a soak in cold water and they'll keep your...

Type 1: What are your HbA1c test results?

My last HbA1C was 42 which converts to 6.0, diabetic T1 for 40 years, good diet and exercise a lot, Pilates, some yoga and walking a lot, which knocks my BG down more than running does, hence the low result. Works for me and my Fitbit tells me I've walked the length of the Great Wall of China...

Newly diagnosed and worried about life expectancy

Ignore the losing 12 years of your life, if you can keep control of your BG's, eat well and keep exercising there's no reason you can't live a long and healthy life. I've been T1 for 40 years this Christmas, no complications but I work hard at me control and HbA1C is 42. I also exercise a lot...

    29, just diagnosed, feeling hopeless

Well done you, getting blood sugars under control will make you feel better and more positive, good to show other Newbies that life can go on and diabetes needn't be the end of anything.

If you were away from home without your hypo kit...

Chocolate works for me as does lucozade but that only has half the sugar now so you need more. Coca Cola is the only one that still has full sugar. Fizzy drinks get into your bloodstream faster.

    Growing fears over injections

I inject into my butt, there's a strip of muscle there and you don't feel the injection. Hang in there, it's part of your new life and it will get easier. I've been injecting for 40 years and I'm fit and healthy. Try to think positively, having T1 won't stop you doing most things you can...

Refused extra hand luggage for insulin and pump supplies

Do you have to fly Singapore Airlines? Try Quantas or other airlines, they may be more helpful. I love Quantas, they're brilliant. Good luck

Type 1: What are your HbA1c test results?

my HbA1C in June was 42 which converts to 6.0 which is similar to the averages on my Accu- Chek Aviva meter. I've been on insulin for 39 years now but I exercise a lot and eat sensibly. Seems to be working but it's never possible to switch off from it and exercising knocks my BG down so it's a...
