    DVLA Revoked My Driving Licence

I think you are only allowed to drive on an overseas licence for 1 year after coming to the country but I'm not sure if that is only if you haven't originally had a UK licence in the first place. I have also moved home in the last few months and have not attended an appointment with my new DSN...

    DVLA Revoked My Driving Licence

I have a general type question. My last UK licence expired in about 2010 and as I was living in NZ I obviously didn't bother trying to renew it .I came back to the country last summer and was driving on my NZ licence. However I was having some severe issues with night time hypos and I voluntary...

Has anyone here been a diabetic for more than 40 years?

Even though I consider myself to be a long termer already I have utmost respect for all the people posting here . I am a mere baby in comparison. To have lived as long as you have with this condition when medical science was not as advanced as it is now is simply inspirational. Hats off to you...

Has anyone here been a diabetic for more than 40 years?

Just out of interest how many of the 40 years + people have issues because of it? I am 31 years and counting now and apart from a bit of background retinopathy I am doing pretty well. However as I am still only 40 years old I have a long way to go and was wondering about the chances of things...

    Finger Pricking stabbings in School

No I'm afraid I have encountered way too much ignorance about the condition over the years even from my own close relatives .I just try and keep on with it every day and not make a fuss about it.

    Finger Pricking stabbings in School

I got in big trouble in the 1980's at school because some syringes had started to appear in the playground with needles still attached. As I was the only diabetic in the school I was hauled to the head of year and given a HUGE dressing down and threatened with expulsion. Trouble is it was...

What are your resting heart rates?

Just tested mine and got a 52. I've been T1 for 31 years but do consider myself to be reasonably fit as I cycle about 150 miles a week

Type 1s: What stupid things have people said to you?

That's actually very misleading and quite dangerous if not explained on the packet. I never eat diabetic foods but if I was going to eat something that said it had 100g of carbs in it for example I would inject 15 units of insulin and probably kill myself in the process.

    Diagnose stories and d days

Was 9 years old in January 1983. I think mine started coming on around November 1982 and I began to get colder and colder as the winter went on. I think this was due to me losing so much weight and body fat. When I was admitted to hospital on Jan 17th I weighed 3 1/2 stone. I began to notice...

    Low carb ideas

I don't really want to build muscle though. To be a good long distance cyclist it is important to keep weight off particularly on the upper body. Most road cyclists are skinny as rakes with large thighs.

    Unawareness and scared!

It is all they will tell you to do anyway (or the only advice I have ever been given). Maybe someone else may contribute something else you can try .Good luck!

    Unawareness and scared!

Hmm I don’t know the best thing to suggest here as normally hypo unawareness develops after having Type 1 for far longer. The only advice you will be given by your Health Care team is to run your levels higher for a few weeks and they will come back. However speaking as someone who has gone...

    Low carb ideas

I think physical exercise also plays a large role in what you consider to be low carb .I try and stay fairly low carb although not religiously) and normally have around 100 to 130g a day. However by most people's standards I am very active. I cycle a minimum of 110 miles a week through commuting...

Not a great start to the day

Hmm..turns out I was 3.0 at lunch and not high as I suspected. I obviously just feel rough from hypo after effects. This reading doesn't make any sense considering what has been going on but have dealt with that now so will test again in a few hours an hopefully by the time I get home tonight I...

Not a great start to the day

It's now 11.30 and I am going to test again shortly but suspect I am high as I am not feeling too good. My problem sometimes is that in the morning there is never a change in my routine with testing blood and eating the same etc. So in my confusion I just continued with the same routine without...

Not a great start to the day

Went to bed last night with BS of 11.something which is higher than I normally am. I took 1 additional unit but woke up this morning with BS of 2.7. Although sometimes I can function quite normally at this level I was definitely feeling very confused this morning. It doesn't help that my wife is...

    Today's appointment

Just ask if you can see someone else next time. In my experience they all tell you different things anyway. You will also find as the years go on they will change the position on what is good and what is acceptable and what is bad for you concerning Type 1. Meanwhile throughout all those years...

    Today's appointment

Oh dear God. These points sum up some of the many reasons that I try not to attend medical appointments and when I do I take most of it with a pinch of salt. F...wits.

How many test strips do you use a month?

Oh any enjoyment will soon wear off I can pretty much guarantee that! :)
