    Readings at diagnosis

I had a 29.2 which in the grand scheme of things isn't as high as others. But I was in a really bad way as I had been getting ill for several months before hand so it could have been in the twenties for weeks. I felt so ill that before diagnosis I didn't have the strength to walk up stairs, I...

Had to Come Off Pump After 7 Weeks

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me with this as I am having terrible problems with my pump infusion set. I went onto an Animas Vibe pump about 7 weeks and ago and was using the Inset II infusion sets. Straight away I could not get any control over my levels which were swinging around...

    Am I going mad?

Like Noblehead I have got background retinopathy and have had it for over 10 years and in all honesty it causes me absolutely no problems whatsoever. You do obviously have to be aware of the potential for it getting worse but as long as you try and keep your levels under control and attend your...

    Moving to New Zealand

Hi, I lived there for 4 years recently and I didn't have to pay for insulin etc (just a nominal prescription charge of a few dollars). However I had a permanent residence visa which is probably different if you have a work visa. If you have a permanent residence visa you can get your T1 stuff...

Does this happen to all Type 1's...?

Some of the ignorance is hard to imagine though. I have had a pump for about a month and have talked quite a lot to a very good friend of mine of the ups and downs I have been having. I said that it was quite weird being plugged in to a machine that keeps me alive. He went a bit quiet and looked...

    Pump

I think your quote is too simplistic. I have had T1 for over 30 years and am well aware of how carbs, insulin and exercise affect my body. By your definition as I have been struggling then I know nothing. It is a whole different way of treating the condition so initially problems will occur...

    Pump

Sorry my levels are set between 4 and 8 not 6 and 8. I have barely hit one yet.

    Pump

A lot of questions here. I think I may have fallen into a trap of trying too much too soon when things immediately went wrong however due to the severity of the hypos I had to take action. My basal rate is 0.675 and I am using novorapid. My levels are set between 6 and 8. I tried basal testing...

    Pump

I went on to the Animas Vibe pump last week and so far it has been a total nightmare for me. I was always susceptible to hypo's and although my Hba1c is great at 38 I do have numerous hypos. I was reluctant to try the pump but eventually got onto it after enquiring last year. So far there seems...

Type 1 Diabetes and Traveling the World

They are gel pouches that you just soak in water which activates the gel which keep them cool for a couple of days. You don't need a fridge which is the whole point of them. They are reusable. I had 4 of these when I did a 3 month trip in Central America back in 2009 and they are really good...

    raging sugars

And even before you get to see someone you need to increase your insulin by a few units as well immediately. These are very high readings and will only come down with more insulin. You are a long way from risking a hypo so just do it.

Type 1 Diabetes and Traveling the World

I have tried to get insulin posted from the Uk overseas but apparently that is not allowed. I think the only way would be to buy it but depending where you are it could prove problematic and very expensive. Maybe the best approach is to come back for a couple of weeks and sort something out here...

    Work

That is very good advice Erin

What do new doctors need to know about Type 1?

Not to forget about the mental difficulties. Many diabetics self harm, suffer from depression or experience burn out. It is certainly not just a physical condition.

    What are your hypo symptoms?

I get that doom feeling as well sometimes. It's a very odd one as it feels like the hope has been sucked out of you and the world has gone dark. Reminds me of Dementors in Harry Potter

    Work

These are all valid points. I have been T1 for 32 years and have hardly ever had time off for hypo's. I have even gone to work after being treated by paramedics after losing consciousness at night on more than 1 occasion. I am similar to Tim2000 in this regard as I try not to let it affect my...

    New diagnosis

One piece of advice I can give is try and live the diabetic life alongside your child for a week or two. Inject yourself when he does (not with insulin obviously), test blood when he does, write it in a book etc, take hypo treatment if he has too, change your diet if necessary etc, plan your day...

    Hypo's change over time?

Hmm this is a worry for me. I have my first appointment for going on a pump in a few weeks. TBH I know many people think they are great but I am not really looking forward to it that much. But I don't have great hypo awareness anyway so is there a chance that mine may become even worse?

So...what's the theories?, what causes type 1 in the first place?

I mentioned the number a T1 adults diagnosed earlier on. It really does seem more prevalent than 30 odd years ago. It would imply to me an environmental issue that maybe wasn't around until the1990's or 2000's. However I think there are a number of factors involved and not just one. All of the...

    diabulimia

Ok don't do this. Read some of the facts and you will find that most people who start doing this and continue for a period of time will severely damage their health (blindness, kidney failure etc) or kill themselves. You are playing with fire in a terrible way.
