    Low Carb Wobble........

Hi SparkJack I think many of us have wobbles from time to time. You seem to know what levels of carbs you can take. I say go with what works and kick the wobble to touch. Best wishes Ed

    Blood sugar control

Hi Brian I'd say it's worth experimenting with some extra carbohydrate before the swim. Test before and immediately after swimming each time to see how your son's levels are responding. Make any adjustments to the carb quantity as a result of the tests. Is this helpful at all? Ed

    Cortisone Tablets and Injections

Hi Bob Cortisone can affect blood sugar. See disadvantages listed here: http://www.medicinenet.com/cortisone_injection/page2.htm And for a more impassioned analysis, here's Jenny Ruhl's take on things http://diabetesupdate.blogspot.com/2007/09/beware-cortisone.html You wouldn't want readings...

Can Novomix 30 and Novo Rapid be taken together?

Hi jnathan Can I assume your mum has quite a bit of carbohydrate in her diet? There's often two ways of looking at things. Either more insulin can be taken, or less carbohydrate eaten. Personally, I'd go for the second option. If a shorter acting insulin needs to be taken, the advice needs...

    Moving the goalposts

I think there's some logic in that. I find that I get I feel the symptoms of high and low sugar levels at not so high and low levels that I used to. Before, when my control was pretty haywire, I wouldn't know where my levels were regardless of whether they were very high or sometimes very low...

TYPE 2 DIABETES 600 CALORIE DIET REPORT

That's great to hear guitarhero The coldness can happen when on a calorie deficit. It's good you've got your doctor and dietitians backing as well on this. Look forward to hearing more Ed

    HIGH B/S

Hi Jackie, just a small first note: the caps makes it a touch harder to read what you're saying Are you confident with adjusting your insulin doses? I say this as to jump to a no carb (or almost no carb) diet could see you having a greater risk of hypos. I would generally say it's better to...

    pain in foot

Hi Elvis Do you always test your levels at the same time or do you try testing at other times as well? One technique that a number of us use is to test before a meal and then 2 hours and 4 hours after as this can show a useful profile of how your levels are responding to meals. If you have a...

    DEPRESSION

Hi Martina You're sure not alone. Alicia, who's also posted today seems to be in a similar position. http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes-forum/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=26453 I've answered Alicia and I think some of what I've said may be useful to have a read of for you too. Ed

    New to Forum

Hi Alicia A few years ago I was in a similar position. I was testing my sugars and perhaps wasn't depressed but was struggling with control which allowed my mood to swing a fair bit. Type 1 as well. My story is that this forum helped me. I'd seen people keep saying how lowering carbs could...

    Reversing Diabetes diet

There are a lot of diet books that have big claims. Personally, my feeling is that if you, or in this case your husband, can stick closely to the diet it's likely to make inroads into better health. The book that turned things round for me, personally, was Dr Bernstein's book. I don't follow...

    confused

Hi Sue The way diabetes is categorised is that you can be categorised as having glucose intolerance (pre-diabetic) or as having type 2 diabetes. What you will probably need to face is that you will need to find out about diabetes at this stage and look to make some lifestyle changes. The...

Can background Retinopathy reverse in 5 weeks?

If the initial retinopathy exam was the one where they take a photograph of the back of the eye -this should be more exact in theory. As long as you keep your levels in good control, I think that's the main thing.

Quick question on the nature of cholesterol tests

I think these are snapshots -but I could be proved wrong. I know that main reason they ask for cholesterol tests to be fasting is that triglyceride levels tend to rise after meals. I think with the trigs it is more like a finger prick test than A1c. I think with LDL and HDL, they are...

    Extreme diabetes management

This seems to be about the ACCORD study which was a bit dodgy because a lot of people were on Avandia. If you're getting an HbA1c below 7, keep doing what you're doing. Janet Ruhl gives a run down here which is worth a read...

    typs of insulin

Hi Edith, welcome to the forum :) There are several different types of insulin: Long acting: eg Levemir & Lantus (18-24 hrs) Intermediate acting: eg NPH insulin (12-14 hrs) Short acting: eg Humulin S (4-6 hrs or so) Rapid acting: eg Humalog (0-4 hrs) Mixed insulins: these are a mixture of...

    Diet

Hi Sean I see the issue you have. You need to avoid hypos at any cost, but in other ways the carb-heavy meals may be partly responsible for pushing up the blood sugar levels. I see some of the things you're eating probably won't help too much with the weight. I'd find a way to straight cut out...

So are we allowed to give blood?

good points :) I know that with hypoglycemia, it's only really been recently that the NHS have realised just how common hypos can be for people on tablets (like sulfonylureas).
