Is there a Stigma attached to your diabetes ? What is your experience.

I read somewhere – probably it was a USA site called DiaTribe – that T1s actually tend to feel more stigma because their treatment is more visible and likely to attract a lot of undesired attention. I quite agree with such a view. I would be glad to test and inject in public but I am often asked...

    Language translation for diabetes

I am Italian and I'm sorry , Ken, but no one in Italy would understand the sentence you proposed. The correct Italian version would be: «Sono diabetico insulino-dipendente. La prego mi aiuti, ho urgente bisogno di zucchero.» Or else: «Ho il diabete di tipo uno. La prego mi aiuti, ho urgente...

Any one else have a GP like this?

OF COURSE a T1 has had hypos before, provided he/she has been living with the condition for more than a few months! Good grief, what a nyncompoop that GP is!

A colleague at work revealing my diabetes

I'm not sure about cz-dave, but as far as I am concerned, the problem would be not being allowed to decide by MYSELF whether to tell about my condition or not. I think people should not take such liberties. It's a patronizing attitude I couldn't stand. But of course, as you said, we are all...

    Forgetting if I took insulin?

Hi Chloesnavy, I have the same problem, I often can't remember whether I took insulin or not. Timesulin is a good tool, I guess it can help avoid injecting twice instead of once. As for the opposite (not taking insulin at all because you simply forgot), I have a makeshift method: I put my...

    Morning lows?

I have had morning hypos nearly every morning for 30 years and still have, no matter what kind (Lantus, Tresiba… you name it) or what dose of slow-acting insulin I use. You could ask your doctor what can be done. My endos were never of much use, that's true, but perhaps yours are more proactive...

explaining what it's really like to live with Type 1

Cracking post, pal! You quoted a doctor defining T1 diabetes as a slow death; that reminds me of a booklet I was given to read when first diagnosed (I was around 20). It said that T1s could live a next-to-normal life, though «not a happy one, of course»… I stopped short, threw the book out of...

Type 1: Newly diagnosed, any advice?

Dear Charlotte 2580, I was diagnosed about your age (only, it was some 30 years ago) and as you have 2 brothers living with the same condition I'd like to add a specific piece of advice to the very sensible and clever ones given by other forum members. When I was diagnosed, my sister had been...

If you could warn us when you are going to have a hypo it would be appreciated....

I agree with Zand: the worst kind of ignorance is that of people who think they already know.

    Waist Measurement And Visceral Fat

Hi Little Grey Cat (what a cute nickname, by the way) I am Type 1 and I always have my waist measured when I meet my endo (some 4 times a year). I only wonder what use it can be, as the nurse never seem to put her tape round the same place of me: sometimes it's my actual waist (I take it to be...

    Tresiba insulin

Hi Martina, I have been using Tresiba for some two years now and I think it works wonderfully: fewer (almost none) night hypos and it helps balance overall BG much better. I am aware that things can be different for someone else (I am much older than you daughter and certainly lead a different...

    Hello from Turin

Thank you very much, MikeTurin! I see they are mostly about T2, which is reasonably your focus; they'll be useful to help me learn something more about T2, though the focus for my project is T1 (being somewhat of a rarer condition, it is also under-represented in literature). As I expected, the...

    Hello from Turin

Dear MikeTurin, too bad that your GP wasn't more proactive, you certainly did very well to change! And sorry if I gave you the impression of trying to lecture you or of being a snappy 'know-it-all': I really didn't mean it, it's just that I'm often way too blunt when expressing my views...

    Hello from Turin

Hello Mike, I am from Turin as well and I have been type 1 for some thirty years now (got diagnosed at 20, now I am 52). Welcome to the forum and first of all let me congratulate you on your weight loss, 17 kg is a great achievement, so: be proud! As for the new mayor, well… personally I don't...

What do you miss most from being diabetic

Spontaneity certainly comes first, as for Noblehead and others have pointed out so well. But also not having to tell, re-tell, inform and explain about T1 every single people around me… I have no patience and the quick-on-the-uptakes are soooo few! Then the zero risk of making myself...

Does the heat make you feel ill

First: I loathe the heath (AND I live in a very warm country, which doesn't help). Problems with insulin storage both at home and when travelling, multiple hypos every day, swelling ankles, much too low blood pressure, no sleep for a two-month spell (people stay up later and make noise in the...

    What age were you diagnosed?

Diagnosed age 20, now 52. What's the purpose of your question, though, if I may ask?

    Fed up

I feel like that a lot when on holiday or when I am very busy or physically tired and looking for relief, but I also find that it definitely gets better with time: it becomes more of a routine. Like brushing your teeth, shaving or doing the washing, which is no fun either, if you stop to consider.
