    100 years old

I'm type 1 / f*****d pancreas after an episode of acute severe pancreatitis. I'm 40 and do a lot of sport, keep weight down, have quite good control, but really have no idea of how diabetes will affect my lifespan.

    scared to drink!

I'm type 1, drink and seem to be ok with it unless I drink spirits. Ttry and snack on some carbs, or have some carbs before you go to sleep to be on the safe side.

    Blood Sugar Goals

5-7mmol is my aim, but for some reason my BG will never come down much within 2hrs of a meal, my HBA1C is ok though. Regularly screw up though and have double figures in the morning.

i have just been diagnosed and i am feeling very, very down, confused, scared, lost and in a dark pl

Unfortunately you pretty much have to educate yourself. Read 'Think Like A Pancreas' and get a carbs and calls books, and away you go. It's a learning curve, but less than 2yrs in I've got a pretty good grasp, and doing a lot of exercise.

    Really Stupid Quesstion about Exercise!

The effect of exercise on BG depends mainly on the level of insulin in your body. As a type 1 if I exercise just before I'm about to take my daily basal then I don't really need to fuel the exercise with carbs. If I have a 'normal' level of insulin I need to fuel my exercise to the tune of 50g...

    JRDF

Cheers Guys, good to get confirmation. I'm only just coming to terms with life as a T1 after 18 months, slow, starter but want o know and contribute more.

    Bananas

It sounds like I have less than you, maybe 3-4 a week. A balanced diet for me includes fruit although it has sugar, I'm not too concerned about the glucose in fruit, as a type 1 as long as my diet is good, and I balance my glucose intake with insulin it's not an issue.

    Bananas

I tend to eat them before exercise, I need about 50-60g of carbs an hour for cardio, so try to take some of that carb as a fruit that will give me some vitamins & nutrients rather than just taking a sports drink or gel.

    Sorry....another splitting levemir question

I don't split mine, I take it at midday, but take my BG in the morning and take a little NovaRapid to tide me to midday.

    Heat lowering blood sugars?

I was out in Brazil for nearly a month recently, spent a lot of that time in hot climates, I had to reduce my insulin, both basal and bolus by about a third. Hypos for the first few days until i figured it out.

    JRDF

I stumbled across JRDF on the web, and I see very few references to it on here. I was thinking of going to one of their Discovery Days, has anyone here been to one, have thoughts or opinions on how good they are?

How do you feel when high?

This if through food. Have run very high on stress hormones though, 20+ based solely on that having had basal and no food but bg >20mmol.

    Cycling T1 ...

Thanks for that, great to get that advice, much appreciated. I'll keep experimenting.

    Cycling T1 ...

Yeah, loads of things, my bg drop after exercise can vary a lot after the few rides I've done since diagnosis. Also, if I'm on normal levemir levels and do a 30min cardio + weights at the gym can result in massive drops in BG . As I can't always predict when I exercise I can't lower my basal...

Does type 1 happen with obesity?

    LOL this thread.

    Cycling T1 ...

We are all so different, I have just got back into cycling after being diagnosed as T1, and on Levemir and NR. I'm up to 40 miles at the mo, but don't take any NR with the banana at the start of my ride, and need to take on about 60-70g of carbs per hour whilst cycling. After 2hrs cycling on...

    Carbs before exercise

It really depends on what that sort of exercise does to your BG, have you done a before and after check? Lifting weights doesn't affect my bg, cycling drops it massively, easily 8-10 mmol an hour, and snowboarding raises it, presumably due to adrenalin. It's really an individual thing, other...

£25 for doctors letter to allow Insulin on Plane.

In my 18 months carrying insulin I've never been asked for any docs relating to insulin. I've always carried insulin pens without the needles in my hand luggage, and the needles separately in my hand luggage. I've never even been asked about them, and that is in about 40 flights during that...

    Newly diagnosed type 1

You'll get a lot of great advice on here. I'm T1 and always been slim for nearly 40 years, so hit me hard too, all I can say on the injections and insulin regime is that it gets easier to manage, and easier to understand. I recommend some books such as Carbs & Cals, and Think Like a Pancreas...
