    Newly diagnosed type 1

I was diagnosed as type 1 18 moths ago aged 38, a real shocker. I had lost 2 stone in about a year, and it was a bit of a relief to find out what was wrong with me as I felt like ****. 18 months in and I have pretty good management, and I'm now getting back into cycling and exercise which was...

    Tramadol feedback please

I took quite a high dose to deal with very painful neuropathy to enable me to sleep. It made me feel like **** the next day, and I found it very difficult to do a full on day at work afterwards.

    Honeymoon Period Ending?

After nearly 18 months post diagnosis my Levemir and Novarapid have nearly doubled, but I'm prone to hypos as BG is just not predictable. I've gone from 15 to 30 units Levemir a day, and have increased Novarapid by about 70%, but also have more corrective doses on a regular basis. It's been a...

    Alcohol and evening meal

My BG definitely lowers significantly through alcohol, I've had a few BBQ's in the last year with friends around and I've only taken my Levemir as the alcohol has levelled out the carbs. I'm now coming/have come off my honeymoon period so will have to watch this.

What are some of the best ways to tell people you're diabetic?

It's a difficult one as there re so many preconceptions, my work are great, and will try to accommodate me, for a big team meeting last week I was asked by my bosses PA what I wanted as a snack as "I can't eat biscuits", reality is I can eat what I want as long as I balance my insulin, however...

    Levemir - lumps :(

When I was first diagnosed I used to inject Levemir just into my stomach on one side, and it ended up being noticeably bigger than the other side. I rotate injection sites from legs, to buttocks, on each side for Levemir, and this seems to have stopped the problem.

How old were you when you first diagnosed with type 1?? And how long do you have it??

There are a lot more folks diagnosed as type 1 later in life than I would have thought. All I get is your old (diagnosed aged 38) for type 1.

    trying to stay calm

My last HBA1C was 40, so seems consistent, but my day to day readings do vary a hell of a lot. I've had >20 readings purely from stress hormones in a particularly taxing and stressful work situations. In these couple of situations I was under immense stress, out of my comfort zone, and hadn't...

    trying to stay calm

I wish I could get near that, two hours after a meal mine are still double digit, seems to take 3-4 to come down. I don't feel like my control is very good but my latest HBA1C was 37.

Driving licence for type 1 - how long did it take you to obtain one?

Mine took a few weeks, but I was trading in a regular UK license for a diabatic one.

Type 1 rules we accidentally break :/

Ah get you. I'm usually relatively conservative with my correction doses. I've really suffered when I've taken a corrective dose mid morning, then more rapid acting with lunch + levemir, and then boom mid afternoon I'm screwed.

Type 1 rules we accidentally break :/

What is bolus rage? I never store insulin in the fridge. I always leave the needle in the pen, and put a new needle in before I will use it. I don't usually record my readings. Only change the lancet every 3 days or so. Out of contact with my official care team as an outpatient from hospital...

Got mine this morning, 37 down from 60 in March 2013.

    Random Highs

Don't underestimate stress. I've had readings of 20+ after no food (Idon't eat breakfast) mid morning when in an extremely stressful work situation. Normal insulin intake from Levermir, and NovoRapid with my last meal the evening before.

    Type 1 Diabetic, Exercising?

I found the following useful information, explained in an easy to understand way. The guys says he needs about 60g of carbs per hour, I need about 45-50. So say I ate a banana at the start that was say 30 grams, and the rest in glucose tabs during the exercise. If I do more than an hour I'll...

    Blood Glucose

My bolus has also increased by similar amounts. I was using a relatively low amount of insulin according to the docs. I'm going to track it more closely going forward, and increase the amount of exercise I'm doing.

    Blood Glucose

Mine are all over the place at the moment. Have increased my basal by >50% in the last 6 months, think I'm coming to the end of my honeymoon period. Also mine never recover within 2hrs of a meal, 3-4 more likely. Thinking low carb is the way forward although I'm not overweight.

    Shocking ¬!

It's poor to get this level of support, I certainly believe I deserve better, to some extent it's been sink or swim. Luckily swim in my case, I think I'm managing things ok, but don't have a level of finesse I'd like. I will probably learn far more on here than I ever will from the NHS.

    Shocking ¬!

I've never been given any dietary advice, just some elementary carb counting advice. As a type 1 I'm managed as an outpatient from hospital, but being sent a letter in Jan telling me my next appointment is in July doesn't give me a warm feeling that I'm being looked after.
