Does Insulin make you gain weight?

It has for me, after gaining back the weight I'd lost whilst being undiagnosed I've gone on to be the heaviest I've ever been in my life, despite no negative change in diet or lifestyle. Up until age 36 max weight was 14st, got T1, diagnosed aged 38 11.5st, now aged 40 15st. Still hitting the...

I'm confused about what to do when I'm on the beer, Inject ? don't inject?

If it's a long session, say an all day BBQ well into the evening, I won't take any bolus and just eat some carbs, say burger bread, to balance the alcohol. Last night we went and stayed with friends, went out for a meal, kept the basal the same, I had no bolus, but ate a portion of sautéed...

Am I a cynic? Strained Gp relationship

As a T1 I was told at first I needed to be treated as an outpatient from the hospital/health authority. I last saw a consultant in Nov 2013, we have both rescheduled 1 each to be fair. My GP practice has started to invite me to diabetes clinics, but I have no desire to attend, my HBA1C is...

    Anyone work for aldi?

I have a mate who was a store manager for them a few years ago, ridiculous hours, and in the dark ages in terms of how they treat their staff apparently. That was a few years ago though, when they were quite a bit smaller in the UK.

Nerve damage help - follow on

I feel for you, I was scared at one point I wouldn't be able to work properly again, such was the pain, and the inability to sleep properly. Chronic pain just grinds you down, so glad you found something to help. I'm sure it will get better, my thoughts are with you.

Nerve damage help - follow on

That's what I experienced, I could hardly walk for several months due to the pain in my feet, I had to wear trainers to work in the office. Thankfully it was temporary, and back to normal now.

Nerve damage help - follow on

My BG was >40 MMOL when I was diagnosed, and apparently had been high for a very long time, a couple of years. The explanation my consultant gave as I had no nerve pain prior to diagniosis, was that the pain was down to a massive adjustment in BG in bringing it into control, which affected my...

Nerve damage help - follow on

I had massive nerve pain when I was first diagnosed, after lowering my BG levels for a prolonged period I no longer have nerve pain. I hated Amitryptline, and Gabapentin was useless (another antidepressant). At the time the only relief I got was using Tramadol hydrochloride. You need to get...

I'm trying to come up with a list of tips and tricks for t1 diabetics. Came up with 7. Any ideas?

The general principal that doing cardio exercise when your basal is tailing off stands, that applies to all T1's, you require less fuelling, it's science. This isn't my own thinking but advice from a diabetic nutritionist, sure you know better though, I'll back out from this thread.

I'm trying to come up with a list of tips and tricks for t1 diabetics. Came up with 7. Any ideas?

Exercise just before your basal (if once a day) to avoid the need to fuel or reduce it for the exercise

    Worst place....

Worst was after too many beers watching the football in brazil this summer, had to walk several miles to and from the match, mixed with the alcohol plunged me into a hypo 1.9 when we got back to the hotel. Had to leave the hotel shortly after to catch a flight and forgot to take my insulin from...

Type 1 Diabetes and Traveling the World

Hi Carly, sounds like a great adventure. I think they are more lax in South America about giving out insulin. I left my entire stash in a hotel fridge in Manaus(Brazil) last year and still had 2 weeks of my trip left. My wife's cousin was able to get some for me, I thought it was just a local...

    Bread

Can someone educate me as to why I need to low carb as a T1? I take insulin on the basis of how many grams of carbs I eat, what I read on here makes me think I am doing something wrong.

    GP being an a**e.

No, my BG is relatively predictable, so if in the normal routine I just don't feel the need to, often don't test even five times a day when not going to the gym or exercising. I Test on waking, before lunch, pre gym, post gym, bedtime. If doing exercise longer than an hour I'll test every half...

    GP being an a**e.

I had to ask for an increase to 100 test strips per prescription from 50, I probably on use 5 a day though.

    Dawn phenomenon

Out of interest have you always taken that amount of levemir? Curious as I take much less, but have only been diagnosed as diabetic/T1 for 26 months.
