    Is T1 diabetes preventable?

Over the last 5 months with very little carb intake and weight change my BG levels have been very much constant (my average pre breakfast BG readings have been under 5 and my average 2hr after meal testings have been under 6). Since diagnosis a year ago, and until the last 5 months, I was...

    Is T1 diabetes preventable?

Thanks Phoenix, An interesting report, but it also raises more 'time process' questions, which I guess can only be answered with more trials. Eg 1). What were the patients BG levels when they went on insulin as this would effect the time process?... I guess this could be anything between 7 and...

    Is T1 diabetes preventable?

I can relate to this completely. And thanks for the very informative info and chart. My point being, in my very short experience, once BG levels are low (normal) beta cells do not seem to degenerate any further. Thus if one had low (normal) BG levels, beta cells would not degenerate, and it is...

    Is T1 diabetes preventable?

Mr consultant said I was LADA (through a GAD test) in dec 2013. My nurse, reading through my hospital notes a few months back said I was T1 in the honeymoon period, no mention of LADA on my medical record at all!!! NHS / Drs in the UK seem to have two categories only T1 and T2. But I agree...

    Is T1 diabetes preventable?

I don't think I am unique, Dr Bernstein has many, maybe hundreds or thousands of patients like myself. Some forecasters believe that around 10% of T2s are LADA, this means there could be more LADA's than T1s. I don't understand. I am not saying you are wrong, just don't understand. I am sure I...

    Is T1 diabetes preventable?

I agree..... But since I have been able to maintain normal BG levels (under 5 before breakfast and under 6 2hrs after eating) I can not detect any further deterioration of my beta cells, which kind of says to me that my beta cells destruct with high blood sugar levels and that keeping low BG...

    Is T1 diabetes preventable?

I was diagnosed T2 in sept 2013, then T1 in December 2013 through a GAD test, which was very high (+2,000). I am still diabetic, nothing reversed. If I eat a few too many carbs my BG levels shoot up very fast. Could it not be the case that autoimmune is brought on by high blood sugars?. I guess...

    Is T1 diabetes preventable?

They could well be still degenerating, but I can not detect any degeneration over the last 5 months (since my BG sugars have been at normal levels). They are certainly worse than they were a year ago, and I could clearly see them getting worse, until my BG levels were normalised....... Time will...

    Is T1 diabetes preventable?

Everyone says it is is not. My diabeetes consultant Dr said there was nothing you could have done to prevent it... It just happens. But.... My experience over the last few months makes me think differently. In that I am 100% sure that if I had been on a LCHF diet 2 years ago I would not be...

Can I prove the Dr's wrong?

Another month and no change in my average BG meter reading and my weight is stable. Pre breakfast levels are averaging just below 5 and 2hr after eating averaging just over 5. Now 5 months of very consistently normal BG levels. Dr Bernstein's solution is definitely working for me, for now. I...

Fairly low to me is around 100g per day (I am on 36g). I think NHS guideline is around 250g. If you cut out all potatoes, all bread, all rice and all pasta you would probably be around 100g per day.

    Fats and-or carbs

If you ditched ALL carbs, you could eat meat and fish plus veg oils and butter. Most hard cheese and eggs have just a trace. I am very low carb (12g per meal). I don't think I could (would want to) go any lower. It is recorded that the Eskimo / Inuits consumed no carbs (just ate meat and fish)...

    Which type?

You can still be LADA when on insulin. When LADA you have some remaining insulin making beta cells, but have lost most.

    LADAs preserving their beta cells

Hi Lucy, I think I would be looking at a little more insulin, especially if you are confident you are some way off of hypos.

    Which type?

LADA's (T1.5) still have some beta cells producing insulin. There is much evidence that shows beta cells destruct only with high blood sugar levels (above around 5.6) and that LADA's can keep their remaining beta cells, maybe indefinitely, if they can keep low sugar levels. I am LADA. For the...

    Doctor soon.

You certainly could go lower carb, and this likely will lower your blood sugar levels. Maybe worth a try. Granola, pasta (even wholemeal) and tomato sauces all have highish carbs. To go lower carb would mean no bread, no pasta, no rice, no potatoes, virtually no readymade sauces (Mayo is ok /...

    Fats and-or carbs

I started low carbing around 8 months ago, with around 100g of carbs per day. Eating to my meter (testing before and after each meal) and I soon found that lowering carbs even further reduced my blood sugar levels. I have now been very low carb (36g per day) for around 6 months now. I don't...

    Doctor soon.

Hi everyloud, I assume you are LADA. If so and you have bg levels above 10, I think you have two choices. 1) ask for insulin or 2) go very low carb As bluetit says, if you give us an example of your daily food intake we may be able to advise if you can reduce carbs further. If you ask your Dr...
