Newly Diagnosed - trying to process the news

You are finding your own way already. The blood glucose monitor will help so much. So many people are overweight nowadays. When I look around in my hometown I feel so sad. Many children are overweight too. They will think this is normal. If you watch old footage of times gone by most are slim...

Newly Diagnosed - trying to process the news

My blood glucose monitor was one of my best investments ever. I kept a food diary with all the results and it soon became apparent what my body was struggling with. I have cauliflower rice. Spice it up when I feel like (jalapeño usually) it but usually just have it as is. Mixed in with my curry...

Newly Diagnosed - trying to process the news

I used a blood glucose monitor to see which foods spiked me and which kept my blood sugars raised for an extended period of time. I adjust portion size or eliminated accordingly. I avoid potatoes, bread (unless very low carb) as they spike me. Rice and pasta as bs took hours to come back down...

    Testing for spikes

If I try something new I test after 1, 2 and 3 hours. A CGM which monitors your blood sugar levels 24/7 gives a much better picture. You may be lucky and get one from your Dr. I self fund and pay around £48. It's called a libre sensor and the sensor only lasts 14 days but even wearing one will...

Newly Diagnosed - trying to process the news

Hi Krishen and welcome I was in the same situation as you. Diagnosed t2 diabetic and prescribed metformin, statins and borderline blood pressure meds. I didn't want to go down that road unless necessary so did a bit of research. Diagnosed t2 almost 5 years ago and have dealt with it with diet...

    Positive progress

Great news Alan. I absolutely love having a coffee (or tea) out and about. I avoid milky coffees as they do turn to a lot of carbs. I go for a coffee with cream or a pot of tea - I don't like milky tea so just a dash does me. A dash of cream instead is even better carb wise. You may find this...

    Feeling lost

A very worrying time for you I was diagnosed in December 2017 with a hba1c of 62. By making dietary changes (I declined meds) I soon got into the 30s where I've been ever since. Blood glucose monitoring will help enormously. [Mod edit to align with forum rules.]

Hi Jo and welcome to the forum. You've come to the right place. Lots of good clear info here. It is so confusing isn't it :-( But I can see youve already been given a lot of useful information on blood glucose monitoring and the low carb way of eating which works for so many of us. I felt...

    Newly diagnosed.

You will definitely benefit from lots of testing of blood sugars to start with (attached will help guide you). I try to keep between 30g and 50g carbs a day. That keeps my blood sugar levels at a good level. As I said previously, we ARE all different so see how you get on with testing. You...

    Newly diagnosed.

Hi Catrin and welcome to the forum. You are only just in the diabetic range (anything over 47 - see attached). A few small but significant changes and you could very well pull this back. You've already made a fantastic start. Well done. Your fasting blood sugar of 4.8 is very good indeed. The...
