Testing strips petition and Diabetes UK policy

If everyone who asked for strips was given them on prescription, there'd be no market for cheap ex-perscription strips on ebay in the first place! Mat

    First HBA1C result

Well as long as the meter is consistent then it's not so much a problem I guess really we are more interested in the difference between the before and after meal figures than the absolute value of one test. Mat

Who has had depression due to low carbing?

Quiet the opposite, I'm loving my low carb diet - steak and eggs for breakfast:) yum yum!!!! Always have leant more the the carnivorous side and now any lingering doubts that I was eating too much red meat have been banished!! Mat

    First HBA1C result

That looks OK then, I've been testing myself for 3 weeks now, and my meter is showing an average of 6.6 for the last 3 weeks, so I was a little concerned with the HBA1C as I've seen a few other posts suggesting that the meter I have "SD CODEFREE" might not be accurate!! Mat

    First HBA1C result

Just got my first HBA1C result since diagnosis and going on Metformin. - 64, or 8% in the old system according to the convertor! This result is 6 weeks after diagnosis, and starting Metformin, is this OK for this stage ? Can't get an appointment with my nurse until the middle of next...

    Pasta Confusion

Switching to wholemeal pasta might also help, also I've read, but not actually tested that eating it "al dente" rather than well done, and choosing thicker pastas such as Conchiglie as opposed to "thin" pasta like spaghetti will help avoid spikes as it takes longer to digest. Mat

Food (Fruit & Vegetables) & Diet drinks for Diabetics

Does your book give a reason for avoiding diet drinks? I'm getting through quite a lot of them with no apparent effect on BG levels! Mat

Food (Fruit & Vegetables) & Diet drinks for Diabetics

I've been drinking diet coke and lemonade as well as "No Added Sugar" squash, mainly the "hi-Juice" types and haven't noticed any spikes in the BG levels As to fruit and veg - theres a good guide to the relative carb levels in them here http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/whatto ... tfruit.htm...

    SD Codefree meter

Re: SD Code free metre I have one of these, and have only had one result that made me re-test, and I think that was my fault - not drying my hands properly and so testing a diluted sample! The only concern I have is that the strips only seem to be stocked by one company, and so if they stop...

    Good Experience with Metformin?

I've been on Metformin for 6 weeks now, also ramped up to full dose of 4x500mg per day quicker than most people do. the first couple of weeks weren't much fun, but it's OK now, apart from the occasional reminder if I eat something that I shouldn't have done :) Mat

Why do we test 2 hours after meals ?

I think I better order a lot more test strips!!!!! Mat

Why do we test 2 hours after meals ?

I know they are probably not the best thing to test, I was kind of seeing how far I could push things and get away with it :) Just a little concerned now that some of the other stuff that's slightly dodgy that I've tested and seemed OK at two hours might be spiking me earlier that I've not...

Why do we test 2 hours after meals ?

Just wondering why we test 2 hours after eating - did a set of tests today that have somewhat shocked me! I have been allowing myself an occasional small bag of maltesers as a treat - after all the first couple of times I tested after eating them the 2 hour test looked fine - well under 7 both...

    Net Carbs?

I came accross the same net carbs thing and started googling when I saw it on the wrapper for an Atkins Advantage chocolate bar. having tested myself after eating one I've got to say that it had a lot more effect on my BG than I would have expected for 2g of "net" carbs Mat

    Net Carbs?

I've been doing a little reading on this - The theory is that certain sweeteners - the polyols or sugar alchohols taste and cook like sugar, but are not digested and absorbed like normal sugar. Hence the carbs are in there, but shouldn't affect your BG levels. If you do some goggling and...

    Easter

I've found a small amount of Malteasers or a malt-easter bunny doesn't upset my BG meter too much :D Mat

    Pooter hygiene help please

PC world is the last place I'd take a PC that needed any work . . . . . FWIW I'm a cisco certified network engineer, and I clean out my PCs as most people say above - take the side off and stick the smallest attachment on a hoover in. Pay special attention to the fans and cooling vents Mat

    Chinese Takeaway

Hmmm Not so sure I did "get away" with it now, had my highest fasting BG level this morning since I started monitoring! this morning I was 7.7, usually I am 6.0 to 6.5 on waking. Can I put this down to the takeaway ???? does it work like that?? Mat

    Chinese Takeaway

Well I had Chicken with beanshoots in soy sauce, along with a much smaller amount of mushroom fried rice and chow mein than I'd previously have had  Seem to have just about got away with it too, BG before dinner 6.3, 1 hour after 8.2, 2 hours after 7.2. So I reckon I can get away...
