Artificial sweeteners are they all bad?

I don't take a statin although was offered one. I do take meds for high blood pressure, Losartan, and I don't think that is affected by grapefruit. I know some are though. I do actually, an awful lot, especially during the summer when it is in season, we have a large garden and grow plenty of...

Artificial sweeteners are they all bad?

You're probably right, I am eating more carbs than I realise. My son aged 50 also had an HbA1c of 44 but reduced that to 38 by following a low carb diet. He has hypothyroidism and was overweight [not obese I should add]. In the same period mine stayed exactly the same and I wasn't on a weight...

Artificial sweeteners are they all bad?

I might try ditching the grapefruit, in the short term at least to see if berries make any difference. I've used Canderel and similar products in powder form ever since the 80's too, when they were first introduced. Prior to that artificial sweeteners were saccharine based I think, they had a...

Artificial sweeteners are they all bad?

I have used artificial sweeteners for years now, ever since they became widely available, sprinkling them on my breakfast grapefruit quite generously and although I have often read warnings against them, I have largely ignored them as I don't like the taste, especially of Stevia/Truvia. That was...

I have high blood pressure and my dr wants me to take a statin. HbA1c is 41%.

That is so true. The meds set themselves up as Gods and expect us mere mortals to believe what they say without question. I have become such a sceptic since I realised that the NHS guidelines on the 'healthy eating plate' were so way off the mark. It has made me not want to believe at face...

I have high blood pressure and my dr wants me to take a statin. HbA1c is 41%.

H Hmmn .... I've just replied to you John and have somehow deleted it! Yes, I'm inclined to believe that statement too, it's just that since my other dr left I have to contend with one of those "Do as you are told, we know what is good for you" types now. However as I consider myself in good...

I have high blood pressure and my dr wants me to take a statin. HbA1c is 41%.

I tend to believe that too, it's just resisting the dr's bullying that can be so hard. Sometimes I think they get a bonus for every patient they manage to persuade onto a statin.

I have high blood pressure and my dr wants me to take a statin. HbA1c is 41%.

I can actually access my med notes online so know that a year ago my cholesterol was Total 6.6 which I thought rather high but the GP at the time was OK with that as the HDL was 2.8. ration was 2.4 and non HDL ch was 3.8. ratio 2.4 What incidentley is non NHD ch? Is this LDL? I was still offered...

I have high blood pressure and my dr wants me to take a statin. HbA1c is 41%.

I take Losartan for blood pressure and have done so for 3.5 years, it's just that when I go for the 6 month review they do these risk assessments [Qrisk] and the powers that be [NICE] say anyone over 10% should be on a statin. They reduced the figure from 20% about a year ago. Trouble is the...

I have high blood pressure and my dr wants me to take a statin. HbA1c is 41%.

Yes I do realise that nobody can force me to take them and so far I've resisted after the bad press they get, but then the dr throws the Qrisk figure at me and that makes me unsure. I did ask the dr a year ago if she would take them given my risk and she said no. However she has left now and the...

I have high blood pressure and my dr wants me to take a statin. HbA1c is 41%.

I am 74 and am on 50mg Losartan, my BP fluctuates somewhat but is normally in the region of <125/80> but does often spike closer to 140 systolic. I am not diabetic but am afraid I could become so if I were to take a statin. I am shortly due for a 6 month BP review with the dr and know I will...

    diabetic register query

I read on the forum about someone who reduced their HbA1c from 58 to 38 in 3 months and they were told that if in another 3 months they could reduce it to 32 they would be taken off the register. My question is this: I am not diabetic but 3 years ago had a health check and was found to have...

Hooray - my HbA1c has dropped from prediabetic levels to 39 mmol !

Thanks everyone. It certainly was a relief as a previous dr had said the numbers would definitely rise and I'd be on metformin soon. Diet apart, maybe the walking I have to do with the dog every day has helped get those numbers down. I now have to keep them down. Bluetit: the lipid/cholesterol...

Hooray - my HbA1c has dropped from prediabetic levels to 39 mmol !

I have recently had an HbA1c test and cholesterol test done as routine thanks to a sharp rise in Hypertension. Although my cholesterol has risen quite sharply my HbA1c has dropped from 42mmol to 39 mmol! Think that the dr will not be happy about the cholesterol rise which may well be due to the...

Anyone got worse luck with health than me?

Awful as that is at least you survived thanks to the good old NHS. Better health in the future. I've been lucky so far, but my younger stepbrother was far less lucky. He lost his mother when he was 3 months old to a brain tumour, his father to a heart attack when he was 5 years old [his...

Almost 2 years ago I had an HbA1c of 41mmol.

Thank you Daisy. I do need to go back to basics regarding the carb counting. Before dinner tonight I had a reading of 6.5 and 2 hrs later it was 8.5. I do think I must ask for another A1c test, cholesterol too perhaps when I have a medicine review appt next week. My blood pressure has gone...

Almost 2 years ago I had an HbA1c of 41mmol.

I have followed many of the threads on this site so have some idea of where this is heading. I also know what I should try and do about it - it's just doing it ! I didn't realise I should have taken a pre meal reading actually, I thought it was the post meal [2 hrs] that was the important one? I...

Almost 2 years ago I had an HbA1c of 41mmol.

As this was a 12 month follow up of a previous HbA1c which was also 41 my then dr said I was prediabetic and 'watch your diet' as the numbers would rise. I also have hypertension [controlled]. My current dr told me not to worry and not to bother with another test as I was perfectly well and...

fasting finger prick test of 6.2. Should I be concerned?

Thank you CatladyNZ. Re-reading what I last wrote I should have said my BP is in the region of <120/75> not writing it as a % I think you are spot on when you talk of the previous dr being of the type who doesn't believe people can stick to life style changes preferring to put patients on pills...
