Why do the Americans diagnose pre diabetes with an HbA1c result of 5.7/42

Thank you for the reply and I'm sorry to hear of your diagnosis. I think your symptoms are fairly typical of T2 from what I read. I do seem to have blurry vision too and some foggy thinking but wonder if that is my age [71] !! I suspect too that diabetes was in both sides of my family but am...

Why do the Americans diagnose pre diabetes with an HbA1c result of 5.7/42

I do hope the pain in your toe and numbness in your hand turns out to be nothing serious. Were you only given the diagnosis in June via the OGTT and subsequently in November given the HbA1c or have you had diabetes longer than that? I don't really understand all these numbers, they seem...

Why do the Americans diagnose pre diabetes with an HbA1c result of 5.7/42

Lilliepop are you already diagnosed with prediabetes or T2? I also find it very confusing! Many people list their levels on this forum and I see you don't; is that because you have only just been tested? As I understand it if you are not diabetic then an HbA1c result of 6% or 42 mmol/mol means...

Why do the Americans diagnose pre diabetes with an HbA1c result of 5.7/42

HbA1c of 41/5.9 mmol/mol might be very good if you are already diagnosed with diabetes, but if you aren't then it's almost pre diabetic. My problem is that 12 months ago 41 mmol/mol was my reading which I didn't find that out until recently, that is why I had the test done again. They did...

Why do the Americans diagnose pre diabetes with an HbA1c result of 5.7/42

Well I got my results yesterday and was cross because they are exactly the same as 11 months ago. Low carb diet, no salt, added sugar, v. little alcohol bmi <19 and an HbA1c of 41 mmol/mol. No idea how I can improve these figures and feel very fed up. Does pre diabetes inevitably turn into Type 2 ?

Why do the Americans diagnose pre diabetes with an HbA1c result of 5.7/42

but in the UK it is 6.0/42. I recently found out my reading was 5.9/41 eleven months ago and am due to have the test done again this week and am feeling apprehensive that last spring's 5.9/41 may have risen somewhat. My dr didn't mention it was rather high when I had the NHS health check done...

worried about Hba1c test and what a diagnosis of T2 would mean. Was told I had

Thank you Anniec and Collecting rocks [what sort of rocks do you collect?!] for your replies. Will let you know how the HbA1c goes. Sounds like you've done the same sort of thing diet wise. I know I used to eat far too much salt and sugar too .It's only recently that there is so much in the...

worried about Hba1c test and what a diagnosis of T2 would mean. Was told I had

I have finally plucked up the courage and made an appointment for the HbA1c test in ten days time. I was surprised that it is no longer a fasting test, when did this change I wonder. I also wonder if the cholesterol test will be re done too. Last year it was borderline high. I am dreading it...

worried about Hba1c test and what a diagnosis of T2 would mean. Was told I had

Thank you for your replies. I do feel confused and do wish I had known these numbers before now. What are the implications of a T2 diagnosis? Can you ever get off the diabetic register for example [or whatever it is called], if you subsequently sort your lifestyle and bring the HbA1c down to...

worried about Hba1c test and what a diagnosis of T2 would mean. Was told I had

hypertension after NHS health check. Nobody seemed to notice that the HbA1c was 5.9 mmol/mol until I saw it in my medical notes online and mentioned it to the doctor. He admitted it was too high and close to the pre diabetic level and has arranged for it to be re done in the new year. I am...

Prediabetes I had a health check last Feb and a diagnosis of hypertension was made after 24 hr monitor.

I did have to go onto meds for the hypertension, sadly. I hate being reliant on pills but seems I didn't really have a choice. However I only take just over the minimum dose of Losartan and that keeps it well within bounds using a home monitor and taking the readings with me when I go to the...

    thirsty and really worried

The amount of 'hidden' sugar in low fat fruit yogurts is terrifying, especially the Muller ones. I buy Morrisons own brand of Greek yogurt, plain and add my own flavours. They do a low fat one and a full fat one for comparison. The full fat one has more calories per 100 gr but less sugar than...

Prediabetes I had a health check last Feb and a diagnosis of hypertension was made after 24 hr monitor.

Thank you for your reply Chubbyian. The doctor has told me to make an appointment in the New year for a follow up HbA1c blood test. I think it's best to know one way or the other. The dr himself thinks the lifestyle changes I adopted a year ago on diagnosis of hypertension will almost certainly...

Prediabetes I had a health check last Feb and a diagnosis of hypertension was made after 24 hr monitor.

Very recently I have accessed my medical notes online and the full NHS health check results are there to read. So I was surprised to see HbA1c is automatically done and the result was 41mmol/mol. I think this is bumping on the pre diabetes level so I asked the doctor about it ,being surprised...
