Have you always gotten sick easily?

40 years diabetic. 10 years HIV. One sneeze in an office or airport and I've got a cold. Small-fry really. Adjust basal accordingly after about 6 hours. Infections are tricker to shift. Immune system is in good shape, it's just getting old!

    Freestyle at the Airport

Been to the states a few times. No problems with pumps or Libre. If you're smily, enthusiastic and happy to cooperate and explain what you've got they're just fine and professional exactly as you'd expect. (also, power down any kit that's going through x-rays. Don't panic if you forget. And...

MDI or insulin pump -- which do you prefer?

Pumps mean you attach more clutter to your body. You have to think about "which side will I sleep on? Can I wear that tight shirt?" On holiday you can't strip off at the beach so easily. CGM will eat up areas of your skin, and, really it's not too pretty. Those are the down-sides. The good...

Weird highs (12ish) after meals... what to do?

Was it pasta and white bread. Could be a faster acting care? I'm beginning to wonder about having to pre-dose insulin myself. The good news is that Novo are planning on releasing an ultra-rapid insulin (10 mins to peak as opposed to 30) later this year. I'll be keen to get my hands on that.

    Insulin pump

There aren't many consultants who'll recommend a pump. It took me several years and 3 NHS trusts to finally get one. However, you have a great advantage. The chap who's talking about his pump will explain which consultant he saw and how he got it. One of their main fears is that after spending...

    Keep getting faulty insulin cartridges!

I find, if I go somewhere hot, ambient temp >26degC (Oh yeah :-)) then my pump's insulin begins to weaken after 3 days and I'm having to ramp everything up by 30% by day 5. I keep the insulin under a t shirt all the time but it still happened. The answer (on the next trip) was a frio. No probs...

I'm confused about what to do when I'm on the beer, Inject ? don't inject?

Depends how ****** I get. Usually I can keep fairly sensible and test/inject/correct, I find there's a fair amount of carbs in a pint of beer, in tonic-water etc and I ALWAYS need some insulin. However, if I get completely razzled, one gets a bit more careless and it's really easy to over-do the...

CGM - anyone got one on NHS?

As for hackers etc, it's really not an issue. Yes, someone jammed the a pump's RF systems. That's perfectly possible (but a clear and easily detectable contravention of wireless regs). As for malicious hacking at a data level, it's not really possible due to the VERY low power and short ranges...

CGM - anyone got one on NHS?

CE & FCC regulations are quite sensible and open for good engineering to get through. They're not that much of an issue. FDA appears to be more of a consortium of drugs companies (via their lobbyists) and far more problematic for new developments, which is why some of us ignore them and develop...

CGM - anyone got one on NHS?

You've never heard of the extended low power protocols in the newer versions of the 802.11 standard?

CGM - anyone got one on NHS?

The 2.4 gig band is fairly open, it's very short range stuff and thirsty on battery life. Give it a go, it'll be fine, trust me - I've worked with these technologies for years and years.

CGM - anyone got one on NHS?

There's no need to get in a flap about security. 1) someone has to really want to cause you trouble and 2) the range is only a few centimetres. So there's little to be worried about there.

CGM - anyone got one on NHS?

I got him the second time. It appears to be a monitoring issue on USB line in or across the internal battery. John explained how to reset it (power up via USB, press the reset button with a paperclip through the hole in the centre of the back). The dexie rebooted, the error went and the...

CGM - anyone got one on NHS?

Started using my (very expensive) new Dexcom last Thursday. Fantastic. Last night when I checked it before bed: Call local Distributer. ERROR: HWBAT now it doesn't work, it just bleeps. Nobody answers the phone at Advanced Therapeutics and John Hughes isn't picking up his mobile. Anyone here...

    CMG

I didn't need medical approval to buy mine this week. Just a deep pocket. It's good though.

    Worst place....

Driving through motorway repairs negotiating bollarded lanes with a BG of 1.8 is... "interesting".

How do you record your diabetes?

I don't bother recording them. I test loads, if it's over 8/9 I'll correct, if that doesn't fix it, I'm probably coming down with something and I need a basal increase (which is, of course FAR easier to do with a pump than a pen) But permanent records? No. I've got to carry enough clutter...

CGM - anyone got one on NHS?

The only place to buy Dexcom in the UK is from Advanced Therapeutics, Warwick. I asked them last November: DexCom G4 Receiver Kit £1075.00 (ex. VAT) (Includes receiver (results displayed in mmol/l), transmitter, DM Studio software, charger and travel adaptors, user manuals, PC down load...

CGM - anyone got one on NHS?

<shrug> They won't sell me their CGM. They won't sell me their infusion sets. Animas becomes rather pointless after that.
