Type 1.5 Has anybody in Ireland noticed the medical profession is ignorant of the Dawn Phenomenon?

@kitedoc Thanks for that. I’ve since decided not to waste my time on the wilfully blinkered. I was upset and discouraged that this doctor I’ve been on a waiting list for two years to see, and who has only seen me twice, had reduced me to her stereotype of T2 diabetics needing a kicking to...

Type 1.5 Has anybody in Ireland noticed the medical profession is ignorant of the Dawn Phenomenon?

I’ve recently started to have my diabetic reviews with a teaching hospital in Ireland, the second of such two days ago. Dismayed by the doctor’s tendency to see me as a statistic rather than a guy with specific difficulties, she changed my meds to address problems she thought I SHOULD have (but...

Don't make me angry... You won't like me when I get angry (or how to not hulk out)

The response is a reflex, and reflexes happen before a rational response can be formulated. This might help you learn a little about that: Brain activity, reactivity help explain diabetics’ negative feelings and risk for depression (University of Iowa, May 2018)

Did you just diagnose me as having a mood disorder? Wow! Your narcissism is boundless.

Don't make me angry... You won't like me when I get angry (or how to not hulk out)

While everybody conforms to the opinion that such poor affect (moodiness, irritability, anxiety, etc) is just having a bad attitude, I've always seen that as just victim blaming that goes on to poor and unwanted advice about what you 'should' do. So tiresome. Anyway, current research from the...

Don't make me angry... You won't like me when I get angry (or how to not hulk out)

Thanks, everyone, for those kind words. While such incidents are mundane things for most people, they are deeply upsetting for me and I don't have a very supportive family. My mother is concerned that any public displays by me will reflect on her and has her own anxiety issues that often leads...

Don't make me angry... You won't like me when I get angry (or how to not hulk out)

I did check to see if there was a current thread on sudden episodes of anger/rage/panic/anxiety - whatever. But there doesn't seem to be. For whatever reason, I have a hair-trigger temper. Before I was diagnosed six years ago, I knew I could be hot-tempered but losing my temper happened only a...

Reaching out for some help, maybe someone else has been here?

As I read these posts, I see it's not unusual for people to struggle with testing. So I wonder, could CGM be an option that might be available to them? I suppose that if the root of their aversion to testing is being confronted with the test results that suggestion doesn't help.

    What's wrong with me?

@Alex_B I have an inkling of what you're going through and one of the things I'm picking up on is the loneliness and isolation. Others have been down that path and some have spoken here. I think it might help to know that it is not an unknown path. Nobody has mentioned 'diabetes burnout' yet, so...

    Insomnia

I've been sleeping poorly for a few years, but I was generally OK with that. But when I read that sleep deprivation is a major contributor to insulin resistance, I realised I needed to take it in hand. I'm a researcher and a Psychology graduate so I already had a lead on what to investigate. Two...

    Insomnia and diabetes

It's accepted high glucose levels affect sleep and insufficient sleep contributes to insulin resistance - causing high glucose levels. My situation is the same as yours. I deal with it by getting up and leaving the bedroom if I'm awake longer than 45 minutes and not stress about it. And I...

Effects of Wide Blood Sugar Swings

My situation is similar and I share your concerns. It seems that it is the magnitude of the variation that is more the cause of the cognitive issues. I found this page (https://www.bd.com/us/diabetes/page.aspx?cat=7001&id=14131) includes a formula that I've worked into my log (a spreadsheet of...

    Suddenly developed tingling feet

I had the same thing, well, similar, since I was diagnosed five years ago. Not painful just tingling, numbness in my left foot. Yes, ONLY my left foot. A curious phenomenon since my reading demonstrated the affliction is usually a symmetrical one - meaning it equally affects both feet...

    Diabetic mincemeat

Snap! That's the one I used this year. It worked very well. I got 12 mince pies out of it. I swapped out a couple of ingredients for half of them, using fresh apricots and hazelnuts. A tip, don't put a lid on them and save on another couple of carbs. When you've a dollop of brandy cream on them...

    Need some advice.

There is an absolutely lovely woman over on YouTube, Ketobetic Aline (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6XMOOJt59-Ma2ed4Te4ZwQ) who suffers similarly. Her channel is all about clips discussing low-carb cooking and keeping control of her thrush and diabetes. She's like the ideal Grandma.

And statins, too. Worth mentioning that because you're probably on those, too.

    Upset with doctors appointment

The long term effects aren't inevitable. Type 2 CAN be managed. Nobody would say easily, many would say it's as demanding as a fulltime job. There are many people round here more experienced than I, but if you haven't already got serious complications, there's a lot you can do. While, as I said...

Letter that arrived on the weekend...

I got that, too. It was a bit depressing. I've been A-OK 'til now. But I'm told that while there is evidence, it is slight and doesn't affect my eyesight. And will most likely reverse itself now that I'm on the right insulin dosages and have sugar levels have been consistently good.

Favourite tv programmes when you were young.....

Overall, someone or other has listed all my favourites - nearly. But I'm going to give American '60s sitcoms a shout-out: The Ghost and Mrs Muir, Mary Tyler Moore Show (I love the everyday masculinity of the male characters), Jeannie, Get Smart, Beverley Hillbillies. It's great that so many of...

Going on about diabetes too much

I don't think I'll do that again. I had a contract a job on a research team at an Irish university. I had been diagnosed three years earlier and was still struggling to get my levels under control. I was very self-conscious about being moody, irritable or anxious and felt it necessary to try and...
