Anyone else have fluctuating eyesight prescription with high BS?

Yup, all that's pretty normal. The glucose levels adjust the viscosity of the fluid in your eyes, changing refractive indices, lens length and that's where the fluctuation happens. I had to get specs as soon as I got out of hospital because of the blurred vision. My doc was all with the...

    Metformin Side Effects

Mimi, by all means discuss advice given in these forums with your doctor but don't take them as gospel. I love the Low Carb High Fat diet but I'd be reluctant to urge anyone else to go on it just like that. It sounds like you've been introduced to metformin in the usual manner and having...

    Diagnosed a few days ago

There is an undiscovered world in store for you. The Internet is awash with diabetic, keto and paleo cuisine that contains many modified old favourites and fantastic new ones. Consider this taster: peanut cookies. That's chunky peanut butter mixed with an egg and Splenda. 1.5 g carbs per cookie...

    Substituting Bread and Pasta

I made a fantastic seafood lasagna last weekend: seafood mix in a white onion sauce with layers of spinach and feta separated by - wait for it - 1/4" slices of eggplant (prebaked in a 150C oven for 15 minutes, flipped over half-way through) The macronutrients are: 352kCal, 37g protein, 10g net...

How Much Insulin Do You Take?

Sorry, I have to ask you where your authority comes from and why it's superior to the University of California's diabetes teaching hospital. My BG experience tells me that the amount of insulin I'm on doesn't really keep my BG in target and that insulin resistance makes any increase is dosage a...

Can someone help make sense PLEASE?

How Much Insulin Do You Take?

I'm similar: 36 in the morning and 44 in the evening. I'm blaming insulin resistance. I should be on a daily total of 55 units going by the formula from the Diabetes Teaching Center at the University of California, Using the formula: TOTAL DAILY INSULIN DOSE = 0.55 x 70 Kg (for example) =...

    Rolling my eyes

That's what I used to do but since being diagnosed I am far more quick to anger. I had dinner last week with some colleagues from my research group. I've been unhappy about being unhappy and I've fallen into the trap of telling people I'm feeling irritable or moody because I'm a diabetic. When...

Just found out I am pregnant

Aaw, Carly Lou. That's the saddest thing I've read. I'm so sorry for you and your husband.

Have you had trouble getting test strips?

I never had a problem in RCT in Wales - once I pointed out the maths to them. I was under instructions to test twice a day. That's 60 strips a month on average. Yet the test strips come in boxes of 50 so one was clearly insufficient. There was no argument and I got my two boxes a month.

    Type 1 -Testing per day

Yup, that's my routine, too. If I suspect my levels are too high before I take my evening pre-dinner shot, I don't bother testing then and wait until the postprandial window a couple of hours later.

Can't seem to get overnights sorted

This has been an ongoing frustration for me for a year. It seemed no matter what I tried, my reading in the morning was going to be around the 13 mark. I figured it was a consequence of my daily exercise, that weight training was bound to cause a flood of HGH and that would knock insulin into a...

    Left hand gone numb

@CatLadyNZ Agreed, dear. That's why I said that bit was subjective opinion. I'm not one to lecture other people. Trained as a psychotherapist, I take the view everyone is an expert on their OWN life.

    Left hand gone numb

Jon, I can appreciate you're concern about this being part of the dreaded neuropathy. I think it unlikely since you're newly diagnosed and seem to have an active lifestyle. But subjective opinion aside, the nature of neuropathy is that it presents symmetrically - that is, it affects both...

    Ice cream

You might be in luck. Frank's do just two flavours of diabetic ice cream and strawberry is one of them. I've picked it up in Holland & Barretts and Tesco. I should probably mention that I'm in Wales and that seems to be its sphere of activity. I mention that by way of a possible explanation for...

    DAFNE course

@pinkjinks58 Hi, there. I'm interested in that course you did. I had asked my doctor about DAFNE at my last review because it sounded like something I needed. At my review before that one, the internet told me there was a six month waiting list. But this time her boss told me I was ineligible...

    Non-spiking yoghurt!

Just adding my thumbs-up to WW fromage frais. Sadly, it's the only dessert they got right. Usually, I use Greek yogurt and sweeten it with one of the daVinci sugarfree syrups.

Funny looks at the chemist's !!!

I really wouldn't pay too much attention to people like that. Ask to see her supervisor. I tried to buy Adios weight loss pills in Boots a while ago. First the girl told me that she couldn't sell them to me because by the look of me my BMI was too high. After I wasted five minutes pointing out...

    Mood Swings in Men

@noblehead: I've investigated the possibility of depression. Of course, that was the obvious suspect. But I've been assessed and it's been discounted. Generally, I'm pretty upbeat, enjoying the challenges of sourcing and cooking the ideal recipes and getting daily exercise. Just these intense...

    Mood Swings in Men

I've developed a strong preference for the quiet life since I was diagnosed at the start of the year. I'm nearly 50 so a diagnosis of 'juvenile' diabetes was a bit of a surprise. I think I took it fairly well, all the more since I don't have any family around or a great network of friends. I've...
