    Sweetners

Usually, the sweetener will say on the packet what ratio to use. Truvia says "1/3 teaspoon sweetens like 1 teaspoon of sugar". But from personal experience, I find even that is far sweeter than sugar (and has a bitter aftertaste) Perfect Sweet (xylitol based) has a 1:1 ratio, so can be...

    Flaxseed Pancake Recipe

For me, Sundays used to be about Pancakes. Back in my pre-diagnosis days my routine breakfast was Special K or something equally as dull, but on a Sunday I used to make those big fluffy american pancakes, cover them with butter and maple syrup.. and the whole family (dogs included) would enjoy...

    Irritable Bowel Syndrome

I have IBS, and have suffered awful side-effects over the years. I had a long list of foods that I could possibly eat on a weekend when not working, and foods that I couldn't eat at all. ever. Since going on to Metformin, I've found that although the medication makes me feel nauseous, my IBS...

    Favorite low-carb snacks?

I found myself obscurely on the daily mail website yesterday (don't hold it against me, I was directed to another article there)... Anyway, there was an article about gross foods from the 50's, 60's, and 70's. Once of the foods was a salad set in jelly... lettuce, greens, all the usual salad...

    Is progression/decline inevitable?

The progression/decline is what puts the fear into me. I can't get my bg into the 4's and 5's... 3 months ago I had a spate of 5's. But the last 2 months have crept up to the 7's and 8's. I started the Atkins Induction last week and expected to see at least a little reduction in my...

    Low Carb Resolution

There's an awful lot that were in the mid-to-late teens... Rachels, Sainbury's own, spring to mind. Currently being on a modified version of the Atkins induction, a 100g of Rachel's yoghurt could almost blow a whole days carbs. Even when I was on a moderately low carb diet, I couldn't...

When to resume exercise after illness?

How are you feeling now Thommo? I think I've turned the corner. I'm only hacking my lungs up first thing in a morning now... so tomorrow is the day to try a bit of cardio and see if it does or doesn't kill me lol. Bit worried about the lack of exercise now, as I've started to see a definite...

    Low Carb Resolution

I second this. About a week after being diagnosed my Mom and I went down the dairy aisle checking every single yoghurt... and the only ones not loaded with carbs/sugar are the Full Fat Greek Style ones. Some of the low fat ones are absolutely loaded with sugar. Initially it was...

What has been your experience of taking ACE inhibitors?

I had a nasty allergic reaction to Lisinopril. It sent my BP soaring and heart rate to about 125 at rest. Other than that I felt clammy, sweaty, drained, and generally like I was about to keel over. What I will say is that if you have a bad reaction, you'll know about it right away...

What is the best food memory you have ?

The best meal I ever had was at a Chinese Restaurant in Birmingham. It was Valentines day 2012 and Mr Luceeloo had recently proposed so we thought we should at least honor the occasion. We didn't prebook, we just wandered into the same restaurant that we had our first date 5 years earlier...

    Is stress causing you problems?

That's quite a good little test. The outcome of my results are interesting - they pretty much match a list that I wrote about 2 hours ago of what I need to do to be less stressed out at work. I had a bad, bad, bad day at work today, and the beauty to that is that tomorrow could actually be...

    What's healthiest

I drink water and sparkling water if I'm feeling decadent lol. I do have one cup of coffee a day - always ground and never instant. I used to love a Latte from the local petrol station, but found out that a cappuccino had less of an effect on my reading, so I've swapped to that.

Lost the battle with cholesterol, any particular type of Statin is better?

I'm on Atorvastatin too. I didn't have any side effects with Simvastatin, but saw a locum a few months ago who was really into his statins. He did a bit of a medicine review and said that he wasn't happy with me being on the simvastatin, switched it to Atorvastatin. I've never had a single...

    URINE INFECTION

The presence of sugar in the urine can cause an overgrowth of bacteria in the bladder. My diabetes was diagnosed due to a nasty uti. Drink plenty of water, herbal teas, and avoid caffeine or sugar (obviously!). GP can prescribe an antibiotic called Nitrofurantoin, which can be taken long...

    Strange fasting readings

These could be my readings... Random and slightly high, with a bit of dawn phenomenon thrown in. My first reading of the day is rarely below 8, usually in the high 9's. I've tried not eating before bed, I've tried eating before bed, I've tried eating something carby before bed, and have tried...

    How were you diagnosed

I'd been a little bit run down for a while. I have a stressful job, so put it down to that. I got frequent cystitis, but didn't seek treatment because it was a problem that most of the females in my family suffered from. I self treated by drinking loads of water to flush out my system. I...

    Sugar free Jelly

I'm at work at the moment with two such tubs in my desk drawer. Hartleys do them... Look for the light blue labels I would say so yes. I still have some gelatine so I'll give it a go and let you know how it turns out.

    Dental Charges

Not that I'm aware of. However, if you join a plan like the BHSF, then you pay something like £12 a month and can claim most of the charges back - I've been doing that for 15 years and it does help towards the cost.

    Sugar free Jelly

The jell-o stuff starts setting right away... no idea what kind of unnatural substance it's made from, but next time I'll have a look on the packet! Jelly made with fizzy pop is great. I also make my own with gelatine sachets.
