Expected for quite some time, and now diagnosed - Hello Type 2, not nice to meet you

Did she say 'Newcastle Diet' at any point and say it would be for a short time only?

Expected for quite some time, and now diagnosed - Hello Type 2, not nice to meet you

Reading the ingredients list on groceries is certainly an eye-opener when you start searching for low carb things rather than just low sugar. It sometimes seems like deliberate health sabotage on a worldwide scale. We lived in Eindhoven (Netherlands) for a while and met the manager of a local...

Expected for quite some time, and now diagnosed - Hello Type 2, not nice to meet you

Sounds like you have advanced to T2 expert level very quickly indeed and we are all admiring your Lebensfreude. I'm a Scot, brought up mainly in England, but have spent lots of time in the Freiburg area of Germany. I agree with WeeFergus that a Scottish throat can master a soft 'ch' better than...

    Poldark

Of course. I should have googled. I bless it every day.

    Poldark

That's the one - and the other one from Being Human is in 'Banished', I see.

    Day one and hello

Hello and welcome to the club, Enjoy your wine, if it's relatively dry and the sugar has fermented it is low carb. Well done on the smoking. I quit almost a year ago and found it surprisingly easy. I wish I could have some of that cash back. As to diet, there's a lot to learn about. You'll...

    Poldark

Oh definitely - although I will already have to iplayer the first episode as I missed the start. I loved the original series and the new Ross was good in that series as a vampire. Don't remember the name. Brain fog!

Why are sugars high in the morning?

I do exactly the same. Doesn't help that things are very stressful at present and I am waking early and lying there, fretting and imagining a cartoon-like picture of cortisol squirting into my blood.

    New Stuff

I'll be honest. I made an attempt at biscuits with P28 High Protein Peanut Spread/White Chocolate, this afternoon. I used two tablespoons of the spread, about 100 g of ground almonds, two tablespoons of protein powder and one egg. Food processed to a ball, divided into 18 (was trying for 20!)...

    New Stuff

Still haven't got around to doing anything but tasting a teaspoonful of this to be honest, but I am planning on making something along the lines of Scandi's peanut cookies. Maybe half a jar, a little powdered sweetener, an egg and some ground almonds to firm it up. I'll give it a go tomorrow.

    slimming world

I lost 3 stone with Slimming World 17 years ago (!) on Green (Carbohydrate) Plan. It worked so well for me and I felt very healthy. Red (protein) days seemed to halt my weight loss completely for the week. Of course, I later put the weight back on and yoyoed many times over the years. I did...

    your life as a diabetic

Such a sad story. I'm waiting to hear the rest.

    Do you eat breakfast?

I find it hard. It's one thing to think 'I'm diabetic, I can have a cooked breakfast, except for toast', it's quite another to get up an appetite for it. I try to alternate yoghurt and berries with eggs in some form. If I can be bothered to make it, a sweet omelette with blueberries is always...

    What have you eaten today?

Well, it's maybe a bit much to expect my other half of 30 years to suddenly take an interest in them, but I am quite bendy and can't resist raising them to my nose and having a sniff. I really can't understand it. The amount of quite new slippers I have had to bin because they made me gag! TMI?

    What have you eaten today?

I'm the same with the solid coconut fat. I started using the dregs in the jar as a moisturiser on my feet. It's rather strange. I used to be famous for my smelly feet, now they smell rather like digestive biscuits!

    Over the counter cold cures

Many thanks for the Night Nurse capsules hint. I will make sure I keep them in stock. I rarely get colds or flu - and was jabbed this year - but came down with flu about 10 days ago and am still suffering some effects. The pharmacist basically talked me out of most of my old favourites - Lemsip...

Would you want to go back to eating the way you used to?

It would be handy to put something between two slices of wholemeal from time to time, particularly when travelling, but IBS would stop me even if Type 2 didn't. I sometimes miss a breakfast cereal or porridge as mornings are horrid enough without having to make a decision about what to eat. Mr...

    Colonoscopy

There you go. As with many unpleasant things in life, the anticipation is worse than the experience - and that's the most personal film you are ever likely to see!

    Colonoscopy

From another colonoscopy veteran: I went with light anaesthetic rather than general, so was also awake to see my beautiful insides. I found the process fascinating and not at all painful. The extent of the clear-out from the purge can be rather shocking though. I felt fine and clear-headed...

    trying new veg

Speaking of cauliflower cheese, I wondered how to replace a bechamel sauce base, then discovered the joy of double cream and mature grated cheddar, warmed together until melted.
