    absolutely gutted

thank you... kalfwood, I'm sorry to hear you have had eye trouble, but thank you so much for posting your experiences - it has helped. I am feeling so scared and worried. I am only 30, I've only had this 2 1/2 years and it just makes me so frightened about how I will be in, say, 20 years time...

    T1 and Jury Service

I did jury service last year, for weeks! It wasn't a problem. I took my meter into the courtroom along with insulin, dextrose tablets and some non-crunchy snacks in case I needed something but didn't want to be loud! I told the usher at the beginning of the service and she said that if I...

    absolutely gutted

I have just opened a letter from the eye screening people telling me they have found "evidence of early diabetic changes" :( I am so gutted. I have only had type 1 2 1/2 years and I have always had excellent hbA1cs - currently 5.6. I'm always the "star patient" when I go to the hospital...

    hba1c 5.7

my experience has been similiar. my last hbA1c before my DAFNE course was 5.9%, but with a lot of hypos. Did DAFNE, that was very helpful in that it has shown me that I was using too much insulin which was why I was hypoing all the time and feeling like my blood sugar was crashing all day...

    So upset

You poor thing  Can you get referred to a diabetes specialist unit in a hospital for your diabetes care? I'm type 1 so I'm not sure whether type 2s also qualify but I have had the best care from my hospital by nurses who know exactly what they're talking about (and are very quick to...

what do you guys suggest for breakfast?

Spinach (lots), broccoli, cucumber, celery, sugar snap peas :D I love my green juice in the morning. I used to have to put an apple in too but I've got used to stomaching it without now and when I put an apple in the other day it tasted too sweet!

    Diabetes and Depression

I definitely think there is a link between diabetes and depression. I seemed fine at diagnosis, in fact everyone was astounded at how I "just got on with it", but now two years in I feel very depressed about it all. Although I've always had good control with A1cs between 5.9 and 6.5 I just feel...

2000-2500 calories?, on a low carb? exercise + muscle...

I know what you mean, Serial... I'm certainly coming around to the low carb way of thinking as my post-prandial readings are coming right down (type 1 by the way) and I'm feeling a lot more stable in myself, but I am struggling with the calories big time! I am putting oil on all my salads...

    Whats the longest honeymoon period?

Hi Jo I don't know any facts about how long the honeymoon period can last but just wanted to let you know that you won't necessarily have to start using huge amounts of insulin even if you are honeymooning at the moment :) I was diagnosed two years ago and think I probably had a little bit...

    Dafne course.. should l go?

I got the hospital to write a letter to my company describing how employees who had been on DAFNE have been proven to have less time off work sick/for appointments!!! It worked and I got the week off :D And I have to say my company is EXTREMELY strict with absence/sick leave...

    Dafne course.. should l go?

I found DAFNE really good, although I ate significantly less carbs than the rest of the group and was encouraged to eat more starchy carbs I was not forced to and I learnt a lot of very useful information. I would definitely go if you've got the chance.

how much fat is too much fat???

hello I've been trying out low carb lately and fallen flat on my face like every time I try it!!! I'm getting about 1100 calories a day which might just be why I end up bingeing on carbs  Also depressed and no energy. thing is, just can't seem to get the calories up. I'm vegan, so...

    insulin/DAFNE and low carb

thanks everyone :D Fergus - yes, that makes sense! I guess it's trial and error to find your own insulin needs for virtually 0 carbs meals and then back to DAFNE for carby meals... I feel like a scientist sometimes, all these experiments and keeping records and changing this variable then...

    insulin/DAFNE and low carb

thanks everyone for your help on the other low carb questions I posted, much appreciated :D To those of you who are type 1, I'm wondering how this all fits in with the whole DAFNE approach? I assumed that if you have a meal without carbs, you don't take any Novorapid - that has worked for me...

    Raw Diet

I also try to do as much raw as possible! I sprout - my kitchen worktop is full of the things and is driving my partner to distraction! What I am finding difficult is deciding whether to do raw with lots of fruit or with lots of fat - so essentially low carb. Love my fruit but am sure it...

    some questions...

dear low carbers I am type 1 on levemir/novorapid and have been dabbling in low-er carbs. At the moment I like my fruit too much to be low, low carb! I would say a "low carb" day for me would be about 100 grams. I have two main sticking points every time I try: Number 1 is starch/sugar/junk...

    Diabetes and eating disorders

hi Aoife I know exactly what you're saying. I was bulimic before I was diagnosed with type 1 and was doing well with recovery up til then. The diabetes made my eating disorder spiral for the reasons you say - the obsessing with numbers, carbs, "right and wrong, good and bad" foods, the guilt...
