    Rename Type 1 Diabetes

The facebook group, and to some extend this post, has shocked and saddened me. What a shame some of us feel the need to "justify" our disease. I too have been in this position in the past... but as many have said already, it is surely important to remember that whatever our "diabetic...

    Nighttime hypoglycemia - excessive salivation

Afraid I've not come across excessive salivation either. Is it possible not all the wet sheets are from the drooling though? The severe hypos I have had I have come round drenched too, from sweating. And even the more minor ones I have resolved I find if they go far enough I get very sweaty...

    Hypo fear

Hi Kegstore, No I would like to talk to the DSN about it. I'm presuming they are the right person? I don't regularly see one at the moment, just my consultant, but I met one of them last week while inpatient (before the major hypos though, so did no discuss them). I think the problem is I...

    Hypo fear

Hi Jopar, thank you so much for your post. Yep, definitely getting there. No hypos for over 48 hours, and no serious ones for over 60 hours now so pretty sure gliclazide all out my system (blood sugars been in double figures for 24 hours! I know this is bad long term, but short term I needed it...

    Hypo fear

Kegstore thank you, you've hit the nail on the head. I think because I'm a medical student everyone presumes I can cope fine and know what to do. So was due to see the diabetic nurse Monday (discharged yesterday) but they called today and said they didn't need to see me, and I could call in 10...

    Hypo fear

Thanks for your comments Ali. Agree with you on this one, it's a big danger. Not the problem here though - even between hypos my sugars were only coming up to 5-6 with intensive treatment...and was in the hospital so they were making sure it was being treated appropriately. Sigh, I wish diet...

    Hypo fear

Just back from a 4 day admission of prolonged hypos (joy of gliclazide...) However it was the worst spell I've had yet, involving an admission to resus for one, and another episode of complete unconsciousnes for a fairly substantial length of time. Hypos requiring 3rd part assistance and...

Why do I feel the need to justify my diabetes?

Have now been diabetic for over a year. Had a very weird diagnosis process: GP said I was type 2, hospital said type 1, antibodies suggested otherwise so they said type 2, and my consultant now considers me a MODY. The two genetic tests they did came back negative but he says this in no way...

    Open water swimming

Copepod - I just wear a costume - for some of the things I swim no wetsuit is allowed so I do not want to get too used to it. Didn't know it was possible to get foot cover only though, that's such a good idea, thank you! Don't suppose you know anywhere good for me to look for it? Hana - My...

    Lost NHS Medical Exemption card

Hello, Have lost my purse (argh stress), and one of the many things this contained was my card so I do not have to pay prescriptions. Which the pharmacist often asks to see for some reason... Does anyone know how I go about replacing this? Am browsing the internet but have not easily found an...

    Open water swimming

Thank you both! Hana - you get used to it suprisingly quickly! But I must keeo my shoulders under the water the whole time or I get very cold very fast (maybe that's why aerobics is extra cold). Kegstore - I have seen the film (Open Water, at least if that's what you mean) - horrible...

    Open water swimming

Does anyone here have experience of this and diabetes, and whether I need to be taking any extra precautions because of it? Am due to be seeing my consultant to "discuss things" in the next few weeks but I am wanting to keep at least cold water training before that. The past week I've been...

    Cortisol & Diabetes?

Hi Lizzie, I don't know if there is a widely "known" link between cortisol and diabetes, although as your book said one of the effects of cortisol in preparing the body for stress is to increase release of glucose (increasing sugar levels): in fact people with excess cortisol often have...

    Stubborn elevated blood sugar

Wow, thank you both for the so swift replies. I'm actually getting the same range with both my meters...although they are both one touch so whether they might therefore both go wrong at once? I'll be on the look out for a Lloyds chemist to double check it...

    Stubborn elevated blood sugar

Last 48 hours or so my blood sugars have been really weird. Always 11-13mmol, regardless of time, whether I've just eaten, when I've taken my meds. I know this isn't an acutely dangerous level, but it's still not numbers I'm happy to be consistently seeing. To my knowledge I'm not ill or...

    Reverse diabetes?!

Dear jopar, Thank you for such a detailed and informative post. At the request of my consultant I have actually done some night readings. Very occasionally I go low overnight, but this has never been when I've woken to test it, only when I've woken hypo (I seem to get nightmares! - vivid...

    Reverse diabetes?!

Dear hanadr, Thanks for your help. I only meant my 1hr post food readings were "non-diabetic" - with the exception of breakfast 85% are in the 4-5.5 range which I'm pretty sure is good. People I've tested seem to be at the low 5s (4.5-5.5 I'd say, although even up to 7ish about half hour after...

    Gliclazide

Hi Steve, I take 80mg gliclazide twice a day, but did use to take the 30mg MR tablet (have had between 30 and 90mg at various points). Definitely have had "shaky" episodes and hypos on both sets of gliclazide. I had less hypos on the MR, but they lasted a lot longer (due to its longer action)...

    Reverse diabetes?!

I've been diabetic for nearly 1 year now, and take 80mg gliclazide twice a day. Blood sugars normally pretty well controlled - hypos only after swimming training and HbA1c 5.8%. My diabetes seems to take a really weird form though - my high sugars are BEFORE I eat - once I've eaten I am...

    Gliclazide?

Yes, I have to have an ultrasound scan and a urine sample, and then the consultant said she would take some blood for genetics tests when I go back in December. I am on gliclazide 30mg which I presume is a MODY dose? I hpe so! Thanks for the information about the exemption card, I will go to my...
