    Pitta Bread?

You need to test yourself to find the impact of 2 ryvita v 1 pitta. if you try pitta go for a wholemeal one rather than a white one. Alternatively the very useful nutritional advice should enable you to compare the carb impact of each options. Crispbreads can be good to naturally limit carb...

Is Sucrose (sugar) half a carb, as is half fructose?

This is why many of us go easy on all carbs, not just the simple ones, but the complex ones too.

    Coffee/tea

It might be a response to caffeine - Mrs P started feeling ill if she drunk normal tea when she was pregnant more than 20 years ago. Does the same thing happen if you have decaff? Bit of a nuisance if it is. Black coffee remains my guilt free vice. Best wishes P

new, in denial, and petrified! Please help!!!!!!

You can only have as many carbs as won't spike you. There is no point in eating carbs that take you above 9, because they are not delivering energy, they are sloshing around in your bloodstream causing complications. Only eating to the meter and testing will tell you what your system can cope...

You will have to pay the meal price!

Many restaurants and cafes do offer the chance to do swaps. Production line places can be less flexible though. In my experience, seaside resorts offer poorer choices, as many eating houses are geared up to churn out big helpings of chips. I got a bit tired of Greek salad in the summer - many of...

Diagnosed with Type 2 a month ago today....

Hi Geezer, Sounds like a rubbish few months. But at least you're still upright. The trots in a lorry cab must be awkward. Roadside eating houses are not the best place for low carb snacks! Good news is bacon's OK for diabetics. I was diagnosed about a year ago. I found it easiest to tweak the...

    Small NHS breakthrough

My health centre were delighted when my Hba1C was well down last time I was tested. My GP rang me up to congratulate me. They're happy for me to remain on my sustainable diet while the results are good. They seem to be being successful with several other folk I know.

    Making Casseroles?

If you can tolerate small amount of carbs and really miss the rice, I find that mixing rice with cauliflower, mushroom, lentils, peas (or whatever) can lower the amount of rice eaten but keep the portion size similar. This will not work for some people. I find brown rice has a smaller effect on...

Are doctors too quick to prescribe meds over supporting lifestyle change?

They made no recommendations about exercise. The DN was more concerned about roasted meat than carbs, although she did stipulate pretty small portions of carbs.

Coke and Diet Coke: The Facts & The Fiction

Since our digestive tracts are not made of copper the reaction of weak acids dissolving superficial copper oxide from pennies is of no significance - the same reaction happens with vinegar, ketchup, brown sauce and many other edible materials.

    Frustrated already

Hi Carlo, Welcome. Diabetics get a whole mass of conflicting advice. As a T2, your liver and muscles are not responding well to insulin, consequently you cannot metabolise carbohydrates well. Some offcial advice is to ignore this, cut the fat (fatty liver is a cause of T2) reduce the carbs a bit...

    Neil - Diagnosed today - type 2

Hi Neil, Welcome. Diabetes seems like a lot to get your head round. The key thing is to find things that you like eating that are low carb or metabolised slowly. This is easier said than done for some people. Our food industry has a huge sector flogging cheap carbs to people. Many people, if...

    Desmond Day

I suspect the idea of print outs with your data is standard Desmond stuff. It sounds as if your Desmond course was pretty much the same as mine - the idea is that having seen your data, you then set yourself some targets. I don't think they actually said "carbs with every meal" - the biggest...

    Junk Food Temptation

Hi Type2 Guy, It's pretty miserable when food that has been part of your life suddenly becomes forbidden. I find that focussing on what I can eat is better than worrying about what I can't have. However, early days are when you need to modify your palate and be strict - what things in particular...

    Superfoods: The real story

Well those graphs look like textbook examples of how carbs are supposed to be metabolised. Key thing is that non-diabetics get the spike under control pretty fast.
