    Celeriac

One of the best recipies for celeriac is this one http://www.ibreatheimhungry.com/2015/02/low-carb-celeriac-bacon-parmesan-rosti.html - I substitute parmesan with any kind of cheese I happen to have at hand and skip the parsley. The three key ingredients are bacon, celeriac and cheese. Easy and...

    Helpful Apps

I have tested quite a few apps. The best for me is BG Monitor Pro (the paid version has a few addded features but the free one is good too) It's an Android app. I don't use the food tracking feature but for recording BGs and insulin is the fastest and most intuitive. It can calculate your bolus...

Exercise bike or rowing machine ?

I have no experience with rowing machines but I love my stationary bike. I have been using it for years (since becoming diabetic nearly every day for half an hour). I can watch TV or read on my Kindle while exercising and I'm not bored. I don't know if I could row for half an hour.

    Sweeteners

If you have pets it's worth knowing that xylitol is toxic to dogs.

    Sweeteners

Stevia is a plant and thus supposed to be all-natural and harmless but for me its taste is just unacceptable. I tried different brands and different forms but I can't use it - the bitter aftertaste is overpowering. By the way powdered forms sometimes contain as little as a few percent of stevia...

Help with Appetite and Controlling Diabetes

Being T1 you can eat what you want as long as you can keep your levels steady and not put on weight. There are many T1 diabetics who don't bother with any special diet. Sometimes having that piece of chocolate and correct dose of insulin is better than trying to avoid sweets altoghether and than...

    Scrambled eggs?

I eat low-carb and I need 2U of Humalog or Novorapid for 2 fried eggs and coffee (no sugar, a dash of cream). When I don't eat carbs I still need insulin for protein and fat especially for breakfast.

    Breakfasts. What can I eat?!

I make waffles or pancakes with protein powder. It's one egg, a scoop of protein powder, 1tbs of water and a pinch of baking powder. When ready top it with a bit of Greek yogurt. It's really good and I can eat it every day for months.

How do you record your diabetes?

I use BG Monitor Pro app on my Android phone. It works for me - I can put in my bg, insulin, and notes. It calculates my carb bolus and correction boluses ( first you need to put in your rates and target bg). It has a insulin on board warning and some other useful features. I tried quite a few...

When is it time for insulin?

You can exercise intensively while low carbing but you must go through keto-adaptation period -switch the fuel from carbs to fat. It takes about two weeks of eating below 50 g of carbs (or even less). Once your body adapts to burning fat not glucose you have even more energy and much more...

    Problems to get test strips

In Poland I get a prescription for 200 strips a month as type 1. Type 2 gets 50 strips. I use more than 200 sometimes but apart from getting them from my family doctor I get a prescription when I see my diabetologist every few months so I'm ok for now. I haven't heard about the rules for testing...

    Milk?

You should really try it. I don't like coffee with cream either (much better with milk). Since I gave up milk I've been drinking my coffee with a tablespoon of butter and a teaspoon of coconut oil. It's delicious! You must blend it well first of course - it becomes creamy and doesn't taste oily...

    Insulin and work

Once the seal is broken it doesn't matter if you keep it in the fridge or not, unless of course you live in the very hot climate ;) . Only Levemir is good for 6 weeks once opened. For the rest is 28 days - I'm not sure about older insulins. On one occasion I kept my Lantus in the fridge while...

    Chocolate brownies

I make a chocolate brownie in a mug - my own recipe: 1 scoop (30g) of vanilla protein powder ( 4 g of carbs per 100g), 1 egg, 2 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder, 1 tbs cream cheese, 1/4 tsp baking powder, 1 tbs oil, 1 tbs water, sometimes I add extra sweetener. Mix everything in a mug put it in the...
